Yanks are the 5th Most Valuable Team in Sports

Forbes magazine (hat tip to Zell's Pinstripe Blog) just came out with their list of the ten most valuable sports teams in the world. Here are their top ten:

1) Manchester United - Value: $1.8 Billion

2) Dallas Cowboys - Value: $1.6 Billion

3) Washington Redskins - Value: $1.5 Billion

4) New England Patriots - Value: $1.32 Billion

5) New York Yankees - Value: $1.3 Billion

6) Real Madrid - Value: $1.29 Billion

7) Arsenal - Value: $1.2 Billion

8) New York Giants - Value: $1.18 Billion

9) New York Jets - Value: $1.17 Billion

10) Houston Texans - Value: $1.17 Billion

And here's what they had to say about the Yankees:
Baseball's only billion dollar club benefits from its own cable network, huge market and storied history. No wonder the Yankees have made the only real noise around the league this winter, throwing more than $400 million at three premium free agents. The tight economy may have the team scrambling to sell the last few luxury boxes at the new Yankee Stadium for 2009, but expect the place to be a revenue machine over the long haul.
Other than the Yankees, no baseball team has managed to crash the sports' billionaire club. The most valuable NBA franchise, the New York Knicks, checks in at $613 million. In the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs lead the valuation standings at just over $400 million. But while businesses of the NHL, NBA and MLB don't stack up to the NFL, the average team value has grown at a pace that doesn't figure to be sustained much longer.

wow.. how bout them... TEXANS!? They've been around for what 7 years? What a good move by the NFL to put a team back in Houston.

Not suprised by the list other than the Texans, and I didnt think the Jets were worth almost the same as the Giants.

I find it ridiculous that the Patriots are ahead of the Yankees.
Any explanation for why that is?
I know they have recently been a great franchise but overall they have been a terrible franchise. Before the 3 SB no one cared about them.
I know Gillette stadium helps their overall value but still based on their location too (Foxborough. They're not even in Boston) that should not over ride the overall value of a franchise.

The Redskins? Seriously! That's another head scratcher.

I can understand MU. Soccer is more popular gloabaly then baseball.
BUT it's very hard to believe 2 American football teams are ahead of the New York Yankees.
When you count baseball as being more world wide in popularity, Yankees having their own Tv nework, the interlocking NY being a very popular logo, new stadium, not having to share (unlike football Redskins Cowboys...) revenue ect.... consider all that how are the Yankees 5th?
I'm sorry but I feel in little insulted. lol

What's a surprising is the New York Giants and Jets being worth that much.
That's happens when you get a new stadium. Your franchise value sky rockets.
They and the Jets would be worth even more if that new Meadowlands stadium was being built in New York.

It's all about television contracts. That's where these football teams get their value. That's why there are six football teams in the top ten and only one baseball team.

The money that these teams get to air their games in insane.

I'm surprised that none of the rich Italian football clubs such as AC Milan, Inter and Juventus get into top ten.
