Yanks Back in Pursuit of Freddy Garcia?

Earlier in the month Ken Rosenthal reported that the Yanks were no longer interested in Garcia, apparently that's changed...

From Ken Rosenthal (hat tip to Zell's Pinstripe Blog):
The Mets and Yankees have emerged as the leading contenders for free-agent right-hander Freddy Garcia, according to a major-league source.

Garcia, 33, has "pretty much narrowed it down" to the New York teams, the source said, though two other clubs remain on the periphery. The White Sox also have had interest in Garcia, and the Rangers were in the early mix.

Garcia would prefer a major-league contract, which would guarantee him termination pay if he were released in March, but might need to accept a minor-league deal.

Neither the Mets nor the Yankees view Garcia as a certain addition to their rotation. Both teams continue to pursue other starters.

I wouldn't mind if they signed Garcia, he has the ability to be a very good back of the rotation guy, but I do think there are better options out there. He would probably rank as my fourth choice for the no. five spot in the rotation behind Andy Pettitte, Ben Sheets, and Phil Hughes.

It depends on his health because you could make a case that he would be more effective than Pettite if indeed healthy. If all would be healthy than Sheets, Garcia, Pettite, and Hughes would be my order.

I dunno, I don't trust Garcia that much. Add his health concerns and I don't think they should go after him.

Apparently there was a rumor on XM tonight that the Yanks had already made him an offer, but I don't know if that's true or not.

I wouldn't mind going after him at all. If healthy, I think he could be a very solid #5, and at least would give us a bit of rotation depth in the event of injury.

Garcia, Garland, Pettitte, Sheets would be my four main FA targets. I don't really think we're in desperate need of any of them, and we can probably do just as good with Aceves, Hughes, Kennedy, et al in the 5th slot. Nevertheless, you'd have a bit more wiggle room and depth with one of those four FAs if you signed one.

Freddy Garcia is worthless, why should we go out and get another injury prone pitcher for the 5 spot, just give andy his dam 16 mil, or go after sheets!

You guys don't want Garcia. If you do, nothing more than a minor league deal. I know you guys have tons of money but still...

how is Garcia's a concern all of the sudden? the guy has been a consisten 200 innings guy throughout his career! he just hit a snag. besides, every time he has pitched healthy (which is most of his career) he has a 1.2 WHIP. that's VERY good for a #4 starter in this rotation. The guy will perform as good or better than Pettite at a younger age when he gets back to health. but his health shouldn't be a concern at all.

Sign Garcia to a minor league deal and I can handle it. Anything else is ridiculous. We have Hughes to be the #5 and should be fine with that.
