To Summarize...

(AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)

- He got the drugs in the Dominican Republic with his cousin, after his cousin suggested that he used it.

- He injected the drug, and he said his cousin "would administer it to" him. And went on to say "neither of (them) knew what (they) were doing."

- He used the drug for an "energy boost."

- He doesn't know if it worked, but he admitted using it twice a month for three years.
"At the time, there were no regrets," Rodriguez said. "To what degree it helped, I'm not sure."
and it was kept a secret:
"We consulted no one," Rodriguez said. "It was evident we didn't know what we were doing.

"My cousin did not provide any other players. I stopped taking it and haven't taken it since."
- He was young, naive, and stupid.

- While he didn't know it was a steroid, he did know they weren't "tic-tacs."

- When he was on Seattle he used Ripped Fuel, which has since been banned from baseball and taken off the shelves at GNC.

- He said he never used HGH.

- He almost broke down while trying to thank his teammates for supporting him, pausing for about 40 seconds before he could continue.

Here's the wall of teammates who were
at the press conference to support him:

I love that last pic. Great support!

"To what degree it helped, I'm not sure."

let me help you complete this sentence ARod...

To what degree it helped, I'm not sure, but I would be happy to have the numbers I put up those years complete stripped from my life time statistics. You can judge me on the next 8 years, those in Texas should be thrown away.

Statisticians have determined that steroids maybe gave him two extra homeruns during that time. And he was going against many juiced pitchers. I don't have much patience for "damn the torpedoes" revisionist sentiments like that. The n umbers are waht they are. The context of every number every achieved in baseball already must be considered in any disucssions of relative significance and excellence; there is no reason that this period should be smudged from history by self-righteous windbags while greenie-infected, black-absented, and spit-drenched eras get a free pass. The gnostic longing for some enchanted purity in the sport is really nauseating.

just finished watching. this press conf was better than the Gammons interview, but i think we have further to go here.

also has it crossed anyone elses mind that this shitstorm just might provide some good cover for AJ CC and Tex? Media Lightning Rod could help the kids stay out of the glare when they have dips during the season.

Thats he's playing in for the Dominican Republic in the WBC,a way say thanks for the drugs.

Eric i get your point. But my impression is the vast majority of fans don't see it that way. I should have been clearer, but I'm speaking of the sort of place ARod needs to go to win back fans. Whether its fair or purist or windbaggery or whatever is immaterial to my point.

Giving in to the mob achieves nothing, except perhaps perpetuating an even worse injustice. It's like feeding wild animals: always a bad idea, and usually dangerous.

I agree very much with notion that this controversy takes pressure off the big FA signings. I'm looking forward to a great year.

Here is an idea....lets all stop talking about steroids since it has taken over just about every single sports site...and lets put this in the rear view mirror and move on to the upcoming season we as yankee fans have an awful lot to look foward to!!!!

To Anonymous and everyone else:

AMEN TO THAT!!!!!

Had he and the Yankees allowed follow up questions there would be a chance this would go away. But he only opened the door for more questions with some of what he said today. Then when those questions have been answered, Helena Roberts' book will be released and open a new can of worms.

Greg Cohen said...

Selena Roberts I mean.

The rule against follow-up questions seemed reasonable: a ton of reporters wanting to ask questions, and only so much time.

Name me one other player who has done all the above: 1) admitted and apologized for his steroid use; 2) named the drug, and even offered up another (Ripped Fuel during Seattle days) that has since been banned; 3) described how he got it and even admitted to being injected; 4) is already putting money where mouth is by funding anti-steroid education foundation?

Alex's day wasn't perfect, but come on! "Opened door to more questions"? Hardly. As long as more stuff doesn't surface contradicting his claims, I predict Alex has largely defused this controversy, to a degree no one would have dared hope at beginning of this story.

If not, he is in a world of hurt.

But assuming the best -- and I think with what Alex volunteered that is a safe assumption at this point -- the reasonable among us will be largely satisfied, and the zoo has been cancelled. Only the bloodlust of certain mob-types will remain unsatisfied, continuing to bear fangs and self-righteous ridicule in certain corners of the Internet.

GOD you people make me sick , you are the product of the media, you analyze every word like you are reporters. Of course he is leaving things out. Its none of your business who is cousin is. Do you blame him for protecting his family? Even thou he knows they will find his cousin anyway and torment him until he speaks. And Gary you are just as bad as the rest , yes you can give something a try and then continue to use it. Yes he is pretty dumb obviously he is a career athlete who didnt go to college. Obviously this is a guy who didnt grow up till recently. Dont forget he had no father growing up and then went streight to the bigs out of high school. You people need to get off your pedestals seriously. You all know that you would take the crap 2 if you thought you wouldnt get in trouble for it. Stop shitting on Arod when so many of you would do the same, and 103 others tested positive with him. AND FUCKING LISTEN TO WHAT THE MAN IS SAYING FOR CHRIST SAKE.
Gary : is he really blaming his cousin? ummm i believe he said it was all his fault multiple times. I believe he said that he asked is cousin to get it for him. You wanted to know where he got it and how he found out about it and he told you, now you blaming him for giving you the info and saying he is blaming others now.... PLEASE stop your idiocy ... you may be dumber than he is.
O and nobody should feel sorry for him? really ? when so many others are making millions by taking this crap and none of them are out there like him. All this crap his on his shoulders now because a confidential test was leaked illegally. While the others on that list sit on their asses and laugh all the way to the bank.
Should you feel bad for a multimillionaire? not for having money ... but you should feel bad for a man who has to take shit from people day after day without a moments peace. A man that is expected to hit his team all the way to a title. A man that just went through a divorce and has to hear about it every second of everyday. A man who's kid is very sick right now and yet noone gives a shit.
Is his life all peaches and creame? no get over it, he suffers just as much as anyone and in many cases worse.
I find myself in an odd place defending this guy but seriously, reading and hearing the shit that is said is fucking ridiculous. Stop pretending you know anything , and just realize that this steroid crap was everywhere and hopefully is getting better. The man has admitted it and said he was sorry, even while all of you continue to shit on him. This is more than anyone else has done. You all have this sense of betrayal and entitlement but none of you know what it is like to be him or be anyone of importance in a tough situation. All i can say is i hope you feel better about yourselves now that all this has happened and you can shit on some baseball player , if that makes you happy

Eric, us fans may be satisfied, but the media won't be. They will want know more about his cousin etc.

To be honest I'm sick of this stuff too, but that's not going to stop the media from covering it. It sells papers and creates controversy.

Also with the new book there will be new revelations about him.

Sadly this is far from over.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon,

Once again, who is Gary?

... And relax.

Anonymous said...

My prediction is that the media will be *largely* satisfied. Yes, the story won't ever go completely away, but, as I said, "the zoo has been cancelled".

Again, all contingent upon contradicting evidence not appearing.

My bet is that Alex diffused anything of substance that might come out in Selena's book. I'm sure there will be some sensationalism in there, but nothing truly new that matters. Of course, if Alex lied, I'll be proved wrong. But with what he has divulged, I am inclined to believe him at this point.

Anonymous said...

I'm getting tired of the f'in media. Why dont they concentrate on the other 103 cheaters and the others that have lied thru their teeth.

Greg Cohen said...

I'd love to know the other 103 names.

Anonymous said...

have they said if they are going to name them or not?

Greg Cohen said...

No they haven't. I doubt they'll releasing them.

Hey G man,

Any word on those keys to the new pad being given today? 2/17/09 baby, says so in the outfield!!!

I am sooo sick of this crap and just want to hear and read anything actually baseball related, enough about A-rod. I do not ever wish anything bad on anyone, and I understand the potential fallout for anyone involved, especially if it happens to be another prominent player, but in fairness to A-rod and also more importently the clean players of the time period, this "list" should be made public.

Anonymous said...

Somtimes I think that we should of let A-Rod go and traded for Miguel Cabrera.

I'm sick of all this crap, too. All I can say is let's go Yanks in 2009.

I'll be in the RF bleachers on Friday, April 17, so if any of you mugs will be at the game let me know.
