You had to know Carl Pavano was going to pitch well today, that's just how things have been working out for the Yankees lately. In six innings he allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out four. He threw 89 pitches, 54 for strikes. Pavano started the game by retiring the first ten batters he faced before Derek Jeter broke through with the Yankees first hit, a double to right field. Jeter would later score the Yankees first run on a two out, RBI single by Mark Teixeira. That would be the only run he'd allow on the day. He kept the Yankees off-balance all day and pitched better today than I can remember him ever pitching in his four years as a Yankee.
A.J. Burnett started for the Yankees and did not have his command today. In 6.1 innings he allowed three runs on just three hits, but walked seven and struck out just two. All the runs came via the home run; a solo homer off the bat of Shin-Soo Choo in the 3rd, and a two-run shot from Ryan Garko in the fourth. Burnett threw 111 pitches, only 60 for strikes. He left the game with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh.
Jonathan Albaladejo came on in relief of Burnett and pitched great. It was a make or break inning for the Yankees, one hit and the game is probably don't get a chance to come back and win this game. He firt got Mark DeRosa to hit a ground ball to Cody Ransom who was able to force the runner at home for the second out. He then retired Victor Martinez on a groudner to second to end the threat. He did throw a lot of a balls and twice was a pitch away from walking in a run, but still got the job done, which is all that matters.
Unlike Albaladejo and the rest of the Yankees pen, the Indians bullpen could not get the job done today. Rafael Perez came in to replace Pavano in the seventh and gave up a leadoff double to Robinson Cano, and then an RBI single to Hideki Matsui scoring Cano to cut the Indians lead to 3-2. That would be it for Perez. It was now Jenson Lewis' turn, and he didn't do much better. After recording the second out on a Ransom's failed sac bunt attempt, Jorge Posada came to the plate to pinch-hit and hit a two-run homer just over the wall in right to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead. It was a controversial homer because it looked like a fan may have interfered with it (pictured below), but the umpires looked at the replay and correctly called it a homer.
The Yankees added three more big insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th when with two out and the bases loaded, Ransom hit a high fly ball down the line in left that Shin-Soo Choo allowed to fall in when he lost the ball in the sun. All three runners scored and the Yanks had all the insurance they wouldn need.
Brian Bruney had pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 8th, another good outing for Bruney who really looks like he's becoming a solid setup man.
Even though it wasn't a save situation Mariano Rivera came in for the ninth and pitched another scoreless inning to put the game away.

The Yankees welcome back Jason Giambi tomorrow night as they open up a series with the Oakland A's. Andy Pettitte will start for the Yankees, with Dana Eveland getting the ball for the A's. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and the game will be on YES and WCBS 880. It supposed to rain all day and night tomorrow, so don't be surprised if they do not get the game in.

Pete Abraham is saying that it is a mistake and yankees have to correct that at there stadium with a rail so fans do not interfere.
That is a joke Abraham is a moron. I hope the yankees dont put a rail up. I like the fans are on top of the fielders. Didn't the same thing happen to Johnny Damon at Camden Yards. The Indians outfielders glove was in the stands its fair game to go after the ball. It was a homerun
And there is instant replay now so they would get corrected if a fan did a Jeffery Mayer. It was a homerun it was the correct call.
I don't think it's that big of a deal either. There are seats like this all over baseball. They may fix the "problem" in the offseason, but again, I don't think it's a big deal.
I'm gonig to the game tomorrow. I'll be in section 205 right above the Utz sign in rigth field.
I can't wait to see the Giambino back. I hope the fans give him a loud applause. He deserves it.
Yea I'm supposed to go, hopefully it doesn't rain.
He'll definitely get a nice ovation.
Yea I am also going down to the game tomorrow, but it's a 2hr+ trip for me, so I will be real upset if it gets canceled (which seems to be likely).
I know. But, when I went to the first game April 3rd, the forecast for the game was the same as it is for tomorrow with a 90% chance of rain. It rained a bit between innings but never actually poured hard enough for it to be postponed/delayed.
Not only is Bruney turning into a lights out set-up man but ithnk he will also be a dominated closer someday. I think that his motivation because i think he is a free agent this year so with a dominated year as a set-up man he can cash in at the end of the year and become someone elses closer.
Today's game seemed loud. A lot louder than the previous 3 games (when they were close).
I thought it would be an issue, but it seems like it won't be. Place was rockin' when Posada's HR call was reviewed and upheld.

I was at the game yesterday, the place is awesome!
I don't see those seats as a problem. There are seats just like that all around baseball; it's not just the Yankees.
As for the loudness of the stadium... I don't think that's an issue, either. My only concern is the lack of fans right around home in those expensive seats. But this will be fixed by next year, because prices will obviously drop.
its a beautiful stadium; we are very luck to have such a place for our team!
