5/4 Minor League Report

(AAA) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (20-4) beat Indianapolis 7-5: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yanks traveled to Indianapolis (Pirates) and logged a 7-5 win. The win makes SWB the first minor league team to reach 20 wins this seaons. They're record is 20-4.

PITCHING: George Kontos, called up from AA Trenton, made his AAA debut in place of Alfredo Aceves who was called up to NY. Kontos was 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA at AA Trenton. He led all Yankee minor leaguers in strikeouts in 2008.

Kontos threw a scoreless 1st inning after giving up a 2-out walk. Indy broke out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a single and double. Kontos picked up 2 K's in the inning. In the 3rd, he loaded the bases on 2 walks and an error by Eric Duncan, before giving up a 2-rbi single to give Indy a 3-0 lead. Kontos tossed a perfect 4th. With a 4-3 lead in the 5th, Kontos gave up the tying run on 3 singles before being relieved. He was charged with the go ahead run at 5-4.

Kontos' line: 4.1 IP, 5 runs, 3 earned runs, 6 hits, 4 K's--3 walks. 88 pitches -- 59 strikes, 5 groundouts - 4 flyouts.

BULLPEN: Zach Kroenke relieved Kontos in the 5th with 1 out and runners on 1st & 3rd. A double steal on a pickoff play scored the go ahead run to give Indy a 5-4 lead. Kroenke threw a scoreless 6th. Kroenke struck out the 1st batter of the 7th before being relieved.

Anthony Claggett came on 7th and proceeded to load the bases on a double, HBP, and walk. He got a big strikeout to get out of the jam.
Claggett threw a perfect 8th inning. He was credited with the win (3-0).

Brett Tomko tossed a perfect 9th inning with the help of a very nice running catch by Austin Jackson. Tomko picked up his 4th save.

OFFENSE: Down 3-0 in the 5th, SWB jumped on top 4-3. Singles by PJ Pilittere and Kevin Russo, and a 3-run homer by John Rodriguez (5). Shelley Duncan followed with a long solo homer. It was S. Duncan's league leading 10th homer, and league leading 29th RBI. In the 7th, Pilittere doubled, Russo had a bunt single, and Rodriguez's run scoring sac fly tied the game at 5. The Yanks took the lead in the 8th when they loaded the bases on singles by Juan Miranda, Doug Bernier, and a walk to Chris Stewart. Russo had the big hit, a 2-run single to give SWB a 7-5 lead. It was Russo's 4th single of the game in his first game back from the DL with a hamstring injury.

NOTES: Todd Linden extended his hit streak to 19 games. Alfredo Aceves promoted to NY. Anthony Claggett came back from NY. Kevin Russo is off the DL. Shelley Duncan was the IL Player of the Week. Indianapolis had 9 stolen bases in this game. Kei Igawa gets the start Tuesday.
