Cash: Wang will stay in the pen

According to ESPN radio's Andrew Marchand, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that Chien-Ming Wang will remain in the bullpen unless Joe Girardi decides that it's time for a change. Here's more from Marchand:
Cashman says that Wang shouldn't have a problem because "his contract says baseball player," not starter and he "is sporting a 20-something ERA," adding "We didn't put him in this situation."

Alan Chang, Wang's agent, told me, "[Wang's] not comfortable with it, but he's a team player."
I said last night that I felt Wang should remain in the bullpen at least until he can get his velocity back to where the Yankees want it to be, so I'm glad to hear this from Cashman. Although I'm kind of surprised with how blunt he was, but I guess he's as frustrated with Wang's performance so far this year as we are.

What will be very interesting is if the Yankees start to use Wang in high leverage situations instead of just mop up innings. If you ask me, I think they should.

sabathia, burnett, wang, hughes, pettite should be the starting rotation. maybe not in that order, but it's gotta be done. bruney and joba should set up for mo. this wang thing in the pen is not a good look. maybe last night, but not for long. he's gotta get back to the groove of being a starter. idk what the hell is wrong with cashman, and girardi, and most of the yankees organization. i was talkin' about this last night with my dude in brooklyn. if wang feels ready to be a starter, make him a starter. it's only right for him to get his confidence back in the rotation. joba and brian should set up for mo. because joba being a starter is not a good look. you all can see it when he pitches. it's like he's forcing himself to be a starting pitcher, when he looked more comfortable to be a bullpen set up guy. he was feared in the pen. now he's not. don't matter how many strikeouts he gets in a game, his stuff belongs in the pen. and wang belongs back in the rotation. think about it. you have your starter. then bruner or joba, or vice versa, then mo close out the game. done deal, lights out, game is over.

but hey, i'm just another true die hard yankee fan speaking his opinion

Wang hasn't shown anything to make anyone believe he can be a successful starter. His velocity is three MPH lower than the Yankees want it and his ERA is above 20. If he starts throwing 94-95 again then move him into the rotation, but for now I'd let him build arm strength out of the pen.

The issue is getting him in games, which is why I think Girardi should use him in higher leverage spots.

Regarding Joba, they're not going to move Joba to the pen, at least I highly doubt they will. They understand they have a future ace on their hands and that doesn't happen that often, so they're going to let him develop.

The Joba argument works both ways. You can have a dominant starter that gives you six or 7 innings of 3 runs or less and gives your offense less to worry about or you can hope you have a lot of leads throughout the year for someone to come in and dominate in late innings. I dont think Wang in the bullpen is good though considering he needs to build stamina to get back to being a starter. Maybe alternate with Hughes and get some side sessions in between until hes 100%

look at the mets situation this year...finally got great closers but have shitty starters

I'm tired of people saying Yankees are disrespecting Wang. Please Girardi named Wang the number 2 starter over Burnett this year that was a sign of respect for what Wang has done as a yankee.

You cant just throw Wang back in the rotation after what happened to him in the beginning of the season. Wang cost the team 3 games Girardi is going to get fired if he doesn't make the playoffs. I say use Wang in the bullpen until he is 100% shows that he is ready to be a starter.

Greg,

Wang is not going to build up arm strength and get where he should be coming out of the bullpen to throw 20 pitches every 4-6 nights. Cashman can say whatever he wants, but he screwed up when he recalled him in that panic move.

The thing about Wang is if the starter only goes 5 and the yanks are winning. You could then use Wang for 6,7 and 8 and then bring Mo in to close.

Which is why they have to use him in high leverage spots so that he can be used more often than just every 4-6 days. He's been a disaster as a starter this year, and he's shown nothing to show that he would do any better his next time out. He's still only throwing 90-92.

Four of Wang's last six starts before getting hurt last year were horrible, too. I'm afraid that there may have been a problem before he hurt his foot. I want to see more velocity and more appearances where he's not trash before we even think about putting him back in the rotation.

Could you please tell some of your friends to check out my blog? I haven't gotten any visitors except Greg and Liam, and I'm starting to consider cancelling it because right now it's a waste of my time.

Don't give up the blog YB, unless of course you hate doing it.

I'll tell people about it, hopefully the rest of the people here will do the same.

I defenitely don't hate doing it, and ya know what, that was a selfish comment I just made. I love doing it and I won't cancel it. I'm really proud of the blog. And I'll get some visitors, I just need to advertise. That's the big picture!

YB,

I'll give it a look, what is the URL?

Why is Jose Veras still on this team?

He cant pitch an inning in a 8-0 game. It is embarrasing that Robertson had to come in the 7th and get the final two outs.

Get this bum Veras off the team!!!!!!

Thanx.

I think Veras has worn out his welcome too. Joba looks like he's forcing it because he's struggling to throw strikes consistently. Everybody looks uncomfortable when you're throwing 25-30 pitches an inning. I am frustrated at how much the velocity does come down though. He should be sitting 94-95 on the fastball from the first pitch so that slider puts them away.

When Wang shows he's earned Girardi's trust to start the game, he'll play. It's not like the Yanks have gone in the tank since Wang was demoted.

Wang doesn't belong in the pen! He should be in AAA until they are ready to put him back in the rotation. Or just give him 1 game and let him sink or swim.

Actually, what the cashman said is make me sick, I think he should look back to 2006 and 2007 those two year who has carried yankee to postseason? maybe Wang is not pitch well during the postseason 06 and 07, but the Twin-19 GAME Winner was the truth and cannot be erase in history... We know Wang's performance was really terrfic in season start, but now he has improved his mechanics and hip problem, now he is coming back to ball park, he needs to ptich to re-familiar with the mound, why don't give him a chance to try? now is late-may, season still long, I don't believe there is no stage to provide for Wang to come back, I really hope if Cashman doesn't like Wang, please trade him to BOS or TOR, I would like to see Wang knock Yankees down, and I believe he will be more stronger than before..I'm now starting miss Joe Torre's Generation...>"<
