Fangraphs Reviews The Last Three Yankees Drafts

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up about this. Over on Fangraphs they reviewed the Yankees drafts from 2006-2008. And here's their preview for the '09 draft:
2009 Draft Slot: 29th overall
Draft Preference (2006-08): Best available talent
MLB Club Need: Relievers, Outfielder, Catcher
Organizational Need: Infielders, Outfielders, Left-handed pitchers
Organizational Strength: Right-handed pitchers, catchers
Notes: The organization will no doubt play its cards close to the chest with the rival Boston Red Sox picking at No. 28. Money should again be no object, and the organization might want to make up for a poor 2008 draft.

Ahh the elusive pitcher that throws with their left-arm.

They'll probably still go best available on the board, it's honestly the best thing to do in baseball. There are a few infielders with promise in the system, but the big names like Angelini haven't worked out so far.

I know it's been an extremely small sample size, but I'm interested to see how people feel about Ramiro Pena as a legit potential replacement for Jeter. I love his glove at third, I know he plays short in the minors. With more playing time he's been hitting alright, and he's still just a baby. I know the most important factor is going to be defensive range at short, in addition to at least being a .250 major league hitter. I thought I'd bring this up because I have felt for a while that the Yankees should make it a priority to draft a shortstop (we're loaded on 2B and Cano's not going anywhere anyway). Thoughts on Pena?

Leonora,

I agree, they should definitely take the best player available, especially if he's a middle infielder.

Jmas,

I like Pena, he's great with his glove and he's showing that he might be a decent hitter. Can he take over for Jeter down the road? Not sure. Defensively he's a huge upgrade, but we still need to see if he can hit consistently. Like you said it's a small sample size. Either way, I would definitely be drafting middle infielders in I were the Yankees.
