Here's some of what Appel had to say about the book:
"It's really the first history of the Continental League - the Branch Rickey brainchild that led not to a third major league (as he hoped), but to expansion in 1961 and beyond (as his investors, like Bill Shea hoped).
"There is a lot of Yankee stuff in this story, because Dan Topping (besides O'Malley) was the games most powerful owner, Stengel, getting fired after the 1960 World Series was a key spark in getting the Mets going, and Yankee dominance was considered such a problem for the other teams."
Definitely sounds like an interesting read for not only Yankees fans, but baseball fans in general.
- Andy Pettitte has had a lot of success against the Rays in his career, going 15-4, with a 3.63 ERA in 26 games (25 starts). He's made one start against them this year, and in 7.1 IP he allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out four.
- Jeff Niemann has never made a start against the Yankees, and as we know that's usually not a good sign for the Yanks.
- Robinson Cano is 1 for his last 16, and has seen his batting average drop from .378 t0 .333.
- At this point last season the Yankees were 14-13 and just 2.5 games out of first place. Today they find themselves at 13-14 and 5.5 games out of first.
- I posted this below in its own post, but in case you missed it here it is again. It's an up on Alex Rodriguez and Chien-Ming Wang from the AP via ESPN:
- Speaking of injured Yankees, Tyler Kepner has a few quotes from Brian Bruney about his injured shoulder:Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez played what could be his final rehab game Thursday, going 0-for-2 with two walks and putting in three innings of defense.
Coming back from March 9 surgery on his right hip, Rodriguez said “not yet” when asked if a decision had been made about rejoining the Yankees for Friday night’s game at Baltimore. He said he would be involved in a conference call with team officials about his status later Thursday.
The three-time AL MVP did shake hands and thank support staff at the Yankees’ minor league complex for their work after taking extra grounders and batting practice following the intrasquad game.
...
Also, Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, on the disabled list due to weakness of the abductor muscles in his hips, allowed three hits over five scoreless innings in the extended spring training game. He struck out seven during a 72-pitch outing.
“He was fine,” Yankees vice president Billy Connors said. “Good sinker. He’s feeling good, too. He’s healthy. That’s the most important thing.”
Wang, who missed the final 3 1/2 months last season with a right foot injury, said he felt better and hopes to return to the Yankees after one or two more minor league outings.
“They finally sat me down and told me I can’t be John Wayne and I can’t try to tough it out,” Bruney said. “It’s a good thing we had that talk, because I don’t think I would have been completely honest. I want to get back and help the team, but I’m no good if I’m not healthy.”
“I know everybody has watched the same baseball I have, and nobody’s done the job that they want to do,” Bruney said. “It’s easy to put pressure on yourself to come back, but it’s just not smart.”
Bruney, who plans to play catch again on today, also told Kepner that the elbow bothered him in spring training, but he didn't say anything.
“I was rolling the dice doing it,” Bruney said. “The doctor said I could have blown my arm.”
- UPDATE 9:33 p.m.: Jose Molina left tonight's game with a strained left quad. He will have an MRI later tonight. If you ask me, he's headed to the DL.
Stick around and discuss the game

Isn't Matsui DH? The same problem was on the LoHud Yankees Blog.
Yea I copied it from there, just fixed it.
I was talking to my friends today (they're all Yankee fans) at lunch and they were all saying there is no chance the Yankees can win the World Series. I of course disagreed with them and they looked at me like I was from another planet. What do you think?
New friends.
If the team today is the one playing in October, than no, they can't win a world series without Posada, A-Rod, Nady, Wang and Brueny. But if they can get themselves healthy there is no reason why this team shouldn't be able to compete.
I know! That's exactly what I said. You can judge the Yankees yet because they don't have their full team everyday lnieup out there.
Going to NYC tonight to see The Lion King. I saw it before, but my younger brothers wanted to see it. It's an 8:00 show so I think I'm going now. See ya.
Later YB, enjoy the show.
100 wins, here we come!
Yankees can talk all they want about Chien-Ming and he can throw at little leaguers for a month if he likes, but what counts are the mechanics. If the Yankees want to provide something meaningful release some video tape so we can compare it to video of Wang when he was healthy. Im rooting for the guy, I just hate this PR crap from the Yankees. "Best sinker I've ever seen him throw." Yeah, I bet.
Wow - i hope they are not rushing A-Rod. These athletes are damn amazing if they can recover that fast.
Wang's as great as those bullpen sessions in between his hurrendous starts.
A-Rod back for tomorrow's game which I'll be going to. Let's get a win tonight and get this team back on track!
Where does it say 'best sinker I've ever seen him throw.'
Yes, the game starts sooooo well again!
I apologize for any cuss words...
What the hell Pettitte really...REALLY 2 homers?!!11?! This team needs to stop the whole fuckin getting behind thing. We get behind, we lose, that simple. Pettitte go fuck a goat.
Jeter hasnt done shit in months, Finally gets a fuggin hit
Wow the yankees are allergic to home plate
Wow. That's all I can say. This team is very flat. We have nothing working for us. I'd like to think that Arod being back tomorrow will be a huge lift but I am seriously doubting if he can carry this team. I'm not a Met fan but I am starting to find them more fun to watch, at least THEY know how to play.
-Cartman
GAME
How bad is this team that Cashman built? What a terrible GM!
done with this team, go METS! fuck this team, seriously, FUCK THEM. if i was getting payed their rediuclous salaries, Id be at the ball park yesterday working to help this team. team is too happy with their inflated salaries and big cars. FUCK THEM, FUCK CASHMAN, GOOD BYE, GO METS!
-Cartman
Bud Selig should seriously look into doing testing with Yankee Stadium and putting balls in a humidifier because jesus fucking christ home runs are flying out of there at an exponential rate. By the end of the season I wouldn't be suprised if there is over 500 HR's hit at Yankee Stadium.
Emmanuel,
Why havnt we hit any homers? its not the stadium, its our team, they suck.
I want Giambi!!
Just got home from the batting cages in my area. Geeez this team looks dead.
I HATE THIS FUCKING TEAM... THEY SUCK1!!!
Yet another no name/minor league pitcher being made into a superstar. Uninspiring would be a good word to describe this.
What are the odds Molina hits into another inning ending DP?
Yay Damon!
Well at least this guy was a top 10 pick...
About time this team grows some balls and fights back.
Geeeez... and Andy gives the lead right back.
:'(
Nobody on this team can pitch. It's really amazing.
It's certainly sad how this staff was thought to be the best in years and no one's yet lived up to their full potential. The offense is really flat, a few big innings but no consistency. I hope Arod can shake things up with the offense.
wat happened to molina?
Not sure, I left the room for ten min and get back and he's gone.
I think we are witnessing the decline of Derek Jeter..he seems to be god awful this year.
Johnny Damon has been the only guy hitting on this team, its a shame Tex is not getting the job done with the bat, a lot of missed rbi chances.
Strained left quad for Molina, that probably means he's headed to the DL. MRI later tonight.
This team can't catch a break. Everything is going against them. Everything.
Is Kevin Cash healthy?
I HOPE JOSE VERAS DIES!!!
Yes, Cash just came off the DL.
Well thats great Kevin Cash is a better catcher than Molina and Cervilli.
Ever since that Zobrist homer it looks like the offense is doing its best to get home before 11:00.
Team needs to make a trade for a Catcher, its a big role, we dont have anyone ready for full time duties.
nah nah nah nah hey hey good bye
offical theme song of the new york yankees.
Hardy har har
can this team get a call...
Cervelli smacked the crap outta that right into cf'ers glove
Another leg injury?! Seriously? WTF?!
Did anyone notice the two douche bags sitting next to the dugout in the second row? It looked like the were both texting people. PAY ATTENTION TO THE GAME!
JOHNNYYYY DAMON!
DAMON!
AGAIN!
Yay Damon!
(listening to the radio broadcast)
Remember when the Yankees fired the strength and conditioning coach a few years back...yeah needs to happen again.
He better bring in Mo.
By the graces of god Girardi made a correct move.
hahahaha, knowing our luck they'll probably.... ahh nevermind. I don't even want to say it.
Girardi is a great manager who course he would bring in Mariano just like yesterday.
Yanks need this win being 14-14 with Arod back is a potential new lease on the season.
Of course.
Are you kidding Mo?
I advocated the signing of Krod no one listened.
Like Mark Teixeira said yesterday, this team finds a new way to lose every nigth.
Mariano, you really need to correct yourself.
some team cashman built, fuckin losers
Back-to-back homers against Mo, unbelievable.
nah nah nah hey hey good bye season.
If 2001 was the last night of the Yankee dynasty. These last 24 hours have been the last day of the Yankees' remaining glimmers of manhood. This is sad to watch.
mo got an out!!
And Mo gets booed.
It is not unbelievable. Have you been this junk closer since 2001? Its ridiculous. Anytime you need Mo to do anything fugggaboutit. He's a joke. Abraham makes fun of fans for saying get rid of everyone but Mo and Jeter. No, Abraham you moron those are the first two you get rid of. Same old garbage since 2001. Mo, Posada, Jeter....All old has-beens. Like I have said a millions GTFO!!!!!!!!!!
I've been saying, Joba is Mo's replacement, if Wang is healthy and good to go, and Hughes can do something, groom Joba now,le him set up, he showed he was lights out in the late innings role.
This is painful. The managers are making the players stink. Theres something majorly wrong here.
Mo deserves to get booed. He should booed loud and hard everytime he steps to the mound. He is personally responsible for starting this garbage 3 weeks ago vs the Red Sox. Its been downhill ever since. This organization is ripe with losers from management to the GM to the idiot coach who sticks up for these losers. Sign more old people you idiot Cashman.
Joba should be the closer and Mariano should be the set-up man.
Also enough of Molina and Cervalli I'm tired of them.
LET THE KEVIN CASH ERA BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!
2 HRs the ghosts never made it across the street
Why is it that every time they lose they make it as painful as possible?
I guess the ghost never made it to Fenway either. Rivera is the reason we are in the losing slump. He shut the door against Bay we would of been in 1st.
Johnny Damon is the only guy doing his job, everyone else has failed.
I actually don't disagree with that, Anon. If Mo saves that game the Yankees are a lot better off right now.
I don't know wtf Girardi keeps going to Veras for.
Here comes the loser hitters who swing at anything. Professional hitters WAIT for their pitch. This team? Losers that swing at everything.
If I had a blog it would be for the sole purpose of banning dumb folk.
You're right Greg, they give you hope and then crush your spirits.
I guarantee Swisher homers here just to make it interesting.
i dont know what to say, this team is just... garbage. i see what people mean about jeter, i see his range is gone, i see him not doing shit at the plate, yanks need to make some trades, get a catcher, shop for relievers, get their head out of their asses and play
I don't know how to ban people.
dont think u can with blogger
Watch A-Rod put the team on his back and finally get some love.
hope he can dane, hope he can
yikes 6 games out? thats a little scary
The only possible reason I can see for bringing in Veras so damn much is because Cash told Girardi to try and make him get better to get SOME trade value... otherwise I have no idea.
michael kay "join us tomorrow"
i think i'll pass.
Michael Kay sounds like he's about to cry.
wow. are we going to win another game this season? this is getting a little ridiculous. 13-15 for 209 million dollars. i'm slowly starting to dislike this ball club and organization more and more each and every day.
John Sterling sounded the same way Greg.
anyone think even with all the injuries girardis days are numbered, maybe in the single digits?
i give it 8 more games.
8 ?ucking homeruns, are you freaking kidding me, pitchers stink, & the new catherdral is a joke, nothing special about it, no distinguishing characteristic, parks are too small, pitching is deluded, & players are all on PED's & other drugs.... i'm losing hope & my love of baseball...
Sweep of the Orioles is coming.
All the people that are crying remind of Farrell/Lester from earlier today.
Theyve found yet another way to lose. Painful. We're in a lot of trouble this year
If Dave Eiland is still around by the end of this week, then this organization is on autopilot.
Something needs to be done and done soon.
This team is pathetic in the clutch. Actually not. They get the game tied and then blow it every time. It has been painful to watch.
WTF is wrong with Mo?
Girardi game count falls to 18. I was just kidding when I suggested a ten game losing steak could know him out in two weeks but a ten game losing streak is starting to look possible. The pitching is horrible, just unbelievable. No one of the starters seems capable of pitching more than 5 innigs and the bullpen can't get an out befoe giving up a home run. Every game seems more embarrasing than the last. Something is waaaay wrong. The bullpen has issues but not a single person seems capable of pitching well. Firing girardi is unlikely to solve the pitching issues but the hitting is so lackluster too. A shake up is inevitable if just to litterall shake things up. Cashman is going to have rethink jobas roll cause the pen needs at least one guy they go to if this team wants to finish ahead of Baltimore. If they don't do something about the pitching this team could lose 90 games this year. They'll be lucky to place third at this rate -what will toronto having gone berserk
I believe the Yankees will still find its way back to the top like other great franchises in the sport.
I believe the Yankees will still find its way back to the top like other great franchises in the sport.
In maybe three years
Man, I'm tired to hear "the next season" I don't want the Yanks to be the 21st century Cubs. I really had my hope in Girardi, maybe Mattingly was a better choice.
I hope so Johanne. CC needs to step up tomorrow and pitch a big game. A complete game shutout would do wonders for this team's morale.
>> I don't know wtf Girardi keeps going to Veras for. <<
Sometimes you guys freakin' kill me. Who the hell do you want him to go to? The whole fuckin' pen sucks. EVERYONE in their has been terrible. He needs to go to someone...and they all suck.
Hey, how about we bitch about Girardi going to Mariano, too. Ya know, 'cus that's his fault, too.
Come on, people. Don't be so damn ignorant.
Fuck I'd settle for cc getting through the 7th inning. The starters have suuuuuucked.
One think about girardi and the pen is that it seems he hasn't divided in him mind which players r more reliable than others - even if were talking who will give up less runs vs more runs. I don't get the sense that some pitchers are being chosen for the close games and others will be sacraficed for 3-5 innings in games when starter totally collapses. He needs to get the better pitchers some rest IMHO. Jobs moving toy the pen would aid that cause too
Sry blogging on iPod touch n this kyboard sucks
