News & Notes

- Today would've been Bobby Murcer's 63rd birthday. Happy Birthday Bobby.

- The Yankees have won nine of their last eleven and seven in a row.

- Phil Hughes has struggled against Baltimore, going 1-2, with a 8.66 ERA in four starts against them. This season he's made one start against the O's and got pounded for eigth runs on eight hits and two walks in just 1.2 innings pitched. That adds up to a 43.20 ERA. With Wang headed back soon this becomes a pretty important start for the young right-hander.

- Jeremy Guthrie has pitched in nine games (eight starts) against the Yankees in his career, and he's 3-3, with a 4.41 ERA. At Yankee Stadium he was 1-0, with a 4.85 ERA in three starts. He's already made two starts against the Yanks this year, and he's 1-1, with a 4.50 ERA.

- The Yankees held Kangaroo Court today in the clubhouse. No word on any fines, but Joe Girardi hinted during the pregame that two left-handed throwers received the most fines, and said that Mariano Rivera was the judge. According to Bryan Hoch, it was the first Kagaroo Court held in the Yankees clubhouse since 1995.

- Alex Rodriguez has homered in four straight games. He's hit five homers this year, but has just seven hits overall.

- It was announced today that A-Rod ranked second behind only Albert Pujols on the Sporting News top 100 baseball players list. Derek Jeter was 8th, Mariano Rivera was 9th, Mark Teixeira was 17th, Yankees 1B and CC Sabathia ranked 29th.

- During the Yankees seven-game winning streak Mark Teixeira is hitting .444/.500/1.000 with 4 HR, and 13 RBI. Since A-Rod has been back he's hitting .341/.417/.854, with 6 HR, and 15 RBI.

- In ten games this year Francisco Cervelli is hitting .370/.393/.370, with 3 RBI, and the Yankees are 7-1 in his starts.

- After a very solid April, Nick Swisher is hitting .102/.262/.184, with a homer and 3 RBI during the month of May. He's struck out 21 times in those 16 games, and seen his batting average drop from .312 to .230.

- Derek Jeter is hitting .321/.424/.464 with a homer and 4 RBI during the Yankees current winning streak. Speaking of Jeter, he, along with his "Turn 2" foundation just opened the 24 Hour Fitness-Derek Jeter Gym in Midtown. You can read more about it in this article from the NY Post.

"One reason why I decided to do this is because helping the kids is something that means a lot to me, and I want to share that with everybody," Jeter said. "You don't have to be a professional athlete to keep yourself in great shape."

"Our foundation throughout the years has preached prevention of drugs and alcohol to promote a healthy lifestyle," said Jeter. "This is a part of it --staying in shape, working out and exercising helps your health and makes you feel good about yourself. It is one of the main reasons I wanted kids to get an opportunity to do that today."

This is where Girardi sometimes baffles me.

Why start Cash? Cervelli is hitting almost .400 and has been a rock behind the plate.

Let the kid play!! He's playing really well!

Maybe Hughes is more confident with Cash behind the plate or maybe Girardi feels he needs a veteran catching the young Hughes.

Its not really that big of deal Cervelli is still doing the majority of catching.

I think he's starting Cash because Hughes threw better to Cash than he did to Cevelli in Baltimore.

This would be a great game to go to. The weather is awesome. The Os suck so lower interest. Can prolly get some tkcts at a descent price. Wish I could go. Has anyone come up with some reasoning why stubhub stops selling ticket an hour ago - this is lunacy. Also does anyone know if you can buy tckts from stubhub at the stadium? Sucks not being able to buy ticket an hour or 30min before a game.

Hughes=garbage
joba=future.

Give Hughes a chance... He is just 22.

Anonymous said...

no chance, i give him as good as a chance at being a starter as good as a chance the wwe has out of knocking the nuggets out of the pepsi center--zilch.

bottom line, the hughes we saw in texas, the one that got hurt wont be back, since that day, hes never been the same.

Nice. Back-to-back jacks, by Swisher and Cano.

And Anon, you need to be patient with young pitchers. There's no guarantee of anything, but you can't give up on a 22-23 year old with his stuff.

Greg Cohen said...

I'm sorry, back-to-back-to-back.

Joba is the only one I trust out of the trio that included Hughes and Kennedy. As far as I am concerned the latter 2 should have been shipped to Minnesota for Johan Santana.

I just dont trust Hughes. Every big pitching prospect over the last decade that we had has flopped. How many were dealt then never heard of again? That what I see happening with IPK and Hughes.

Anonymous said...

or rather, thats what should have happened with IPK and Hughes.

Greg Cohen said...

I agree with you regarding Kennedy, but I think Hughes can end up becoming a solid pitcher.

not a bad night for hughes, 9k's

Hughes is nice, son. Only reason that Adam Jones HR happened is because the damn ump missed 2 strike.... garbage calls. -Gameday

Greg Cohen said...

Yep, two mistakes, besides that he's been good. Hopefully he can put another zero on the board in the sixth.

Well, no one's giving up on Hughes because he is so young, but, right now, the only thing Hughes is good at is giving up alot of runs. He gets spotted 4 runs and does nothing with it. This is not acceptable.

Anonymous said...

Wow, a whole 5 IP with 3 ER. That's not very good...

daneptizl said...

You're unacceptable.

Why did they take Hughes out...

Greg Cohen said...

I dunno, he only threw 89 pitches. Maybe Girardi just wanted to get Hughes a win.

Anonymous said...

he probably wanted hughes to feel confident before being sent down. Like Aceves a lot though, think he can help the pen a bunch.

nice throw by damon and tag by robbie =)

O_o

Greg Cohen said...

I can't disagree about 5 IP and 3 ER not being good, because it isn't. But Hughes' stuff was sharp and he really only made two mistakes. It's definitely a lot better than his last outing against the O's.

Hughes has a lot of talent but he still needs work. I would send him back to Scranton. He does have a bright future.

Joba has potential to be future ace and Hughes has potential to be a number 2 type pitcher. Yankee fans need to be patient with both of them not often you get two young homegrown arms like them.

Hughes still has a lot of talent and needs to harness it. He's still young. I still think he can be very good. Kennedy always seemed like trade bait to me and but he was never traded.

Pettitte isn't getting any younger and may be gone next year. Maybe Hughes can get it together and become the 5th starter if Andy leaves or isn't kept.
