During games, the Yankees bullpen remains a lively place. The relievers still swap stories, they still chatter, they still joke. And those who grow tired of the obstructed view from their seats don't hesitate to improvise, standing on benches they've moved against the fence so they can get a better view. But lately, in light of their struggles, there has been a difference in the mood.
"Even though it's loose, you can see it in people's eyes," lefty Phil Coke said. "As soon as that phone rings, it goes dead silent."
...
"We're getting used in such a different fashion every time we step on the field," said Coke, who admits that in several instances this season, he and his colleagues may have been caught mentally unprepared. "We've got to be ready to go from the first inning."
Coke said he tries not to get too caught up in which role he is used. There were also quotes from David Robertson and Jonathan Abaladejo on the subject.
"I feel my role is in the seventh inning, and I've got to come in in the second because we have no one else, then I've done nothing for my team except hurt my team right out of the chute because of my mental preparation," Coke said. "As a bullpen guy, you've got to be willing to do what you've got to do."
"It's always nice to know when you'll have an opportunity to come in," said David Robertson, who while in Triple-A, took comfort in knowing that late in close games, he was likely to appear. "But still, you're out there for nine innings and you'll never know when your time will come."
Right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo said he believes that roles will eventually shake out, and he would like to be able to get a stronger sense of when he would enter games. There comes a time when a relief pitcher has to earn their role and/or define it themselves. Take Jose Veras for example. After struggling to start the year he had two good outings in a row to move back up Joe Girardi's pecking order. Next thing you know he gives up five runs on five hits and walked five in his next 2.2 innings pitched.
"Right now, I think nobody's got a role in the bullpen and you've got to be prepared for whatever situation comes up, be ready every day," Albaladejo said. "I think it will change the more we play."
From April 17 through April 24th Jonathan Albaladejo pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out two and walking none. Moves up pecking order. Then he gives up seven earned runs in one inning over his next two outings.
I'm not going to sit here and pretend I know what it takes for a major league relief pitcher to prepare himself mentally to go pitch. But sometimes you just have to go out there and get the job done.
I think Mo said it best, "We have to do our thing," said Rivera... "We can't go about business the same way we've been doing it, don't give too much credit to the hitters and just go at it."

It's a chicken and the egg debate. Are the relievers ineffective because there are no defined roles or are there no defined roles because the relievers have been ineffective regardless of the role (and because of injury to Brian Bruney)?
There were defined roles Bruney and Marte were suppose to setup for Mo. Veras was suppose to be the 7th inning guy. But both Bruney and Marte are on the DL. And Jose Veras sucks.
Coke might be the new setup man until Bruney gets back. Because he has been the only one really throwing the ball well.
Coke last 8 apperances 6 ip, 1hit, 1bb, 3SO, 0ER
They all need to shut it. Maybe if they all didn't suck ass, they'd get their roles. Instead, they keep sucking, which means Girardi needs to switch up the roles to find what works.
JC is right.
The roles are right there for any of them to step up & take. If just one of those pitchers could somehow manage to string together 4-5 good performances in a row it would help clarify the relief staff's roles.
So far, Coke has been the best in a bad group. They should shut up and let their pitching speak for them. Right now I don't want to hear 'boo' from any of hem. They are hurting the team.
Close games
6th if necessary - Albaladejo
7th - Robertson
8th - Coke
9th - Rivera
Mop ups
Ramirez, Veras, Claggett, Albaladejo.
Any Questions?
Veteran Brett Tomko should be up
Does anyone think the game will be cancelled tonight? There are tickets for $20 on StubHub and I'm wondering if I should take a chance and buy tickets in hope the game will be rescheduled for another day.
Anon, the weather looks pretty damn awful. If I had to guess, I'd say they weren't going to get the game in tonight. But you could still pick up tickets cheap and go on the makeup day.
yeah thats what I was hoping to do..I think I'm going to take the gamble
I have to agree with JC on this one. I was there on Friday night and although the Yanks righted the ship in time and saved the game in the ninth, the bullpen basically nearly gave the game away. My girlfriend summed it up best: “No matter what your role is, if you can’t even throw strikes when you are on the bump, when needed… Forget it.” To be making some random, asinine statements about your disastrous performance is adding insult to injury.
They should all look in the mirror, shut up, man up, and then step up. Period. Until they do that, the starting pitchers virtually have no chance of winning games unless they go the full nine.
As of now, I strongly think this squad isn’t going to see the playoffs. They look as exactly as they play. Nothing more than a team playing .500 ball. Not weak enough to finish last, but not strong enough to finish first. Yes, I know it’s early, but I’m not convinced. I invite anyone to debate me on this, or try to convince me otherwise…
its very very early. A-rod, nady, wang need to return and we will see them take off before the 2nd half if they return healthy and productive. plus ya never know if a trade or 2 will be made to make a difference. they just gotta stay close to boston or toronto whoever is ahead of them and they've done so despite playing some ugly baseball.
I think it's more of a confidence issue right now than talent. Bruney will be back and I think he is a dominant pitcher and showed us that early in the season. If some of these other guys move to a primarily 7th inning role I think they will fit in fine and will become a solid unit. Keep in mind last year they werent off to as bad of a start in the bullpen but it was shaky and they ended up being one of the best units in baseball. So the talent is there and there is still a good chance with the return of Bruney or someone else stepping up big, this bullpen will be dominant in closing out games for the starters.
The issue is that Girardi misuses the pen. Outside of using Mariano in the 9th and Bruney for the 8th, he does not know what he's doing. He continuelly trusts guys like Veras and Ramirez who have shown they cant be effective. Its not all on Girardi, its on the guys too, if you cant throw a strike, how do you expect to be used?
I'd like to see the younger guys get regular work too. Joe talks about how the younger guys need regular work to get better, well give it to them! Dont give the regular work to Veras and Edwar, give it to Melancon and Robertson. Instead of Marte, whos be god awful against leftys, use Coke. I notice that when Edwar and Jose are in jams he leaves them out there to get pounded, or as Joe would say in the post-game, "they need the work." But the moment Robertson, Coke or Melancon get themselve in a bad situation, he's immediatly removing them.
The best things to be done would to be to recall Tomko and Fossum, who to send down? I am not sure, maybe Claggett and Edwar. Tomko is a vet, who could contribute, and I'll trust Fossum more then Marte.
Also, Turnbow and Macdougal were released why didnt they at least inquire about these guys.
-Cartman
Cartman,
Turnbow and Macdougal are worst than our current options. Relievers are notoriously volatile month to month--the Red Sox pen will be a 'weakness' for a period of time this season, and the Yankees pen will be a 'strength' at some point, just because they each put together the requisite good/bad month.
A bullpen comprised of Mo, Bruney, Coke, Robertson, Melancon, Edwar and Veras is actually quite strong. That's 6 strikeout pitchers. Marte, when he's right, is a great pitcher as well, though it remains to be seen if we ever get that guy on the mound.
Back away from the edge of the bridge.

I agree with Cartman. Girardi has his favorites out of the pen and will only trust them. Its frustrating to watch. It reminds me too much of Torre, only trusting 2 or 3 guys and not letting the kids work it out. I think fossum and tomko would be great to get up here. Both have experience and can help the kids out. As much potential as Veras has I think it showed that hes hit or miss and we cant have this on that team.
can we please either use or trade igawa - he's driving me nuts....and i think we should also have shelley duncan try out pitching
These guys are professionals and should be ready when called upon. That's what their paid to do
