Winning pitcher - A.J. Burnett (3-2)
Losing pitcher - Derek Holland (1-2)

With one on and one out in the top of the first Mark Teixeira destroyed a Derek Holland fastball, sending it deep into the seats in left for a two-run home run. It was Teixeira's team leading 15th home run of the year, and his 12th this month. The Yankees cruised from there.

A.J. Burnett had his best start in a month and a half going six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, walked four, and struck out seven. He had great stuff, but his command was off at times as you can see by the high number of walks. He threw 118 pitches, and 70 of them were strikes. Even with the walks, A.J. was dominating. His fastball had good velocity sitting at 93-94 mph all night, and his breaking ball had great movement. Good to see him pick up a win.

Kudos to Kevin Cash for his walk to the mound in the fifth. Not because it helped anything, although it might have, but because it was funny. Burnett was in a little bit of trouble and had lost the plate, so Cash comes out to the mound. Instead of talking to Burnett he just walked over, picked up the rosin bag, threw it back down, and walked away. Burnett looked at him like he was crazy, looked into the dugout as if to say, "what the ****?" and then settled down and got out of the inning.

Derek Jeter had a big game offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two walks, and a run scored. The double came in the second and gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead.

After picking up a big double last night, Hideki Matsui followed up that performance with a two home run night. He led off the sixth with a solo shot. The Yankees would add two more runs that inning on a Kevin Cash two-run single. Matsui's second homer came in the top half of the seventh, a two-run blast that gave the Yankees an 8-0 lead. Robinson Cano added a solo shot in the ninth for the Yankees ninth run.

After taking out Burnett, Girardi decided to give Jose Veras another chance. He was rewarded for his deicision with two runs on two hits - including a homer - and a walk in just 0ne-third of an inning. Veras threw 23 pitches, 14 0f them were strikes. Girardi then went with David Robertson and the results were much better. He retired the only two batters he faced, and threw six of his eight pitches for strikes.

Chien-Ming Wang came on for the eighth and ninth and was very impressive despite not having the best velocity. He was only throwing 90-92 mph, but the sinker was moving better than it has all year and his breaking stuff looked good too. He retired the all six batters he faced, two on the ground, two in the air, and two via the strike out, and of his 26 pitches, 18 of them were strikes. I don't think it's time for him to return to the rotation, but he's certainly showing signs of improvement. For now I think the Yankees should continue to use him out of the pen, and even in some high leverage situations until he can build up some arm strength and build up some much needed confidence.

The Yankees once again did not commit an error in the field, that makes it 14 games in a row, a franchise record. Speaking of defense, Johnny Damon made two very good defensive plays in left.

With the win the Yankees have moved into a tie for first place in the AL East with the Red Sox who lost tonight in Minnesota. This is the latest the Yankees have been in or tied for first place since the final game of the 2006 season. That was also the last time the Yankees had sole possession of first. Hopefully that can happen with a Boston loss tomorrow.

The Yankees have an off day tomorrow before opening up a four-game series with the Indians in Cleveland on Friday.

Good win thats all the yankees need to do is just win series. Kevin Cash had a very nice game.

Cash had a very nice game and has played well. Unfortunately for him, his reward will likely be a trip back to the minors.

His walk out to the mound last night was classic. The look on Burnett's face was priceless.

Nice to go into the off day in first place. A Boston loss tonight would be great.

Go Twins!

please oh please get rid of veras. i'm sick of people saying he has good stuff. his stuff doesn't matter if he a) loses the plate after the first batter he faces

and

b) gets crushed whenever he challenges the hitter

Veras=hot stinky garbage

WAIT where is everyone that jumped off the ship when we lost a few games at the start of the season...THIS IS A GOOD TEAM minus some of the refief pitching garbage...just think where we would be if we hadnt gotten sweept in all 5 games by the sox

the fan of the game was that blonde sitting behind home plate to the right side of the right hitter's batters box. anybody else notice her?

hell yes

Veras "loses the plate after the first batter he faces"

We could only hope for that. He usually loses the plate before the first batter he faces.

I think the first batter of an inning against Veras has gotten on base like 13 of 21 times.

And yes, I noticed the hot blonde behind home plate. She was tasty.

A struggling Mark Melancon would still be worlds better than Jose Veras right now.

Abraham had a good line yesterday: "Joe Torre may have wore relievers out. But at least he wore out the good ones and got everything out of them. Girardi wears out the bad ones."

I don't see any reason why Berroa and Veras are still on this team. Hell, Ramiro Pena was shagging fly balls yesterday in case one of our 3 healthy outfielders go down.

Someone said can't wait for Austin Jackson...Are the yanks bringing him up?

Veras is a terrible waste of oxygen.

I sure did see that blonde when I was watching the game. Yikes!

No, they are not bringing A-Jax up. They're not going to rush him. Right now he's striking out too much.

That was short lived. Boston won today, so the Yanks are back in second, a half game behind the Sux.
