Winning pitcher - Fernando Nieve (1-0)
Losing pitcher - Andy Pettitte (6-3)

At least that's how it looked during today's disgusting 6-2 loss to the Mets.

Once again Andy Pettitte had a terrible game at the new stadium. Today allowing 5 runs on 12 hits and a walk in just five innings of work, of his 104 pitches, 66 were strikes. Maybe he's afraid of giving up the long ball and he ends up getting himself into trouble because he's trying to be too fine with his pitches, but he's been a completely different pitcher at home this year. In five starts on the road this year he's 3-1 with a 2.59 ERA. At home he's now 3-2 with a 5.77 ERA. He also allowed another home run today, a two-run shot off the bat of Omir Santos. That brings his season total to 10 homers allowed, 9 of which have come at Yankee Stadium. I don't know what he's gonna have to do, but he's really going to need to figure out how to pitch in this place or else it will come back to haunt this team time and time again as the season goes on.

Another problem, not necessarily with Pettitte but with the pitching staff in general, could be Jorge Posada. Heading into today's game Posada's CERA (catcher's earned run average) was 6.46. That is the worst CERA for anyone in baseball. Well, besides Cleveland's Chris Gimenez, but he's only caught one inning this year. I know he's a great offensive catcher, but is he driving in as many runs on the offensive side as he's costing the team with his terrible pitch calling? If you're wondering here's the CERA for the other three Yankee catchers who have played this year:

Francisco Cervelli: 4.45
Jose Molina: 3.66
Kevin Cash: 3.49

And don't forget how bad his arm is. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but maybe he shouldn't be playing everyday anymore.

For the most part it was a gutless performance by the offense, who were only able to pick up two runs on four hits against Fernando Nieve. Nieve walked 2 and struck out 2, of his 108 pitches, 60 were strikes. They also couldn't get anything going against Shawn Green or Francisco Rodriguez.

For most of the day it looked like they didn't even want to be there. Impatient at the plate, asleep in the field, and a poorly pitched game as well. Just a sorry, sorry performance by the Yankees today, especially coming off yesterday's win. Now they have to face Johan Santana tomorrow with A.J. Burnett getting the start for the Yanks. The way Burnett has been pitching the game could be over by the third. If they can't beat Santana tomorrow it means the Yankees would have basically lost six in a row to the Red Sox and Mets. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I don't have much confidence with that pitching matchup tomorrow.

What I want to know is why the hell they keep batting Cano fifth. He is killing the team and they just pitch around A-Rod and give him nothing to hit so they can get Cano out.

We NEED Cervelli back out there. Joba and Jorge bickering yesterday; Pettitte struggling today; Even Aceves had to shake Jorge off 3 times to achieve the 3 outs he knew he could get...something's got to give.

Greg, I agree with you on Jorge Posada. Where did you find the CERA stats? I'd like to see what the numbers are since he came back from the DL. Thanks!

i actually think Burnett will put together a solid outing tomorrow. I am guessing 7 innings and 2 runs. Plus Santana does give up his share of home runs and the Yankees love to hot them so they could go deep a few times.

Lisa, you can find them here.

You can also find them here

Look under Advanced Fielding. You can see his stats this year and his career. He gives up 6.77 runs per 9 IP for 2009. Molina is at 4.14.

Posada's only good year was 1998 and it was 3.99 which is not that good anyways. HOFers like Bench, McCarver, Munson, Bera, etc...were all in the low 3's.

Posada stinks and he is a huge problem and has been for years. The worse part is Yankee management does nothing.

Girardi was a great game caller when he was a player. Girardi should call the pitches from the bench when Posada is catching. But I doubt he would because that would upset Jorge's ego.

The biggest difference in the staff I noticed since Jorge has been back, is that they nibble the plate. Its either a fastball cookie down the middle of the plate, or a slider/cutter/curve that is trying to live on the outside corner. And quite frankly thats not the way guys like CC, AJ and Joba should pitch. They have the hard stuff and the breaking stuff. They should command that zone because with the stuff they have, the f'ing own the zone. Maybe Pettitte has to nibble a bit, but really, all our pitchers have to start challenging hitters more and I don't think thats going to happen with the way Posada calls a game.

With a top 3 of CC, AJ and Andy this team should be fairing a lot better. I hope Posada gets the day off today with AJ going and Cervelli gets the nod, everything seemed to click when he was starting and splitting time with Cash.

I have been advocating for a Catching platoon with Jorge catching Andy and Wang. Then When AJ, CC and Joba pitch, Cervelli gots the start at the plate with Posada DH-ing. I just see it like this, Cervelli is going to be working with CC, AJ and Joba a lot longer then Jorge will, and Jorge will be catching the guys he knows.

Good points on Posada there Anon. I have also started to notice a difference in the time hes back. I think though that a platoon is not going to happen. Jorge is wrapped up for 2 more seasons after this one I believe. The only thing i see happening is a trade in which we get some arms in return, but jorge is not worth that much.

I also agree that Cano cant bat 5th at the moment. He simply provides no protection for Arod. I wonder if Girardi will tinker with the line up at all if the offense gets weak. I was at the 1st game of this subway series on of the guys suggesting flipping Damon and Cano in the line-up, and when you think about it, it might not be a bad idea.

That makes no sense!

Jeter
Cano
Tex
Arod
Damon
and so on!

Who protects Damon? Damon's speed is wasted in that spot! Thats a joke, your better off flipping Arod and Tex!

Do you think before you type or do you fail to think about anything?

Damon in the 5-hole would not be a terrible move. Sure his speed is wasted but Damon has only stolen 5 bags this year, hes not going on a spree. He's also been clubbing homers on just about any pitch. He is patient enough to take the walk, while Cano and Arod are swing happy. You make the arguement who would protect Damon and its quite simple, Damon protects himself. He takes walks and can steal a bag, you don't nearly pitch around guys like him as often.

Flopping Tex and Arod has been talked about but I don't think it happens, Tex is having too much success to mess with his spot at the moment and Arod will come around, remember, hes only had 118 ABs so far while most of the guys are over at or over 250ABs already.

I didn't know that he was only at a 120 ABs or so. I dont agree with the Cano-Damon flop. It just doesnt make sense to me. You provide valid points but it just doesnt make sense.
