Atlanta was leading 1-0 with one out in the top of the sixth and it looked like another miserable night for the Yankees and their fans. Braves' starter Kenshin Kawakami (Left game after getting hit in the neck with a line drive in the third.) and Kris Medlen had held the Yankees hitless through the first six and two-thirds, and actually had a combined perfect game going until Brett Gardner walked to leadoff the inning. But he was then quickly erased when he was picked off, although the replays clearly showed he was safe. Joe Girardi argued the call and got himself ejected. I'm not sure if it woke the team up, but it sure looked like it did.
The next batter was Francisco Cervelli and he lined a 2-2 pitch deep to left-center field, just making it into the seats for Cervelli's first career homer. The homer tied the game and if Girardi getting tossed didn't fire up the team, the Cervelli homer did. Following the homer Joba Chamberlain lined out for out number two, but then Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon singled, and Mark Teixeira walked to load the bases for Alex Rodriguez. Reliever Jeff Bennett quickly got ahead of A-Rod 0-2, but then left a fastball over the outter half of the plate that A-Rod lined into right center for a big two-run single and the Yankees led 3-1.
Prior to the sixth inning of tonight's game the Yankees hadn't scored in 14 innings, but after a few big hits the Yanks would spend the rest of the night scoring. The Yanks would add five more runs in the final three innings, scoring one in the seventh, two in the eighth (thanks to sloppy Atlanta defense), and two more in the ninth. It was great to see the Yankees tac on those runs, something they haven't been able to do lately. The runs also proved to be very important. Even though they once again had a sub-par game with runners in scoring position (2-for-9), they did get a few very big hits. Besides the Cervelli homer and A-Rod single, Nick Swisher hit a solo homer in the seventh, and Damon and Teixeira drove in run with two-out RBIs in the top of the ninth.
Joba Chamberlain pitched pretty well tonight, allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 6.1 innings pitched, he did not walk a batter, struck out five, and threw 68 of his 99 pitches for strikes. Still no 98 mph heat, but he still had a decent fastball tonight. It averaged 92.33 mph and topped out at 95.6. He had very good breaking stuff tonight, and was able to throw both his slider and curve for strikes. He allowed just one run on a Jeff Francoeur solo homer until running into some trouble and being removed in the seventh.
With the Yankees leading 4-2 the Braves had runners on first and third with one out, Phil Coke came into the game to replace Chamberlain and face the left-handed Nate McLouth. If the game had been at the new Yankee Stadium the ball McLouth hit would have made it a 5-4 Braves lead, luckily for the Yanks they were in Atlanta and it was just a sac-fly to deep right. Coke would then get Yunel Escobar to fly out to end the inning.
Brian Bruney had a shaky eighth inning allowed a run on a hit and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning. His velocity was fine, he just couldn't put the ball where he wanted too. Of his 30 pitches, 17 were strikes.
Because of Bruney's struggles Mariano Rivera had to come in for a four-out save and was dominating. He struck out all four batters he faced, and needed just 19 pitches (14 strikes) to do so. It was Mo's 16th save of the year and the 498th of his Hall of Fame career. Mo also got an at-bat tonight with the bases loaded and two out in the top of the ninth. He lined an 0-1 fastball to center field, but McLouth was there to make the catch. He actually put a good swing on the ball and made solid contact, he just hit it right at McLouth.
The Yanks look to take the series when Andy Pettitte takes the mound in tomorrow rubber game. Veteran right-hander Derek Lowe will start for the Braves.
The next batter was Francisco Cervelli and he lined a 2-2 pitch deep to left-center field, just making it into the seats for Cervelli's first career homer. The homer tied the game and if Girardi getting tossed didn't fire up the team, the Cervelli homer did. It's crazy how Andy and Joba look so much better on the road. More confidence due to lack of bandbox?
Girardi is smart he knows when to get ejected. Each time he got ejected this year it woke up the offense. This is the 2nd time this year that they scored 3 runs right after Girardi got ejected.
If Joba throws his fastball 93-95 consistenly with his 3 other pitches he will be a very good starter. His last two innings his was fastball was hitting 94-95 consistenly. He needs to throw that from the start. Maybe he is trying to pace himself?
Odd to see Bruney walk two batters. He usually has good control and does not walk many batters. Hopefully he is only a little rusty from not pitching that much.

The new stadium is in there heads both of them were not nibbling during this road trip. If the new stadium would play more fair they would have less walks and have a lowere ERA. They trying to make the perfect pitch. Joba era at home is 3 runs higher.
I hate to say it, but I really think when Cervelli catches the pitchers perform better. I don't know exact stats, but they just seem more loose and they are able to shake up more freely. Jorge is notorious for not liking when pitchers shake him off and I think esp for the young guys that might lead to them throwing pitches they are not as comfortable throwing in certain situations. I'm one of the biggest Jorge supporters out there, but we really might have to have him catch less frequently.
Mo had his best outing of the year, Braves batters weren't even close to a good at bat against him.
Yea, the new stadium is clearly screwing with guys like Joba and Pettitte.
yeah they need to get the home-run factor out of their minds. If you give it up give it up but dont stop being aggressive.

I think Cashmen's arrival in Atlanta might have jarred the team. I think the threat of accountability has finally loomed. I don't think it was any smarts on Girardi's part, more like he knows that he may be managing for a career let alone a job now.
