News & Notes

- According to Peter Abraham, Chien-Ming Wang will start Wednesday against the Nationals.

- He's also reporting that Brian Bruney threw 25 pitches of live batters today, including Angel Berroa and Ramiro Pena, and will pitch for Double-A Trenton on Saturday. If all goes well he could return to the Yanks by Tuesday.

- In his career against Boston, CC Sabathia is 2-4, with a 3.91 ERA in seven starts. He's 1-1, with a 2.35 ERA in three starts at Fenway. While he's had some success in the regular season Sabathia was hammered by the Sox in the 2007 ALCS, going 0-2, with a 10.45 ERA in two starts.

- If you're wondering why Francisco Cervelli is in there, you might want to take a look at these numbers: When throwing to Jorge Posada CC is 2-2, with a 4.57 ERA and he's walked 17 and struck out 27 in 39.1 IP. With Cervelli behind the plate he's 3-0, with a 2.25 ERA, and in 40 innings has walked 9 and struck out 29.

- Brad Penny has faced the Yankees one time in his career and it came all the way back on July 13, 2000, at Yankee Stadium. In 5 innings he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4, and picked up the win. He also beat them twice in the 2003 World Series. In 12.1 innings he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 15 hits, walked 5 and struck out 7.

- Nick Swisher posted/tweeted? on his Twitter page at 3 p.m. today: "Alright...enough is enough. Let's get this one tonight."

- The final 20 rounds of the MLB amateur draft took place today, here are the Yankees' final 20 picks:

31st Round: CF Judd Goison (Mountain Brook HS, AL)
32nd Round: 1B John Ebert (U South Carolina Columbia)

I think Swisher is thinking the same thing every Yankee fan is tonight.

JB10 said...

maybe he should learn how to run the bases and catch a routine fly ball.

Anonymous said...

Swisher had an odd game last night. Made some great plays and made some terrible plays.

Anonymous said...

Off topic but Hughes fastball velocity has increased it started with that start against Baltimore he is hitting 94-95 more often.

will said...

Swisher must see a fly ball headed his way in the future. "Let's get this one, let's get this one."

Anonymous said...

Greg -
I think your comparison of Posada and Cervelli catching CC justifies some of the comments made on this site recently about the quality of Posada's game - calling.

Jay

Greg Cohen said...

Jay,

Those comments plus todays lineup are the reason I looked up the numbers. Regarding CC it definitely looks like Posada's hurt him.

Anonymous said...

How about Burnett's numbers when Molina/Cash are catching him compared to when Posada is catching him. I didn't look it up but I think there is a huge difference.

Also John Flatherty on Francesa show said that Posada is someone who doesn't use the scouting report on the hitter. He calls a game by what he as a hitter would be looking for.

Greg Cohen said...

These warnings are ridiculous. That was clearly on purpose, but now, like they're saying in the booth, they've screwed CC with the warning

Anonymous said...

Looks like they picked up right where they left off last night.

Greg Cohen said...

More brilliant base running by Swisher. Unbelievable.

daneptizl said...

Swisher is ... I don't even know what he is...

Greg Cohen said...

And now the homer by Ortiz.... Great.

Mario said...

WTF, if for Girardi has to send a message these bonehead freaking plays have got to stop, Swisher needs to come out of the game, ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR THAT CRAP, but lets continue the downslide, it never ends, fucking beautiful, i'm not wasting the rest of my thurs night watching this crap, to only get more pissed off...

Greg Cohen said...

I agree, but the Yanks bench just isn't deep enough. You bring in Gardner and you lose a potential pinch runner late in the game.

Anonymous said...

Did you guys hear El Duque signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers today?

daneptizl said...

It's not like pinch runners matter since Gardner wasn't even allowed to steal yesterday.

Greg Cohen said...

Good point, Dane. But still, you can't take out Swisher with the bench they have. If Nady was there instead of Berroa then that would be fine.

Anon, I saw that about Duque. Good for him.

Anonymous said...

This is such a joke, they can't even hit Brad Penny. The Sox are in the Yankees heads.

YankeePride3 said...

God damn it. They are pathetic, their making Penny look like Walter Johnson out there.

Greg Cohen said...

Swisher better do something here to make up for him brainless base running.

Greg Cohen said...

... Of course he strikes out.

daneptizl said...

Abomination... just terrible.

Brian Danuff said...

Are you freakin kidding me????

Greg Cohen said...

WTF is going on here? No Damon drops a routine fly ball.

Greg Cohen said...

Good job by CC, but seriously, why is this team so tight?

holycow10 said...

every time the yanks step into fenway...it looks like the life is sucked out of them.they just stop playing there game. i agree wth u Cohen they seem so tight.

AND WHERE THE HELL IS A-ROD THIS SERIES??

Greg Cohen said...

Besides Teixeira, the entire top of the order has been invisible. A-Rod, Jeter, Damon, and Cano.

will said...

This happened last series in fenway, the yankees and redsox switvched uniforms before the game. Although this time I think the yankees swapped with the local girl scouts.

will said...

If the yankees need to go beat up a hobo before these games to boost their confidence, then so be it. What ever it takes to stop this god awful meekishness.

Greg Cohen said...

It really has been a pathetic three games. There's not much more you can say than that. They need to somehow find a way to steal this game tonight.

Anonymous said...

Embarrassing.

Time to put together a rally.

Time to put together an obituary

Greg Cohen said...

YEA CERVELLI!!!!

Brian Danuff said...

YES!!!

Brian Danuff said...

Perfectly played guys. Let's go now and get that go-ahead run in!!

Brian Danuff said...

I really like Cervelli.

Greg Cohen said...

Ballsy ballsy call by Girardi. Very happy it worked out. That's a huge hit for Cervelli.

will said...

Wow, so, did anybody know the yankees were going to be the first major league club to have women on a team? What a wonderful day! Another crack in the glass ceiling. Great to see it was the yankees first!

wnylibrarian said...

Fellow Yankees fans: our new #1 catcher! The handwriting is on the wall with "assistant manager" Jorge.

daneptizl said...

Cervelli won't hit enough to be a #1 catcher. I wish he would, but he very likely won't

daneptizl said...

Come on Alex, it's about time you came through.

Greg Cohen said...

This hitting with RISP has been pathetic.

will said...

How many boxes of cookies would every like to order?

Greg Cohen said...

BIG KNOCK A-ROD!

Shut those Massholes up.

Brian Danuff said...

YES!! 3-1 YANKEES! THE RED SOX CAN SHOVE THAT UP THEIR ASS!!!

Whoo-hoo!!!!

daneptizl said...

Finally man...

wnylibrarian said...

Cervelli is batting .271, is far better behind the plate defensively, and has a strong arm down to second. Posada is batting .297, has shown for his career he is horrible defensively--the converted second baseman he was, and has to throw rainbows to second base to get the ball near the bag as runners steal easily on him. Given time Cervelli can be equal or close to Posada offensively, and is far better defensively. I want to see more Cervelli then Posada.

Anonymous said...

Even the outs that Teix has made in this game have been hit pretty well. He's so locked in right now.

CC needs to hold them for two more at least. I can see him throwing around 130+ pitches tonight, because of the lack of innings that AJ and Wang produced this series.

will said...

Damn, guess joke time is over... until they bring in rivera

JC said...

A-Rod has been pretty clutch this year. He wasn't in his recent little slump, but overall he's been good in the clutch.

I think his average in the 7th inning or later is over .300. He has a walk-off homer, a game-tying homer in the 9th off Lidge and now this....

SteveB said...

It's hard not to really REALLY like Francisco Cervelli.

Frankly, I would like to see CC go 9 innings, if he's not gassed, even if it's a save situation.

Great inning by the Yankees, great baserunning calls by Girardi.

Greg Cohen said...

I agree, Cervelli is very easy to root for. I love the way he plays the game.

Anonymous said...

Let's hope he's our long time backup.

With either Montero or Romine as the starter. Mostly depending on what they do with Jesus.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice inning by CC... A couple more runs would be nice.

daneptizl said...

There's no way Cervelli is going to approach, much less equal what Posada is as a catcher. You're just comparing averages... why don't you go check OBP and slugging... huge difference.

holycow10 said...

YEESS!!! sorry arod i had to call u out like that...i think u heard me...way to work bud.lets get out of unfreindly fenway...ehhh

Anonymous said...

Cervelli is a lot better defensively. Which is what you want from your backup.

He's slowly becoming CCs personal catcher too. I wonder what will happen when Jose comes back. Who is one of the best defensive catcher in all of baseball. Bill James rated him second overall behind his brother (Yadier) last year.

daneptizl said...

I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good backup.

Greg Cohen said...

Pedroia sure is a pesky S.O.B.

Anonymous said...

They're gonna blow it.

will said...

Uh oh

JC said...

Son of a bitch....

Greg Cohen said...

It sure looks that way. CC is done.

will said...

Fn puklis

will said...

Nails is warming up - yikes

Greg Cohen said...

Bases loaded nobody out for the Sox... I guess you can make that 0-8.

Anonymous said...

And we're tied.

w said...

This rain is shit

Greg Cohen said...

This really sucks. What a crushing way to lose.

Jon Bachrach said...

OY VEY!!!

JC said...

And what could've been a huge win with a huge hit from A-Rod turns into another crushing loss....

Time for bed.

Anonymous said...

our bullpen sucks we need to make a trade for a fucking reliever sorry .. cant depend on guys that arent dependable ... another loss due to our shitty fucking bullpen and another game lost to the red sux .. fuck boston its such a dirty city and fuck the red sox they are a shitty team that has gotten the best of our shitty team

Jon Bachrach said...

AT LEAST THE BASES ARENT LOADED ANYMORE

Anonymous said...

Boy these Yankees are impressive. Brad Penny and his over 5 era pitched better than CC? LOL, you are such a good GM Cashman. Absolutley brilliant.

You guys stick up for this horrible Yankees ballclub and they can't score ANY runs vs. Penny.

There isn't a bigger loser team and/or organization right now except for the pirates and nationals.

This Yankees club is 100% choke artists just like their GM. I can't wait to hear the positive thinkers on this one.

Great job Mo, you started it. LOSER.

Greg Cohen said...

Geeez Coke, throw a damn strike.

Jenny Talia said...

Phil Coke walks someone on 4 pitches... NO WAY thats SHOCKING!!!!

JC said...

Oh... And Coke is a total joke. Four-pitch walk? Are you fuckin' serious?!

Anonymous said...

They lost because of their BP? ARe you fuckign kidding me? They scored 3 runs against BRAD FUCKING PENNY. Furthermore, Cahsman built this fuckign useless BP that has stunk ALL season. WHAT DO YOU FUCKING CASHMAN SUPPORTERS SAY NOW??????????????????????????

Idiots.

I would have walked him intentionally , why scrw around

Jon Bachrach said...

Hey Greg

Anonymous said...

yea our bullpen you stupid idiot .. we were up 3-1 so shut your mouth you cock sucker

Greg Cohen said...

What's up Jon?

Anonymous said...

Cashman = LOSER. Just like Posada, Jeter, Damon, Matsui, and the KING of them all Mo. Choke artist since 2001.

Idiots.

Anonymous said...

any way to block the annoying anon's IP address greg?

Anonymous said...

Yup our BP. What about our HITTING dumbass? 0 runs vs. Brad Penny. Dumbass. Get a fucking clue. Who built the BP, FUCKING MORON? Or did it evolve out of nothing? FUckign moron. How's Cashman doing, is he coming up with ways to waste more money on useless players or make trades to give away the farm for terrible players?

MP said...

ill tell ya what, this is why you can't go 1-11 with RISP and expect to beat the sox at fenway

sooner or later that had to come back to bite us...

Greg Cohen said...

Nah, not to my knowledge.

will said...

Wow NAILS! Maybe he's not a pusse

Jon Bachrach said...

Nada, I just got home from work, have some time to watch the game finally. Been busy lately. I am glad the Sox are only up by one after that chaos

Anonymous said...

No, MP its is ALL our BP. Get a clue... dont you know!

JC said...

This anon needs to go. The insults to other posters are just ridiculous.

Not to mention, he knows nothing about the game of baseball.

will said...

I was busting on coke. He talks about his roll like a pussy. And he does blow more than his fair share of games. But I give credit where due - he did a great job.

Anonymous said...

Lets see how these great hitters do in the 9th. Wanna take bets again LOSERS?

will said...

What the hell why do I keep ending up at bars with boston fans??!!

We need murders to go up in manhattan, this is annoying.

w said...

Shit is shit. I hate that god damn city!

Greg Cohen said...

They just can't beat them.

Anonymous said...

i refuse to watch this shitty team till they beat a good team

Anonymous said...

boston is a disgusting city and fenway is a joke it looks like a minor league ballpark

Greg Cohen said...

See Dane, this is what I meant last night when I said it doesn't matter that CC hasn't faced the Sox yet, or that they faced Beckett three times. Even when they have CC on the mound and face Boston's number five, Brad Penny, they still manage to get outplayed in virtually every way.

Anonymous said...

Idiots. That isn't name calling. Its identifying. You peopel are idiots that support this LOSER GM and this loser team that is run by idiots. Then again, birds of a feather flock together....

And, again, NICE CHOKE JOB. All started by MARIANO RIVERA. Way to go Mo. Could you do anymore damage since 2001?

Hey JC what was our battign average with RISP AGAIN today? Idiot.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, you tool, stop name calling or I'm deleting anything you post.

w said...

The bp problem must be addressed they have cost the team at least ten wins

Greg Cohen said...

W, CC blew this game. He completely fell apart in the eighth. Aceves didn't help, but he came in with two on and nobody out in a 3-2 game, not really an easy situation to deal with.

Anonymous said...

this is why you cant have Aceves to pitch in the 8th with those runners on. You need a strikeout pitcher in that situation. Aceves pitches to contact.

Anonymous said...

Cc was over 100 pitches - the only reason he started the 8th is because they have nobody to go to in the pen

Rob said...

the yankees need to forget about boston for right now and they need to forget about this series. They should go home, beat the mets, beat the nationals, etc, and forget about the red sox because they won't see them for a month and a half.

will(w) said...

That was me about cc

Anonymous said...

Delete them all I couldn't care. That's your problem you hate free speech, communist lover. Why dont you move to a country that hates free speech to like Iran, or Saudi Arabia, pharaoh lover.

And, you're still idiots for supporting this GM.

Greg Cohen said...

They're up two, Jon.

Greg Cohen said...

I don't hate free speech, I hate your bullshit. You contribute nothing here.

JB10 said...

no way you should allow nick green to reach to lead off the inning. 2 change ups in a row to a 9 hitter. Blow him away with your fastball. let him beat you on that. Aceves and Coke did fine. Whens Nady due back cause im sick of seeing little leaguers run the bases aka nick swisher. I thought posada was a bad base runner but swish just lapped him in that race. That ump had no balls punching out Youkilis in that at bat. That was a strike all game. Horrible loss. Get em tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

come on stop with the histrionics. boston is a nice city (albeit filled with masshole red sox fans) and fenway is a classic ballpark (unlike this corporate piece of shit "yankee stadium" we have now). sabathia looked like he lost his control on those last 2 pitches to pedroia and he needed to leave at that point. that was the key - stop the momentum right there and you could've held the lead, but NO...girardi is such a wonderful manager and doesn't pull sabathia. for those of you who will counter this by saying "you never pull your ace when they say they're fine" i beg to differ. if they have pitched 125 pitches and have lost a long battle with pedroia then both mentality and physicality are severely diminished and it would've been much more beneficial to bring in aceves at that point. we KNOW we aren't going to score against pabelbum so it is VITAL to control that lead at all costs.

as a side note to those annoying anons - stop with the ad hominem bullshit and make your arguments with opinion based on data as opposed to simply using degrading personal attacks.

will said...

Pharaoh lover lol - it just sounds so retarded its hilarious - how do you take yourself so seriously? Lollllllllll

Mike B. said...

Guys,

OK, I started watching the game as the top of the 7th started. All I can say is this is a disgraceful team. For the first time in 54 years I've decided to take a break for about two weeks or so--no checking the Yanks scores or watching on YES. I'm willing to "eat" the money I paid to get the games. We are a disgrace. I've got mother things to focus on in life.

Greg, surely you can block IP addresses if you choose, no?

At any rate, I'll see you guys in a few weeks (right before I head up to NYC for three weeks. I've not bought any tickets and don't plan on doing so). I've got to tell the truth--I've never been more ashamed to be a Yankees fan. I truly hope things get better.

All the best to almost all of you,

Mike

daneptizl said...

CC pitching does matter, because back then, he could have gave then 7 innings of 1 run ball like today and handed the ball to Bruney and Mo... you're just starting to get panicky.

Greg Cohen said...

Mike, I have no idea how to do it if I can.

Dane, what did CC matter tonight? We had our no. 1 against their no. 5 and got beat.

And you know what, what's to say that Bruney would have held them scoreless?

I'm not getting panicky, they can beat most teams, they just have no chance against Boston.

JC said...

We need an 8th inning guy. The Yanks need to make some type of move. They cannot sit back and wait for Bruney, who may never be fully healthy.

They need to get someone. There's no reason they can't, either. The lack of a 8th inning guy has cost us several games now.

Anonymous said...

we should make a trade with texas or detroit so that they'll knock the red sox out of the first round and we won't have to face them in the alcs

Anonymous said...

Pathetic. Not watching anymore. Done.. with.. this.. team.

dan said...

hey Greg, I havent posted in a few weeks, but after this shitshow Im furious. We have quickly turned into the Red Sox's bitches. Right now, with this team, we wouldnt have a chance if we played them in the ALCS. ( if we can get that far). We need to fix the bullpen ASAP.. and possibly add another starter.Im not trying to get everybody angered, but I've always been a Joba in the pen guy, if they want to keep him in the rotation, than OK, but get an 8th inning guy.. can we atleast try to pry Heath Bell from San Diego, Ive heard that the ChiSox might trade Jenks, why not look into him? Bruney will most likely come back and get hurt again, he's always hurt... in my honest opinion, I think the Red Sox are going to be better than us for many years to come.

holycow10 said...

the yanks will be fine it a looooonnnnggg season yea of course it sucks to be 0-8 to the blowsox and kevin useless and company but thats baseball it is a very weird sport as u all have seen. thats fine thought l take the loses now aganist the sox and the wins at the end of the season when it counts..

o fyi i lived in brooklyn n.y for 17 years then moved up to mass in 97 i live in dracut, mass just about 25-30 min away from boston. after working everyday in boston for the past 6 years it is a mini soho area slash battery park area...but a trashery version. the park is horrible and so are the surronding sreets.brookline ave comm ave...ehhhh bunch of hippies walking around...o man its tough being a bomber fan around unfreindly fenway.

Anonymous said...

@ JC

You are right the yanks do need a 8th inning guy. This is why you need a power arm in the 8th inning. You needed a strikeout in that situation and Aceves is a contact pitcher.

This was a brutal loss CC gave you 7 strong innings. You need two pitchers to finish the game for him. You cant have CC always trying to pitch 8 innings.

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised that place is even allowed to be standing. It's complete bullshit. The Red Sox are 21-8 there and 15-16 on the road it's ridiculous. Any other ball park that ball hit by A-Rod is gone.

Danny said...

Man it's going to be a long season. When you struggle against every team in your division does it really matter how many games you win? Even if they get a wild card will they even show up in an important game?

Anonymous said...

The team looked tight all game long. They made a lot of mental and bad plays in this game. It is in there head they cant beat the red sox. They were pressing.
