PITCHING: Sergio Mitre got the start for the Yankees. He gave up a bloop double and walk in the 1st, but followed with 2 K's to get out of the jam. Mitre threw a perfect 2nd, picking up a strikeout. In the 3rd, he struck out the side while giving up a single and walk. Mitre gave up a single and walk in the 4th, but pitched out of trouble. He was perfect in the 5th & 6th innings. In the 7th, Mitre gave up a leadoff homer by Javier Castillo to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead. With 2 out in the 7th, he gave up an infield hit and was relieved. Mitre's line: 6.2 IP, 1 run, 5 hits, 7 K--2 BB, 100 pitches---60 strikes, 10 groundouts--3 flyouts.
Zach Kroenke relieved Mitre in the 7th, getting the final. He threw a perfect 8th inning. Kroenke got a strikeout to start the bottom of the 9th then gave up 2 singles to put the winning run in scoring position. He followed up with a key doubleplay to end the threat and force extra innings. Kroenke pitched a perfect 10th, getting the win (5-0). 3.1 IP, 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 K--0 walks.
Anthony Claggett came on to pitch a scoreless bottom of the 11th giving up a 1 out double.
OFFENSE: Buffalo started 40 year old Ken Takahashi and he shutout the Yankees threw 6 innings. The Yanks wasted leadoff singles the first 3 innings by Kevin Russo, Juan Miranda and Doug Bernier, respectively. They threatened again in the 4th when Miranda singled and Yurendal de Caster was hit by a pitch, but were stranded. The Yankees threatened again in the 6th. Austin Jackson doubled, Juan Miranda singled, but again were stranded. Buffalo reliever Tim McNabb retired the next 7 batters he faced until 1 out in the 9th. Buffalo brought in a lefty pitcher, John Switzer, to face Juan Miranda. Miranda then hit his 11th homer to tie the game at 1. In the 11th, Shelley Duncan and Miranda reached on walks, and de Caster was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Stewart hit a 2-out grand slam homer (1) to give the Yanks the 5-1 win.
NOTES: Austin Jackson was caught stealing 2nd in the 1st inning for the 1st time this season. He's 14 of 15 in stolen base attempts. Kevin Russo has reached base in 30 straight games. Juan Miranda's homer was his 5th this year off lefty pitching.
