Theirs been a handful of reports linking Roy Halladay to the Red Sox. Supposedly they've already made a strong offer and some have called them the favorites. I'm here to tell you, don't worry. I hate to disagree with Greg but if Boston were to get Roy Halladay it isn't a reason a reason to panic and in the long run it may even be a good thing.
First of all, this is no knock on Roy Halladay. He's one of the very best pitchers in baseball and he's been in that select group for years now. With a few more years like this under his belt, he could be headed for the Hall of Fame. However, because of that the demand for him is very high. From the Yankees, the Jays want Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, and a prospect or two. The general consensus among Yankees fans seems to be that making a deal like that would be a mistake. When they hear that Boston may be able to get Halladay with a similar offer, though, people are ready to give up on the division. Nobody wants the Yankees to mortgage their future for the next year and a half but when Boston seems willing to do just that, everybody gets worried? If Theo wants to give up much more than the package already rumored to be offered, I'll drive Halladay to the airport.
Besides that, Halladay's impact just won't be what some people make it out to be. No one player can make enough of a difference over two months to guarantee them a playoff spot. They're still a flawed team. The Red Sox are hardly the perfectly oiled machine that some make it out to be. Some may be worried about the playoffs as well, its to early to know if we'll even make it but a rotation of Sabathia-Burnett-Pettitte-Chamberlain is still a force to be reckoned with. No one trade will make the Red Sox a lock for the playoffs, let alone the World Series this year.
It obviously depends on what they'd give up for Halladay but if Boston is in on him, it doesn't mean the Yankees have to get involved.
EDIT: I want to make it clear that I do not think getting Halladay would guarentee the Yankees anything either. The point of the post isn't to knock Boston, its that one player isn't going to make a season for anybody and its not worth selling off your entire future for that one player.

the deal wont happen , they are trying to get v-mart. Cant get both, so dont worry about bosox getting him.

If the sox want to give up buchholtz and others for a dh , when they already have one, be my guest.

Mike's not being biased, I disagree with him, but he clearly said that he doesn't think it would guarantee the Yanks anything either.

I think the bottom line is the Sox WANT Halladay, but really NEED Victor Martinez.
Think about it. Mike Lowell is lost for the season. They need a 3rd baseman. Kevin Youkilis played 3rd in the past. V Mart plays 1st. 3rd and 1st base problems solved.
The also keep more prospects in a deal for Martinez then they do for Doc, I think this is why they will get VMart and not Halladay.
if they can get v-mart for anything less than bucholtz plus, then the indians should just stop playing baseball.
How is Lowell lost for the season? He's DHing tonight, and he was in the field last night.

I agree with Mike and Mario, let the Red Sox repeat the Yankees mistakes now that the expectation of success is mandatory for them.
I understand where people are trying to go with the "repeated the Yankees mistakes", but when did they ever trade for the one of the best pitchers in the league that was 32 years old at the time?
Greg, we all hope the Red Sox give up the next Hanley Ramirez again. That's why this could be a good thing.
Just overloading for one year and mortgaging the future when the team is good enough as it is, is the wrong idea. Halladay, at best, will give us a few more wins. So we win maybe 8 or so more games at the cost of an entire decade?!
With that attitude, the Yankees might as well have traded Jeter, Williams, Posada, and Rivera. Hey, they were the future.
Some people have the wrong idea on how to run a baseball team. We can't use this idiotic, "who cares about the future," attitude. It makes me sick.

I'm not saying the Yanks should get Halladay. I am saying that if the Red Sox get him it's bad news for us. Trading Hanley hardly has hurt them. I think they've been pretty happy with what Beckett and Lowell have given them.
Again, I have no fear of Roy Halladay. He's been a Yankee killer for sure, but I don't see a a huge disadvantage in pitting Sabathia/Burnett/Chamberlin against Beckett/Halladay/Lester.

The Red Sox, and Theo Epstein in particular, are showing their desperation with all this trade nonsense. They figured out very quickly that $400 million buys quite a bit of talent.
Is Chamberlain even going to be available for the playoffs? If he gets cut off from inning limits how will he be built back up in time for the playoffs? Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte vs. Beckett, Halladay, and Lester does not go well with me.
