Another day, another pitcher's duel between the Tigers and Yankees. Nobody could have anticipated a game that would equal yesterday's between Justin Verlander and C.C. Sabathia. However, Joba Chamberlain and Edwin Jackson did their best. On a day celebrating the Yankees past, it was the stars of today and tomorrow that won the game for the Yankees to sweep a first place team and put them just one game behind the Red Sox.1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E | ||

The game did not start off well. Joba got into a jam right off the bat and it looked like he was off to another bad outing. The Tigers threatened to score with first a walk and then a single. However, Joba got out of it and would go on to pitch one of his best games of the year. The Tigers would strike first though with a solo shot from Craig Thomas in the fourth. What's interesting, though, is how well Joba recovered.
In other starts, Joba might have started nibbling and then given up another, bigger homer. However, today he came right back to get the next three guys and Detroit would only threaten one more time, in the pivotal fifth. That was hardly Joba's fault though. Nick Swisher let a ball hit by Curtis Granderson get through his legs with one out in the inning. The batter being Curtis Granderson, it became a triple. Joba then hit Placido Polanco with a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. Have no fear though, Joba got Miguel Cabrera to hit an easily handled pop up. Joba completed the inning with a a strikeout of Marcus Thames and an emphatic fist pump. Joba cruised for a little while more and let the two Phils (Hughes and Coke) and Mariano finish the game.
Their isn't nearly as much to write about the offensive side of the game. Edwin Jackson matched Joba with zeroes but lost his shutout the same inning Joba did. Jackson got a quick two outs in the fourth but then ran into some trouble. A-Rod tied things up with his own solo homer. The Yanks would threaten more that inning with two walks but wouldn't score. Mark Texeira then broke the tie with a moonshot to rightfield that would give the Yankees the lead and win.
Joba was really impressive in this one and its great to see him give the Yanks some length. He probably could have gone even longer had Girardi not been so cautious but nobody can complain about 6.2 innings, 1 run, 8 K's, and 3 BB's. He was throwing hard and challenging hitters. If he does that in the second half, the Yankees are going to have a potent weapon on their hands. Its great to see the Yankees sweep a first place team and with a Boston loss at the hands of Roy Halladay, they're now just a game back in the division.

and it was a good b'day because of this win!
Well Done.
But, Joba has had his speed all along.
He has been on an Injury Prevention Program to stretch out his arm.
He hit 97 today several times, just like he did a month ago.
What month did he get injured last year?
I'd say he's made it there safely this year.
Remember, he skipped the minors altogether...
"Its" there, has been there and will definitely be there and healthy for the 2nd half.
Read what Giaradi has been saying about him "being stronger" in the 2nd half, folks.
They just trained Joba as a minor; but in & against the Majors.
When have you seen that before?
The future is Joba, to Hughes, to Mo. And that's what the Yankees saw today.
Paddy
With all the talk about the new stadium being such a hitters friendly ballpark. The last two games you saw 2-1 pitching duels. Great pitching by Joba, CC, Verlander and Jackson.
Its funny for the people that want Hughes in the rotation and Joba in the pen. Hughes has been better than Joba in the bullpen and Joba has been the much better starter. Hughes has been ridiculous in the bullpen.
Hughes has been unbelievable out of the pen. I never in a million years saw that coming. I figured he could be a good reliever but nothing like this.
The guy is turning into a beast.
I have to admit, leaving Hughes in the bullpen is tempting in a way that leaving Joba there never has been.

Count me among those that never saw this coming. But I have always been a big believer in Hughes.
I didn't get a chance to watch the game today. Glad to hear Joba did well and very glad they swept Detroit.
Hopefully they can keep it going tomorrow because I will be at the game.
Caught part of the Old Timers Game earlier and then watched the intros later on Yankees Encore.
Nobody does... or could do Old Timers Day better than the Yanks!!!
Yea CF, Joba what awesome today. Especially after he got into that jam in the 5th. From that point on he was a different pitcher. I think getting out of that was a huge confidence booster for him. Now he has to figure out what worked today and repeat it in his next start and the one after, and so on. However, consistency is usually the problem with young pitchers so it will be interesting to see how he handles this.
Just my opinion on Joba. I think he is trying too hard to pitch to contact and nibble at corners.
Joba is a strikeout pitcher he needs to forget about pitching to contact. Today he was attacking hitters and striking them out. That is the type of pitcher he is. He is not a mike mussina type. Also they did a great job of mixing all four of his pitches.
those last two strike outs to end his 7th were just plain sick! even after 100 pitches his velocity was at 94-96. i hope this is a indication of what we are going to see from him the rest of the season.
Thanks. I was pissed that I couldn't watch or listen to the game because of work. The quick updates I got on gameday don't tell much so I checked the blog to get quick updates.
Really looking forward to going to the game tonight. Been a while since I've been at the Stadium.
I think I have 8 more games scheduled this year and hopefully a few others... especially post season.
By the way, it was great to see Zimmer back at the Stadium.
YES had a very nice segment with Bobby Mercer's wife. Very nice lady and old school love story at that. RIP Bobby you are a class act!!!!!
Munson and Murcer were my first two Yankee faves. Once again, the Yanks show why they are the class of baseball by honoring not only past players but the wives of some of those who have passed.
I can't believe that in less than 2 weeks it will be 30 years since Thurman died.
I miss them both.
