News & Notes
Break up the Yankees: In their last 30 games they're 23-7, and they're now two and a half games ahead of the Red Sox for first place. They're 17-7 in July and since Alex Rodriguez returned they're 48-24.
- Joba Chamberlain has faced the Rays 8 times in his career, twice as a starter, and has no decisions and a 1.88 ERA. In 14.1 innings pitched he's allowed 3 runs on 9 hits, walked 4, and struck out 11. He's faced them on June 6th at Yankee Stadium, and in 6 innings allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, walked one, and struck out 4.
Since the all-star break Joba is 2-0, with a 1.32 ERA. In 13.2 innings he's allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 6 and struck out 14.
- Matt Garza is 1-2, with a 3.79 ERA in seven games (six starts) against the Yankees. He took a no decision against them earlier this year when he and Joba Chamberlain had their first matchup. That night he allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2 in 5 innings pitched.
- The Yankees are second in the American League with a 26-22 record on the road, behind only the Angels who are 28-20.
- A win tonight would give the Yanks their ninth series win out of their previous ten.
- Jorge Posada told Marc Carig what he felt about Toronto's asking price for Roy Halladay: "What they're asking for isn't fair."
- Carig also tweets that Alfredo Aceves "threw off mound, says fastball jumped out of his hand."
He's unavailable tonight, but should be ready to pitch tomorrow.
- Brett Tomko was released today.
Blog Stuff: A reader asked me today why I haven't had any live chats when other Yankees blogs have them, and you know what, he has a point. So I was thinking of having a live chat sometime Friday afternoon for the trade deadline. Would you guys be interested in something like that?
Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.
75 Comments:
Greg a live chat would be cool, also are you going to add a message board?
Both ideas would be great additions, I would attend the chat but unfortunatly work is in the way of that.
I'm thinking about the message board, you like the idea or no?
A lot of trades 2day... Too bad chat wasnt ready for this...
Greg Absolutely love de idea i wish we could have a live chat during games when u could.
Yanks flashing some leather tonight. Nice to see, especially after last night.
The Giants acquired Freddy Sanchez traded from the Pirates for Double-A pitcher Tim Alderson.
Baseball American ranked Alderson the #4 prospect in the Giants' farm system.
... And the Yanks lead 2-0.
IRC freenode #yankees baby. not even used. Alas, most dont know IRC and so are wowed when someone reinvents the wheel (twitter etc).
twitter is a chat (with limited char count of course).
no forum, forums are so annoying.
I cant believe Toronto is considering trading Halladay in-division. Philly still seems a favorite, tho the Jays wont get as much, but wont have to play him either.
if people are so interested in chat how come they hardly post in these game threads?
Chats are easier for the user than post comments. You just put your name in once and get immediate responses.
Joba pitching well, alittle trouble here in 5th,
True Mario, this is a huge batter for Joba.
Joba has been fantastic the past few starts.
The fifth is always the key inning for him.
Thumbs for both forum and chat, great ideas

Hey Mike, can you make it at 3 on Friday for the Trade Deadline chat?
... A's lead the Sox 6-3 in the top of the 5th.
Just sent you a PM, I should be good. Unless something comes up of course.
Cano's on fire. The second half surge is in full swing.
That was a rocket.... 3-0 Yanks!
...
Alright Mike, so you hear that folks? Live chat @ 3 PM on Friday afternoon. Will run up to and through the 4 PM deadline. BE THERE!
Any1 think Jeter is having an MVP type year? I think he can win it this yr...
If anybody other than Mauer wins the MVP, the writers are insane. Jeter's having a good year but what Mauer is doing is insane.
Yea, right now I'd give it to Mauer, he's putting up ridiculous numbers. But Jeter is having a great season, there's no doubt about that. He'll get some MVP votes.
Joba just dealing
Yea, he looks great.
So Joba will have to be transitioned to the bullpen come playoff time again next year.... meh.
We'll see about that. I doubt highly that they'll throw Hughes right into the playoff rotation, let alone Sergio Mitre.
So you think they'll shut him down and start him back up again to start in the playoffs like you think they'll do this year?
So you think they'll shut him down and start him back up again to start in the playoffs like you think they'll do this year?
Woo hoo, 8-3 A's!
I like that Coke, Aceves, and Hughes got 3 straight days of rest.
I think the Yankees are going to skip his starts whenever possible by using off days to their advantage and having C.C./A.J. occasionally go on three days rest. I wouldn't be surprised if he hit the DL with a made up injury either. They're also going to push the limit a bit if need be.
The bottom line is they're not starting Sergio Mitre in a playoff game. It just won't happen.
I do too, it will be very good for the long-term success of the pen. Rest now so you have something in the tank when October rolls around.
Yeah, they can't keep riding these guys the way they have been. We'll probably see Hughes today though.
So do you think we'd get enough participation for a forum to work?
I'm not sure, I think it's possible, especially given a little time.
Set up a poll
It's already up, look on the right sidebar... Meanwhile the Yanks are now up 4-0.
Obviously Mitre won't be starting in the playoffs, but there's not enough off days and I don't think they'll do something careless like pitching those 2 on 3 days' rest...
Hughes returning to the rotation would make sense since the reason they're leaving him in the bullpen is because he's been dominant, and Joba can essentially replace him... it'll definitely be interesting to see what they do though.
Well if we actually have 74 people participating it could definitely work. I think we should go for it.
Just sent you a PM, Mike.
The question is whether or not you really trust Hughes to be able to replace Joba if he's throwing the way he is right now. The middle of a pennant race is not the time to find out. Especially if you transition Joba to the bullpen and basically lose him for the rest of the year.
Got it, I can do the summary
Meh... just give the inning to Robertson and save Hughes.
Nah, Hughes actually needs to get his innings count up.
CG for Joba?
Nah, he's done. Let Hughes close it out. If they score a few more maybe Melancon can get some more work in.
I understand getting innings, but he won't get anywhere close in the bullpen... he could pitch an inning each game for the rest of the year and he'll still fall 35 innings short(including 15 in the playoffs. So the innings thing doesn't work in the bullpen, because he won't get anywhere close.
Ahhhh Bruney, good call Joe.
well there probably goes the shutout, thanks bruney..
He has no idea where the ball is going.
Bruney throwing 90-93.
Lets not forget about winter ball with Hughes.
Count Bruney among the biggest dissapointments this year. Second only to Wang probably.
get bruney out of the game, he's getting hammered
God, Bruney stunk.
Okay now its getting really scary. This would be the worst loss of the year if they blow it.
Bruney needs to go down to AAA to get some work, he hasn't looked good for a few games now..
... overreacting a bit there... they still need to score 4 runs with 2 outs left
Bruney cant find it, very inconsistant... Hopefully Marte comes back and can throw some strikes, get batters out... Bullpen needs help...
tying run on deck
Boston down 8-5
Four-pitch walk for Mo?
.... Whoa.
Come Mo, end this.
YES!
Thank god for Mariano
maybe JOBA should have pitched the 9th, couldn't have done any worse then bruney,
and boston is losing! I wonder what John Henry's twitter is saying. Probably something like 3 1/2 behind a team we beat 8x and we are still behind them? HA
I wonder if Bruney is ever gonna see meaningful innings again, at least thi season, at least with the Yankees.
BTW, great idea to put a message board Greg, that'd be awesome.
Good night everybody, 4:14 am here, time to sleep.
Go Bombers.
Vinsanity, Bruney needs work. Like Mario suggested before, maybe sending him down for a week is the way to go. Let him pitch in three or four games, and then call him back up.
good night man.
Sox lose!
Yanks up 3.5!
Hey Greg, great win for the Yanks tonight. A great performance by Joba and a good night for the offense.
Sorry I haven't been around much. I'm still a big fan of the blog, it's just with baseball and camp and all that other stuff, I've only been able to post a couple comments a day.
I'm taking a tour of the new Stadium on Monday with my camp. Then on Friday I'm going to the Yankees-Red Sox game. It's gonna be awesome man.
See ya tomorrow, and LET'S GO YANKEES!!
Hey YB, the Yanks just keep on rolling. Joba has now thrown three gems in a row, tonight was arguably his best game of his career (The game against Boston when he beat Beckett was pretty damn good too.).
That's great man, enjoy the tour and the game. I gotta get tix for that series. Stubhub time.
3 1/2 up on the red sux! Very nice.
Joba is finally pitching like the guy the Yanks have been waiting for and his innings are running out.
If the Yanks stick to limiting him to only 150 innings, he is 5 starts like tonight away from the pen.
Obviously he probably wont pitch 8 innings per game but the deadline looms ever closer.
Hope Cash has a plan.
Nice to wake up and see the Yanks with the best record in baseball.
Isn't it great?
By the way, sorry about the lack of a game summary. I couldn't get it posted last night with all the rumors and stuff. I'll try to get it posted this morning.
