I'm tired, the game sucked, and I have to wake up in five hours to go play paintball, so I'm going to try to make this short.

Joba Chamberlain stunk. More of the same crap - can't throw strikes, too many deep counts, and less velocity on the fastball.

Things started well; he had a 5-1 lead and was pitching a pretty good game for the first four inning. But after a couple of hits, a blown call on a stolen base, and an Alex Rodriguez throwing error, everything fell apart for Joba in the fifth. On the first pitch following the error he allowed a 3-run homer to Kendry Morales to tie things at five, and then a double to the next batter before being taken out of the game. 4.1 innings, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 94 pitches/58 strikes, in other words he was awful. And when you consider he had a 5-1 lead in the fifth it makes it even worse.

I've always said Joba should be a starter, but right now he certainly doesn't look like one. He's going to have to figure things out, because these kinds of starts aren't going to cut it.

Mark Melancon had a rough first outing since coming back from Scranton. In 2.1 innings he allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits. He was also hurt by an error, this time when Derek Jeter dropped a pop up. It turned out to be a major play in the game because at the time the Yanks trailed by just one and the error led to three big runs.

Those three runs came via another three-run homer, this time off the bat of the light-hitting Erick Aybar. Brian Bruney gave up the bomb and continued his struggles since coming off the DL. With Phil Hughes unavailable tonight Bruney had to come up with a big out and failed miserably. With a runner on second and two out in a one-run game, Bruney was called upon to get Jeff Mathis, but after walking him on four pitches he gave up the homer to Aybar. I don't know if Bruney is still hurt, but he's not the same pitcher he was earlier in the season.

As far as the offense goes I can't complain. They spotted their starter a 5-1 lead, fought back to cut it to one after the Angels took the lead, and were about ten feet away from a Hideki Matsui grand slam that would have given the Yanks a three-run lead in the eighth. Had that ball been hit at Yankee Stadium, it's ten rows back in the seats.

Alex Rodriguez had three hits including his 15th homer of the season, and two RBI. The homer gave the Yanks a 5-1 lead in the the top of the fifth. At the time I thought it was a very important insurance run. Derek Jeter picked up four hits. Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera, and Johnny Damon each had at least one RBI on the night.

The Yankees just can't beat this team in Anaheim. They're now 5-15 at Angel Stadium since 2005. Tonight's loss combined with the Red Sox 1-0 win over the Royals puts Boston back up in the division by one game. Hopefully they can even up this series with Andy Pettitte on the mound tomorrow.

OK, that was a little longer than I had expected... Anyway, I'll try to post something in the morning before I head out. I won't be back for the game, but a game thread will be posted.

I wish Joba can go back to the bullpen but they have no choice right now. My patience is done with him as a starter for this year. He should have a lot more W's if he can go deeper in the game and find the strike zone.

Hank "Fredo" Steinbrenner, the "baseball man" degreed that Joba is a starter. Until something happens in the bullpen where they "must" use Joba to relieve, he's not going anywhere soon. So far I count 6 games we should have won if he were in the bullpen this year, not counting games we lost because he started.

With that I traveled 3,000 + miles to see Joba labor through 2 plus hours in less than 5 innings and blow another. At least the California weather is great and the women fine.

I'll also be at the games Saturday and Sunday, (field level near 3rd base 12 rows in). The trip is less expensive than one seat in the same seating area at Yankee Stadium!

Then on to San Diego for 2 games at Petco Park next week (first time at this stadium). In between the ball games I have work to do and some meetings.

PS. Went to Citi Field again Thursday night to see the Dodgers. Besides a nice place to watch a game and walk around, I have to say that the food there is unbelievable.

Gettin' sick and tired of this bullshit with Joba. Seriously.

Could there be something wrong with his shoulder?

I'm not sure Joba would be any better in the pen right now. His velocity is down and he doesn't have the same stuff he had before injury. Somethings definitely wrong. If there were someone else ready to fill in his starting role, I'd send him down to the minors.

I feel the same way, Jeff.

um...what about Jeter's error?

We should have won last night, but losses will come. You can't expect to win every night, no matter how good the Yankees have been of late. This doesn't put us in a bad position. Boston won, so we're 1 game back. Just 1. So let's regroup today and even the series.

.... Joba's velocity was down? Joba averaged 93.5 with his fastball... you don't need more velocity than that to be successful.

I have sat here and read the messeges and I was thinking "Yes I think Joba should go back to the pen and all that BS about it". Then I stop and think atleast in the last two games, yes he has pitched poorly and yes his velocity is of concerns to us fans although not to management. But I also think that atleast in his last two starts when Joba pitches the team not only Joba, have been victims of many erros on the field. Last night two erros, think about this, two erros cost the team not just Joba 6 runs. If it would not had been for those two errors the outcome of the game could have different.

the scoreboard was consistent 91/92the last 2 innings.

the errors did hurt but the HR he gave up was all him. A nothing 91 mph fastball.

errors didn't help, help! I just woke up its not even 9:00 AM yet on the west coast. Got to get ready to go to the game.

Who Miller, me? I put it in there.

Here's the paragraph:

"Mark Melancon had a rough first outing since coming back from Scranton. In 2.1 innings he allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits. Looking at MLB.com it appears you're right Dane, I guess I missed that, oh well, he still was awful even with his velocity. So I guess that makes me feel worse.
