Trouble in the Bullpen

Other than last night's game, the Yankees have been rolling. A large part of that has been the unbelievable jobs they've been getting from the bullpen. Mariano and Hughes have been untouchable and Coke and Aceves have also done a great job. However, with Aceves sore shoulder, I'm feeling a little uneasy with the bullpen situation. Are these guys going to hit a wall soon with all the innings they've thrown?

Joe Girardi has done a good job of spreading out his innings from the bullpen. However, they're still fourth in the league in innings pitched and Alfredo Aceves is suffering from a sore shoulder. The Yanks had this problem last year to. Jose Veras and Edwar Ramirez were cruising along until August when they hit a wall and just lost it. I have faith in Hughes and Mariano. However, lets hope Coke and Aceves don't become this year's Edwar and Veras.

I'm sure Cashman realizes this to. I just hope that he doesn't make the same mistake he did last year. Last year he went out and gave up Jose Tabata for Damaso Marte and Xavier Nady. It looked good at the time and in the end the Pirates didn't get to much either. However, Marte in particular has been a complete disaster. Now we're faced with a similar option in Scott Downs or any number of "proven" relievers. The right move isn't to go out and give up quality prospects for guys like that. Instead, Joe Girardi needs to give other guys more innings. Mark Melancon was excellent last night and should get more innings, David Robertson looks good, and Brian Bruney definitely has shown he potential to be great.

As we get into the stretch, the Yanks need some more depth in the bullpen and can't let themselves fall into the same trap they have in the past by trusting overworked guys like they have in the past.

I think if Girardi would use Melancon a bit more and maybe if Bruney steps up to pre-injury form, then the 'pen is fine. Melancon's appearance last night was his 1st since July 8th I believe. The kid needs regular work to show what he can do. To be safe though I think the Yanks need to try to pry Downs or Frasor from the Jays.

Enough of this CC hate, anyone who thought he was going to do what his did in the NL in the AL east needs to rethink things. He's been very solid for the Yanks, and has gotten into the 7th more than any other Yankees pitcher. Has he had his bad games? Sure, but as long as he finishes the season with an ERA in the mid-3's and 15+ plus wins I'll be happy, and both are very likely.

As for the pen and Mike's post, I agree, there are concerns. This is one of the reasons I really like the idea of adding Scott Downs.

C.C. has been disapointing but let's give him credit where its due. He's given the Yankees innings. I'd like to see him get that ERA down a bit but he's beena horse.

Please dont compare Coke and Ace to Edwar and Veras.

Both Coke and Aceves were starters they are used to pitching a lot. Anyway Girardi hasn't worn them down. They both are not in the top 20 in relief innings pitch.

I'm sorry but I am also disappointed with CC. Of course he wasn't going to dominate like he did in the NL last year, but he's nothing like what we paid him for. Burnett's been the ace of the staff thus far. Let's hope CC can rebound and earn his money.

The CC hate is undeserved ...last year he didn't turn it around till the second half.. hopefully that holds true this year
