Yanks Interested In Grabow and Qualls?

First the report on Grabow from George A. King III:

Pittsburgh had two scouts at last night's game, Jim Benedict, a former Yankees scout, and Larry Corrigan. Their presence fueled speculation the Yankees have an interest in 30-year-old lefty reliever John Grabow.

With Damaso Marte's return from shoulder problems looking less likely by the day, the Yankees could use a second lefty to complement Phil Coke, who has done very well.

Grabow, who is making $2.3 million this year, is 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA in 35 games. Lefties are hitting .262 (11-for-42) against him and righties are at .255 (24-for-92).

The Dodgers and the Rockies also had scouts on hand.

And here's the info on Qualls from Jon Paul Morosi:
The Yankees' bullpen performed well during their recent seven-game winning streak, which ended Thursday night, but they are keeping a close eye on Arizona reliever Chad Qualls. He has converted 13 of 17 save opportunities this year but blew his latest opportunity Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Brian Bruney has been inconsistent for New York since returning from the disabled list in mid-June; if that trend continues, the team's incentive to acquire Qualls would increase.

The Yankees could definitely use another left-hander in the pen, but I don't know is Grabow is the guy. First of all, he's another NL reliever. Second, throughout his entire career lefties (.269) have hit better against him than righties (.257). If they're going to trade for a lefty, at least get a guy who can get left-handed hitters out.

Qualls had a very good year last season but has struggled a bit this year, posting a 4.22 ERA in the NL West. He started off pretty well, but had gotten worse and worse as the season has gone on. The situation they have in Arizona could be part of the problem.

To be honest I don't really like the idea of either of these two. I'm just a little nervous when it comes to NL relievers. Can you blame me?

I agree, both of these guys aren't worth it.

No to both. Grabow has a 3.75 ERA in the NL central. He would get rocked in the al east. Qualls is not very good. Yankees can find someone better to replace Tomko
