8/11 Minor League Report

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (65-49) beat Norfolk (62-54) 9-0: Box Score - Recap

PITCHING: Russ Ortiz made his 2nd start for the Yanks in this game. In his 1st start he threw 6 shutout innings. He followed that start up with another great outing going 7 shutout, 1-hit innings. Ortiz ran into trouble in the 1st inning when a 2 base error by Reegie Corona and wild pitch put a runner at 3rd, but he worked out of the jam. Ortiz threw a perfect 2nd inning, picking up his 1st strikeout. Ortiz threw a scoreless 3rd after giving up a leadoff single. That was the only hit Ortiz would give up in the game. He threw a scoreless 4th inning, allowing a walk. He tossed a perfect 5th, striking out the side. Ortiz kept the scoreless string going in the 6th. He gave up a walk, but wiped it out by forcing a double play. Ortiz finished strong with a perfect 7th inning, picking up his 6th strikeout. He has 13 scoreless innings since joining SWB, allowing only 5 hits. Ortiz got the win (2-0). Ortiz' line: 7.0 IP, 0 runs, 1 hit, 6 K--3 walks. 93 pitches---50 strikes, 9 groundouts - 7 flyouts

Damaso Marte came on to pitch a perfect 8th inning. ... Edwar Ramirez came on to pitch a scoreless 9th inning, giving up a double, only the 2nd Norfolk hit of the game.

OFFENSE: SWB got to Norfolk starter David Pauley in the 3rd inning for a 2-0 lead. Yurendell de Caster singled, Chris Stewart was hit by a pitch, Kevin Russo laid down a sac bunt. Reegie Corona had a rbi single, and Austin Jackson got an RBI on an error. The Yanks knocked Pauley out of the game in the 5th. Kevin Russo led off the 5th with his 2nd homer of the year, and 2nd in 2 nights. SWB then loaded the bases when Corona reached on an error, Jackson singled, and Shelley Duncan walked with nobody out. Juan Miranda followed with a 2-run double off the centerfield wall., just missing a grand slam. That knocked Pauley out of the game. Cody Ransom then hit a 2-run double off reliever Ross Wolf. Stewart then added a rbi single to give SWB a 8-0 lead. Cody led off the 7th with a solo homer to up the SWB lead to 9-0.

NOTES: Cody Ransom cleared waivers and acceptance and signed with SWB. Doug Bernier was put on the DL to make room for Ransom on the roster. The 6 runs in the 5th inning was the 3rd time this year they've scored that many.
