News & Notes

Break up the Yankees? Not so fast:
They've lost three of their last four, four of their last six, and five of their last nine. They begin play today just a half-game up on the Red Sox in the AL East.

- In 38 games (37 starts) Andy Pettitte is 18-12 with a 4.25 ERA against Toronto. In Toronto he's 13-5, with a 3.92 ERA in 20 game (19 starts). He's faced them twice this year and is 1-1, with 5.25 ERA. He was great in his start at Rogers Centre, a game he went 6 innings and allowed just a 1 earned on 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2.

- Roy Halladay has faced the Yankees 34 times, 32 as a starter, and is 16-5 with a 2.90 ERA. In two starts against them this year, he's 1-1, with a 3.38 ERA. He dominated the Yanks back on 5/12 when he threw a complete game and held them to just a run on 5 hits, but gave up 5 runs on 9 hits at the Stadium on the 4th of July.

- The Yanks have won five of the seven games against the Jays this year.

- The Yankees are just 18-for-77 (.233) on the road trip with RISP.

- Alex Rodriguez has not homered in 53 at-bats.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

Count me among those very worried about this series. I'd like to go up against Boston with a little momentum but it doesn't seem likely

daneptizl said...

A-Rod got bailed out on that bad decision.

Brian Danuff said...

Alright!!! 1-0 Yanks on A-Rod's RBI double.

Also, I'm only a bit worried about this series Mike. We got to Halladay the last time we faced him (scored 5 runs on July 4th) and are now leading 2-0, and we are defenitely capable of beating the youngster Rzepczynski tomorrow.

That last play was sick. A-Rod was on 2nd, and Matsui grounded it to 1st. Millar flipped to Halladay but he took his eyes off the ball and dropped it. Doc thrw home, but A-Rod was smart by hustling home and sliding right into Barajas' glove, which knocked the ball out to allow him to score. Good to see the Yanks taking advantage of mistakes early. 2-0 Bombers against Halladay and the Jays.

Mike N. said...

Well a 2-0 leads makes me feel a bit better.

Brian Danuff said...

Also I never got a chance to congratulate you on your partnership with Greg on SIH. You've done a nice job so far.

Mike N. said...

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Greg Cohen said...

Yep Mike has been a great addition to the SIH team. I'm very happy to have him on board.

I'm also looking forward to more posts from Carlos, he, like Mike, knows his Yankee baseball.

Mike N. said...

Nice comeback inning from Halladay.

Brian Danuff said...

So do I! Think about adding me to the team?

Just kidding of course.

Mike N. said...

Andy looking great

YB, you wanna write here? Send me an email at GCohen9782@gmail.com and we can talk there.

Come on Andy, don't blow this lead.

Mario said...

come on double play ball, and this is a memory

Greg Cohen said...

This is a big batter in this game... two on, two out, 2-1 game... Come on Andy!

Greg Cohen said...

Atta boy Andy, I'll take that. One run in that situation ain't too bad at all.

Greg Cohen said...

Oye, another base runner for the Jays.

Brian Danuff said...

Greg, I sent you an e-mail about me possibly writing for SIH.

Niiiiiicccceeee double play for the Yanks.

Greg Cohen said...

If Mark Teixeira doesn't get a good number of MVP votes there is seriously something wrong with the process. Every game this guy does something that Giambi would never have been able to do, and others would at least have trouble doing.

Anyway, good job settling down by Andy. Now the Yanks owe him a couple more runs.

Greg Cohen said...

Check your inbox, YB.

Vinsanity13 said...

I knew Doc really wanted to come to NY, he had already shaved his beard!

Good pitching matchup so far btw.

Go Bombers.

Greg Cohen said...

Geeez, Halladay is in full-blown shutdown mode right now. These two runs might be it for us tonight.

Capone said...

Looks like we're done scoring runs tonight...

Greg Cohen said...

Nice range Leche.

Brian Danuff said...

Well if Pettitte could hold off the Jays offense, 2 runs could possibly be all we need.

Mike N. said...

I loved the look on Melky's face when he caught that.

Mike N. said...

Melky's been playing well all around lately.

Vinsanity13 said...

I can't stand the first pitch hitting by Roby, I'll never can.

Those GIDP right after a fell good base hit by Jorge just kill me!

Let's hope the Jays don't come back, because I don't have the feeling the Yanks can score a bunch more runs against Halladay.

But then again, everything's possible.

Go Bombers.

Brian Danuff said...

Yep, he's had a great year.

Also, if you guys haven't heard, I just joined Sliding Into Home and will contribute to the blog just like Mike, Carlos, and Greg does!

Mike N. said...

Andy has looked like the Andy of old his last few starts. He better get out of this though, otherwise they're in big trouble.

Mike N. said...

Cool YB. Have you blogged before?

Greg Cohen said...

The SIH team just continues to grow, which I think is awesome. Different opinions lead to better discussions if you ask me.

I'm just thrilled you guys actually want to write for the site.

OK, remember how I said that batter a few innings ago was huge. Well, it was, but this at-bat is bigger.

Greg Cohen said...

Yea Mike, he runs the Yankee Kid Talk blog - http://www.yankeeskidtalk.com/

Mike N. said...

Cool, happy to hear it

Brian Danuff said...

Mike,

I have my own site called Yankees Kid Talk. I've updated it daily, but haven't gotten many views, so that's probably why nobody really knows about it. Im going to try to hand out flyers at Friday night's game, but most likely people will just throw them in the trash.

I'm excited to join the SIH crew, and can't wait to make my first post.

Greg Cohen said...

My only complaint about this start is that he once again left a mess for the pen to clean up. Hopefully Hughes can get this out.

Brian Danuff said...

Looks like Greg already had that covered.

Greg Cohen said...

HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHES

Brian Danuff said...

YES!! Philthy paints the outside corner, Yanks escape a jam.

2-1 Yankees.

daneptizl said...

Hughes was pumping 96-97 and then drops the hammer of death.

Brian Danuff said...

That was a nice pitch by Hughes.

Brian Danuff said...

However we can get it, an inscurance run this inning would be great. Too bad though. The way Doc is pitching we probably won't.

Brian Danuff said...

I know this is off topic, but have you heard about the new World Trade Center? Reportedly the opening date was pushed back yet again, this time to 2018. This is crazy.

Greg Cohen said...

YEA JD!

Anonymous said...

Yeah boy

Greg Cohen said...

YB, there is so much politics and crap involved with that project that nothing may happen for a long time. It's a shame too, those victims, fire men, cops, and rescue workers deserve a better tribute than a hole in the ground....

.... And Tex adds another. 4-1 Yanks!

Brian Danuff said...

Back to back! Belly to belly!

Solo shots from Teix and Damon, Yanks lead 4-1!!!!!!

Just what the doctor ordered.

For Damon, it was his 18th, and for Teix, his AL leading 27th of the year.

Brian Danuff said...

Tied for 1st in homers, my bad.

Anonymous said...

Wow, when Teix gets a hold of a ball they just rocket out. Best signing we've had in a while

Brian Danuff said...

Back to Ground Zero,

Yeah seriously. There's also some rumors floating around that they may rip up the current plan all together and just build new Twin Towers.

Some day we'll have a new World Trade Center, someday...

Greg Cohen said...

"Best signing we've had in a while"

I agree completely anon.

Greg Cohen said...

Garza just gave up a bomb to Dustin Pedroia, 2-0 Boston.

Greg Cohen said...

Alright, time to get Mo up.

Margo said...

let Hughes get through a tough inning for once and let Mo get the save in the 9th. Hughes has to learn how to get out of tough situations

Greg Cohen said...

They gotta win the game, that's all that matters. Believe me, I'd much rather Hughes get out of this on his own.

Greg Cohen said...

That last fastball to Millar was a thing of beauty. OK Mo, shut the door.

Brian Danuff said...

Hughes gets Millar looking, Mo coming in..

"Sleep with one eye open! Gripping your pillow tight! Exit light! Enter night!"

You get the picture.

Anonymous said...

Enter Sandman baby, lights out time

Greg Cohen said...

Shit. A better left fielder catches that ball.

Mike N. said...

Last year Dasmon gets that

Brian Danuff said...

Well for a split second I though he had it. Anyway, Mo got out of it, so it's still 4-3 Yanks.

Greg Cohen said...

True Mike.... At least he got out of it. Those two solo homers loom very large. I'd like to see a couple more this inning.

Brian Danuff said...

What makes you say that Mike? I mean, I also think that, but only because of a couple less errors he made last year compared to this year.

Brian Danuff said...

A thrilla from Godzilla!

Solo blast Matsui, Yanks now have a 5-3 lead.

Greg Cohen said...

Wow, that was quick. Matsui blasts one to deep center for another solo homer. 5-3 Yanks.

Carlos J. Gomez said...

Hey guys.. i dont like seeing Mo in there for all these 4 out saves.. need to save that arm

Brian Danuff said...

Also, is it me, or do the Blue Jays purposely run Halladay out there for the 9th no matter what? CC and A.J. could have had the same start but Joe would have pulled them out in the 8th or a bit earlier.

Anonymous said...

This is probably a late statement and I'm probably not the first to bring this up, maybe all the homers at the new stadium aren't about the stadium and maybe its the team. Im not saying the stadium doesnt help, but I mean we're mashing the ball this yer, home and away

Brian Danuff said...

Carlos,

You're right. If you don't use him tomorrow, he should be good for at least 3 if not all, of the Red Sox games.

Greg Cohen said...

Hey Carlos,

Yea I know what you mean, but I think Hughes may be on a pitch limit of some sort. That's the only reason I could see for taking him out. The Wells vs. Hughes and Wells vs. Mo matchups are surprisingly close.

Greg Cohen said...

That's true anon. I think the new stadium has added a few homers, specifically those pop flies to right that find the first or second row of the seats, but this lineup is very very good. They'll hit anywhere.

... A two-out RBI here would put this one to bed.

Brian Danuff said...

Anon,

You're absolutely right. The lineup is simply a home run machine. Teix, A-Rod, Cano, Matsui, you could go on forever, all of these hitters are capable of hitting it out of the park, weather it's in the Bronx or not.

Brian Danuff said...

We need Tampa to rally here. It's in the 7th and its 2-0 Red Sox. Having a 1.5 or 2.5 lead heading back to the Bronx is always agreat feeling.

Brian Danuff said...

Whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...

A loud out number 2. That was close.

Greg Cohen said...

Mo, please hit your spots. You're giving me a heart attack.

Brian Danuff said...

Aww come on Mo, finish this!!!

Greg Cohen said...

It's never easy, is it?

Greg Cohen said...

.... And I can breath again. Yankees win 5-3 as the Jays leave the tying runs on base. *takes deep breath*

Brian Danuff said...

BALLGAME OVER!! YANKEES WIN!! THAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!!!

Whoo-hoo! Yanks win 5-3. Thank God Mo didn't implode.

Anonymous said...

TB is rallying!

Capone said...

Too close for comfort

Greg Cohen said...

You mean like KRod just did.... lol

Greg Cohen said...

... Oh man, 1st and 2nd with two out in a 7-7 game in the 9th, and K-Rod gets a grounder to short, but Angel Berroa booted it and now the bases are loaded.

Brian Danuff said...

Hahahahahaha...

Up until like last week, I forgot the Mets signed Angel Berroa. Guess he can't handle playing in New York all together, let alone the Yanks.

Greg Cohen said...

Evan Longoria tied it.

Greg Cohen said...

And now they have runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out thanks to terrible pitching and a throwing error by Daniel Bard.

crossfire said...

roid sox lost in the bottom of the 13th on a Longoria 2 run homer.

Greg Cohen said...

Nice!

1.5 games up.
