August 30th

1905 - Making his MLB debut, Ty Cobb doubles off of Highlander's Jack Chesbro in a 5-3 Tiger victory at Detroit's Bennett Park.

1906 - Right-hander Slow Joe Doyle of the Highlanders becomes the 1st 20th century player to start out with 2 shutouts when he beats the Nationals by the score of 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories, 7 will be shutouts. He is nicknamed "Slow" because of his time-consuming pace on the mound. The Yankees take the nightcap as well, winning by the score of 9-8, to begin a sweep of 5 doubleheaders in 6 days. They'll outscore their opponents 76-31.

1906 - The Yankees 1B Hal Chase becomes the 1st franchise player to hit 3 triples in a game during a Yankee 9-8 victory over the Senators.

1910 - Yankees Tom Hughes pitches a no-hitter for 9 1/3 innings before giving up a hit to Indians' Harry Niles. Hughes then collapses, allowing 5 Tribe runs in the 11th inning to lose the game by the score of 5-0.

1917 - Former Yankees P Charles “Red” Embree (1948) was born. On December 11, 1947, Red was traded by the Indians to the Yankees for OF Allie Clark. Red went 5-3 with the Yankees before being sent to the Browns in 1948. On December 13, 1948, Red was traded by the Yankees along with C Sherm Lollar, P Richard Starr and $100,000 to the Browns for C Roy Partee and P Fred Sanford.

1918 - Former Yankees INF Billy “Bull” Johnson (1943, 1946-51) was born. (1918-2006)
Before 1936 AL Season, Billy was signed by the Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. Billy was 1947 AL All Star team member. He appeared in 4 World Series with the Yankees. Billy appeared in 735 games for the Yankees, hitting .275 with 45 HRs with 388 RBI’s. On May 14, 1951, Billy was traded by the Yankees to the Cardinals for 1B Don Bollweg and $15,000.

1922 - After hitting HR No. 28 in the 1st inning, Yankees slugger Babe Ruth argues too strongly over a called strike on his next AB, and he is thrown out of the game. He'll be suspended for the 5th time of the 1922 AL season, and is out for 3 days.

1925 - Former Yankees OF George “Teddy” Wilson (1956) was born (1925-1974). On August 22,1956, George was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the Giants. He hit .167 in 11 games and also appeared in 1 game for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series.

1931 - At Fenway Park, Ben Chapman and Lou Gehrig each have 4 hits and together total 9-RBIs as the Yankees roll over the Red Sox by the score of 14-4. One of Gehrig's hits is a HR, his 37th, and 2 of Chapman's leave the park. Hal Rhyne has 4 hits for the Red Sox.

1939 - Yankees rookie hurler Atley Donald pitches a baseball at 94.7 miles per hours to establish a new record for a fastball.

1941 - Former Yankees OF Archie Moore (1964-1965) was born. Before the 1963 AL Season, the Yankees signed Archie Moore as an MLB amateur free agent. Archie appeared in 40 games for the Yankees hitting .275.

1945 - Yankees rookie hurler Floyd Bevans, 28 years old, retires the 1st 18 Red Sox batters before giving up a walk and a double to Bob Johnson, the only hit for the Red Sox. Bevans wins the game by a score of 7-1, defeating Red Sox starter Boo Ferriss, who was trying for his 21st win of the 1945 AL season.

1956 - Former Yankees P Roger Erickson (1982-83) was born. On May 12, 1982, Roger was traded by the Twins along with C Butch Wynegar to the Yankees for P John Pacella, INF Larry Milbourne, P Pete Filson, and cash. Roger went 4-6 in 21 games for the Yankees. On December 8, 1983, Roger was traded by the Yankees along with 1B/DH Steve Balboni to the Royals for P Mike Armstrong and minor league player Duane Dewey.

1961 - Mickey Mantle connects for HR #47, off the Twins hurler Jim Kaat as the Yankees win by the score of 4-0. He'll hit HR #48 tomorrow, off of Twins hurler Jack Kralick, in the Twins, 4-3 win over the Yankees.

1967 - Former Yankees P Andy Cook (1993) was born. The Yankees in the 11th round of the 1988 MLB amateur player draft drafted Andy Cook. He appeared in 4 games for the 1993 Yankees, posting a 0-1 record. On August 31, 1993, Andy was released by the Yankees.

1972 - Yankees obtained P Casey Cox from the Rangers for P Jim Roland. A classic nothing for nothing trade.

1977 - Against the Yankees, the Mariners tie the score, 5 -5, in the 8th inning, and then lose in the 11th inning, by 6-5, when Mickey Rivers leads off the inning with a home run.

1986 - Two Veteran Yankee hurlers Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the 1st 40+ pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses his start by the score of 1-0, while Joe Niekro pitches 5 innings for a 3-0 victory over the Mariners.

1989 - The Yankees send veteran slugger DH/1B Ken Phelps, hitting just .249, to A’s for minor league P Scott Holcomb.

1989 - Former Yankees 1B/OF Joe Collins (1949-1957) passed away. Before the 1939 AL Season, the Yankees signed Joe Collins as an MLB amateur free agent. In 10 seasons with the Yankees Joe hit .256, never really living up to the hitting promise that the Yankees had hoped for. Joe appeared in 7 World Series with the Yankees. He was replaced by Bill Skowron as the regular Yankee 1st baseman in 1957. On March 20, 1958, Joe was purchased by the Phillies from the Yankees. Joe retired from MLB, turning down a $100,000 contract offer from the Phillies. He told the NYC media that he wanted to be remembered as a Yankee.

1996 - Adding their 8th new player this month, the Yankees reacquired 3B Charlie Hayes from the Pirates in exchange for a player to be named. This makes current Yankees 3B Wade Boggs, a platoon player and he angrily states, "I'll get my 3,000 MLB hits somewhere."

1997 - Yankees starter David Wells strikes a familiar note as he threatens to punch out owner George Steinbrenner during a clubhouse argument. Reportedly, the argument began after the team's 7-2 loss to the Expos, when a play occurred that was similar to last year's ALCS. This time it was against the Yankees; Darrin Fletcher's gets a HR when a fan in RF reaches over and snagged the ball before Paul O'Neill could catch it. Wells voiced to Steinbrenner that extra security should be added in RF to prevent this sort of incident, George answered that Wells ought to stick to his pitching. When Wells said that Steinbrenner could trade him, the Yankees owner answered that no one wanted the lefty. It was then that Wells joined the ranks of earlier Yankee players, who have wanted to flatten the feisty owner since 1973.

2005 - In the long tradition of the Yankees, All Star 3B Alex Rodriguez becomes only the 2nd right-handed batter in Yankees history to hit 40 HRs in a season. The Yankee's 3B joins Joe DiMaggio, who hit 46 HR s in 1937, making it the only time "Joltin' Joe" reached the 40 HR mark in his MLB career.

August 31st

1916 - Former Yankees INF Ray Mack (1947) was born. On December 6, 1946, Ray was traded by the Indians along with C Sherman Lollar to Yankees for OF Hal Peck, P Al Gettel, and P Gene Bearden. Ray appeared in 1 game for the Yankees in 1947, before being sent to the White Sox.

1925 - Yankees slugger Babe Ruth meets with Yankees team owner Jacob Ruppert and learns that the owner is 100% behind Yankees Manager Miller Huggins suspension and fining of Ruth. He announces that Ruth will remain suspend until he apologizes to Huggins, and until such time as Huggins decides to lift the player’s suspension. The $5,000 fine is the largest ever given by a MLB team to one of it’s own players, would stick. It was later refunded to Babe Ruth in 1929 after Miller Huggins death.

1929 - The Yankees open a home stand by beating the Red Sox by a score of 10-3. Babe Ruth hits HR No. 43 and leads his Yankees teammate Lou Gehrig by 2 HRs. The Yankees with an 89-37 record, they now lead the 2nd-place A's by 17 games.

1931 - Against the Senators' hurler Lloyd Brown, Lou Gehrig belts his 2nd grand slam HR in 3 days, but the Senators hang onto 2nd place in AL by beating the Yankees, by the score of 6-5.

1936 - Yankees Manager Joe McCarthy consents to Dixie Walker as a temporary substitute while the White Sox patch up Mike Kreevich, who is spiked on a play. Walker runs for Kreevich but does not replace him in the outfield.

1942 - The Yankees obtained veteran OF Roy Cullenbine from the Senators on waivers. Roy will hit .364 as part-time OF and pinch hitter for the Yankees.

1942 - Former Yankees minor league P Tom Dukes was born. Before 1962 AL season, Tom was signed by the Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. Tom never pitched for the Yankees at MLB Level. On June 16, 1965, Tom was traded by the Yankees to the Braves for veteran reliever Bobby Tiefenauer. At the time of the trade, Tom was pitching at Richmond (AAA) for the Yankees

1945 - The Senators again muff a chance to go into 1st place in the AL, by dropping a pair of games to the Yankees by the scores of 3-2 and 3-1. In between games, Nats hurler Bert Shepard receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for his military service in World War II. Shepard lost his leg in combat.

1948 - At Yankee Stadium, the Yankees score 4 runs in the 8th inning but the Browns come back with 5 runs in the 9th inning off of Yankees closer Joe Page to make it close, but the Yankees prevail to hold on to a 10-9 victory. Yankees1B Tommy Henrich has a HR and an unassisted DP to help starter Allie Reynolds to the win. The Yankees remain a game behind the Red Sox.

1953 - Former Yankees reserve INF Juan Bernhardt (1976) was born. On August 1, 1970, Juan was signed by the Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. He appeared in 10 games for the Yankees in 1976, hitting just .190. On November 5, 1976, Juan was drafted by the Mariners from the Yankees as the 20th pick in the 1976 AL player expansion draft.

1954 - The Indians beat the Yankees 6-1 to record their 26th win of the month, tying the AL mark set by the 1931 A's.

1954 - Former Yankees OF/DH Claudell Washington (1986-1988, 1990) was born. On June 30, 1986, Claudell was traded by the Braves along with minor league INF Paul Zuvella to the Yankees for OF/1B Ken Griffey Sr. and INF Andre Robertson. His best Yankees season was in 1988, when he hit .308. After the 1988 AL season, Claudell left the Yankees for free agency, signing with the Angels. On April 29, 1990, Claudell was traded by the Angels along with P Rich Monteleone to the Yankees for OF/DH Luis Polonia. He finished his 17-year MLB career with the Yankees in 1990, appearing in only 33 games, just batting .162.

1956 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower is in attendance at Griffth Stadium in Washington, D. C., as Jim Lemon of the Senators slugs 3 consecutive HRs in a night game against the Yankees, but the Yankees still win the game by a score of 6-4.

1966 - Yankees veteran AL All Star 2B Bobby Richardson (1955-1966), 31, announces his retirement as an MLB player. On June 12, 1953, Bobby was signed by the Yankees as an MLB amateur free agent. Bobby would become the Yankees regular 2B in 1959, hitting .301. He was the only Yankees regular to hit over .300 that season. He would be an AL All Star 2B in 1957, but didn’t play, he was named to the 1959, 1962-66 AL teams. He hit .307 in 7 World Series for the Yankees. With his best World Series being in 1960, winning the World Series MVP Award, after hitting .367 with 1 HR and 12 RBI’s. Bobby would hit .302 in 1962. He would lead the AL in singles in 1961-62 and 1964. Bobby led the AL in Sac hits with 20 in 1962 and 16 in 1964. Bobby won the AL Golden Glove for 2nd base from 1961-1965. In 1963, he won the MLB Lou Gehrig Memorial Award.

1977 - Yankees reliever Sparky Lyle records his 3rd win in 3 games, all won on late-inning HRs by the Bronx Bombers. Graig Nettles' 2nd HR of the game gives the Yankees, a 5-4 victory over the Mariners.

1981 - Former Yankees minor league P Ramon Ramirez was born. He was originally signed by the Rangers and was released. Then Ramon pitched in Japan. Ramirez was posted via the Posting System in February 2003 to the Yankees for a total of $300,050. In his 1st year with the Yankees' organization, he went 3-10 with a 4.43 ERA in 20 games with the A Tampa Yankees, AA Trenton Thunder, and the AAA Columbus Clippers. He was named the number 5 ranked pitcher in the Yankees organization by Baseball America that year. During Ramirez's 2nd year with the Yankees, he started out at Columbus, struggling going 0-3 with a 8.50 ERA in 4 starts, as a result, he was sent down to Trenton where he went 4-6 with a 4.62 ERA in 18 starts. He had the top K/per 9 IP ratio among all Eastern League starters that year with 10.1K/9IP. Again, Ramirez opened up the 2005 season with Columbus, but struggled again going 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 6 games. He was sent back to Trenton, where he went 6-5 with a 3.84 ERA in 15 games. The Yankees traded Ramirez to the Rockies along with minor league P Eduardo Sierra on June 28, 2005 for P Shawn Chacon. He never appeared with the Yankees at the MLB level. He is now pitching for the Red Sox this season after being acquired from the Royals in a winter 2008 trade.

1993 - The Cardinals traded veteran All Star closer Lee Smith to the Yankees in exchange for P Rich Batchelor. Smith would go 0-0 in 8 games with 3 saves for the Yankees. He left the Yankees for free agency after the 1993 AL season, signing with Eastern Division rivals, the Orioles.

1993 - Former Yankees OF Jesse Hill (1935) passed away. On January 19, 1932, Jesse was traded by Hollywood Stars (PCL) to the Yankees for OF George Quellich, P Myles Thomas and cash. Jesse Hill appeared in 107 games for the Yankees in 1935, hitting .293. On January 17, 1936, he was traded by the along with P Jimmie DeShong to the Senators for P Bump Hadley and OF Roy Johnson.

1994 - Former Yankees C Mike Garbark (1944-45) passed away. Catcher Mike Garbark was a member of the Yankees in 1944-45. He showed a lot of hustle, hitting 7 triples in 475 at-bats. His brother Bob Garbark was in the majors as a catcher at the same time and the 2 brothers each hit .261 in 1944. Mike appeared in 149 games for the Yankees, finishing with a .249 BA.

1995 - Yankees' OF Paul O'Neill homers in his 1st three at bats and drives home 8 runs in leading the Bombers to an 11-6 win over the Angels.

1997 - In front of a Yankee Stadium crowd of 55,707 fans, Don Mattingly's Yankees uniform number 23 is added to the list of retired numbers on the wall at Yankee Stadium's Monument Park.

September 1st

1903 - Former Yankees P Foster “Eddie” Edwards (1930) was born. Eddie was 0-0 in 2 games for the Yankees in 1930.

1905 - Yankees sell P Jack Powell (1903-04) to the Browns for cash. Powell had won 23 games in 1903, before slipping to 8-13 mark in 1904.

1906 - The Highlanders win their 6th game in 3 days from Washington‚ sweeping their third straight doubleheader‚ 5-4 and 5-3‚ for an AL record. Three days later‚ they will move into 1st place‚ sweeping the Red Sox by scores of 7-0 and 1-0 for their 5th straight doubleheader sweep‚ a MLB record.

1920 - The Yankees submarine hurler Carl Mays shuts out the Browns by the score of 3-0 on 4 hits for the Yankees.

1927 - Former Yankees MLB pitching coach Cloyd Boyer was born. He was the oldest of the 3-Boyer brothers to play in the MLB. Boyer was a coach for the Richmond Virginians (AAA) in 1962. He was the Yankees minor league pitching coach in 1963-1964,1974-1976. Boyer scouted for the Yankees from 1964 to 1974, and replaced minor league managers in mid-season in 1962,1963 and 1968. He was a MLB pitching coach for the Yankees in 1977.

1928 - In Washington, D.C. at Griffith Stadium‚ Republican presidential candidate Herbert Hoover looks on as "Approximately 99 % of the spectators wore their straw hats‚ hoping the Senators would give them a chance to get excited and hurl them away" (NY Times). Alas‚ the Yankees win the game by a score of 8-3. Yankees starter Waite Hoyt is the winner and beneficiary of Bob Meusel's 4-for-4 hitting. Meusel has 3 RBIs for the Yankees. Garland Braxton takes the loss for the Senators.

1930 - A Labor Day crowd of 72‚000 fans packs Yankee Stadium to see the World Champion A's split a double header with the Yankees. The A's take the opener‚ by the score of 3-2‚ with reliever Lefty Grove striking out Yankees slugger Babe Ruth with 2 men on to end the game. Babe Ruth drives in a run in the nightcap for a 2-0 Yankees win. Yankees starter Red Ruffing pitches his 2nd 2-hitter in 2 weeks to beat A’s starter George Earnshaw.

1931 - Yankees 1B Lou Gehrig hits his 3rd grand slam HR in 5 days and his 6th HR in consecutive games when he connects in a 5-1 2nd-game win over the Red Sox. The blast‚ his 40th HR of the year‚ comes in the 3rd inning off of Ed Morris. Gehrig connects in the opener’s 11-3 win against Milt Gaston‚ belting his 39th HR in the 7th inning. Lou finishes the day with 6 RBI's. Lou has knocked in 21 runs in the past 6 games. With the A's losing to the Senators‚ Yankees are a half-game out of 2nd place.

1944 - Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Senators start semi-pro pitcher Jug Thesenga‚ who holds the Yankees scoreless for 5 innings before the roof caves in, but the Senators rally to win the game by a score of 10-7‚ behind Nats’ reliever Roger Wolff‚ who snaps his personal 11-game losing streak.

1953 - White Sox hurler Virgil Trucks surrenders a HR to Mickey Mantle in the 7th inning that proves to be the game-winner‚ as the White Sox lose to the Yankees by a score of 3-2.

1957 - The Yankees obtained veteran NL hurler Sal “The Barber” Maglie from the Dodgers for $25,000 cash and 2 minor league players, but he is ineligible for 1957 World Series play. Sal will go 2-0 with 4 saves in September of 1957, before being sent to the Cardinals during the 1958 MLB season, when he was 1-1, in 7 games with Yankees. Sal becomes last of MLB players for play for all 3 MLB teams in New York City, the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers.

1961 - The AL's biggest crowd of the year‚ 65‚566 fans‚ see lefty veteran starters Whitey Ford and Don Mossi duel at Yankee Stadium as a weekend battle for AL 1st place begins. A 2-out‚ 9th inning hits by Elston Howard‚ Yogi Berra‚ and Bill Skowron give the Yankees, a 1-0 win over the Tigers.

1963 - Yankees CF Tom Tresh joins teammate Mickey Mantle among the 4 AL and 5 NL players to hit HRs left- and right-handed in 1 game. The Yankees beat the Orioles by the score of 5-4. A tired Mickey Mantle‚ who had been out partying the night before‚ adds a pinch HR in the 8th inning‚ jumping on the 1st pitch from Orioles veteran hurler Mike McCormick.

1972 - Yankees Ace starter Mel Stottlemyre hurls a 4-hitter to stop the White Sox by the score of 4-0. Yankees Rookie OF Charlie Spikes has 2 hits in his MLB debut‚ drives in a run and saves a run with a sparkling catch in right field.

1986 - The A's rookie Jose Canseco goes 4-for-5 and hits his 28th HR to become the 1st ML player with 100 RBI this season. The A’s defeat the Yankees by the score of 9-8.

1990 - The 3rd inside-the-park grand slam HR of the 1990 AL season is hit by Boston's Mike Greenwell off of Yankees hurler Greg Cadaret‚ as the Red Sox beat visiting Yankees at Fenway Park by the score of 15-1. Greenwell's grounder eludes Yankees OF Jesse Barfield in the RF corner: Barfield's shoe-top miss on August 14th gave Luis Polonia his slam. The last MLB season with 3 inside-the-park slams was in 1947. Mike Greenwell's only other inside-the-park slam was also off of Cadaret‚ in 1989 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox batters jump on Yankees starter Andy Hawkins who lasted 1/3 of an inning. Hawkins has now pitched a total of one inning in 3 starts at Fenway Park and given up 18 runs (ERA 162.00).

1997 - Before 50‚869 fans at the Veterans Stadium‚ the Phillies defeat the Yankees by the score of 5-1‚ behind starter Curt Schilling‚ who fans 16 Yankee batters in 8 innings of action‚ and does not walk a man. The Phillies will win the next day to sweep the series with the defending 1996 World Champs.

September 2nd

1908 - Former All Star Yankees P Monte Pearson (1936-1940) was born (1909-1978). Monte was acquired by the Yankees in trade that sent P Johnny Allen to the Indians in 1935. Monte pitched the 1st no-hitter at Yankee Stadium. He pitched for the Yankees from 1936-1940. His best Yankees season was in 1936, when he went 19-7 and made the AL All star team. He appeared in the 1936-1939 World Series with the Yankees going 4-4. His Yankee pitching career record was 63-27. He was sold to the Reds in 1940.

1912 - In a rainy doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, Red Sox ace Joe Wood tops the Yankees in the nightcap, by the score of 1-0, for his 30th win and his 13th straight victory. It is Wood's 8th shutout and 2nd in a row. The Red Sox takes the opening game, by the score of 2-1 to finish the year in New York with 10 wins in 10 tries. With 3 wins last year, and 5 wins in their 1st 5 road games with New York in 1913, the Red Sox ties the MLB record for most consecutive wins on the road against one team (18).

1922 - Yankees starter Carl Mays wins his AL record 23rd straight game over the A’s. Although the A’s knock him out of the box for the 1st time in his win streak, he leaves with 1-out in the 6th inning with the Yankees winning, by the score of 7-2. The Yankees prevail to win the game, by the score of 11-6, in game 1, but the A's win the nightcap by the score of 4-0, behind starter Bob Hasty.

1928 - The Senators top the Yankees, by a score of 2-0, as starter Fred Marberry does it all, shutting down the Yankees and driving in both Nats runs. Yankees OF Bob Meusel's hitting streak is stopped at 6 straight games. The Yankees lead is now 1-1/2 games over the A's, winners of an exhibition game in Lycoming, PA.

1932 - The Yankees keep their scoring streak alive by scoring in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Senators, by the score of 1-0. Lou Gehrig triples off of P Firpo Marberry to score Babe Ruth for the winning run.

1933 - Former Yankee 1B/OF Marvin “Marvelous Marv” Throneberry (1955, 1958-59) was born (1933-1994). Marvin was signed as a MLB free agent by the Yankees in 1952. He appeared in 1 game in 1955 for the Yankees. He would win a triple crown while playing with the Yankees Denver Bears AAA farm club under Manager Ralph Houk. He would hit 118 HRs in 3 years with the Bears. He made the American Association All Star team. He joined the Yankees in 1958, as a back up to 1B Bill Skowron. He appeared in 1 game of the 1958 World Series against the Braves. During the 1959 AL season, he had a chance to play 1B on a regular basis, when Bill Skowron broke his arm. Marv hit .240 with 8 HRs and 22 RBI’s. Like the other younger players on the Yankees (Lumpe, Richardson, Siebern and others) Marv was verbally abused by Yankees Manager Casey Stengel, who picked on the young Yankee players that AL season. Marv was packaged in the Roger Maris trade with the A’s in December of 1959. He later played for the Orioles, before finishing up with the Mets, finishing with a MLB career BA of .237. He later appeared in the great Miller Beer commercials of the 1980’s. His brother Faye played the OF in AL for several teams during the 1950-1960’s, making them one of many brother combos of that baseball era.

1952 - Yankee hurlers Tom Gorman and Ewell “The Whip” Blackwell shut out the Red Sox by the scores of 5-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader.

1955 - Yankee teammates Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle celebrate Billy Martin's return from active duty in the US Army. Whitey Ford throws 6 innings of no-hit ball against the Senators before Carlos Paula spoils it in the 7th inning with Nats's only hit. The Yankees win the game by the score of 4-2, as Mantle hits his 36th HR, a 3-run shot. Mantle is 10 HRs ahead of his AL rivals Tigers’ Al Kaline and Red Sox Ted Williams. Yankees stay a half game behind the White Sox, who beat the 3rd-place Indians. Billy Martin will hit .300 in September; the Yankees will go on a 17-6 tear to win the 1955 AL pennant by 3 games.

1958 - At Yankee Stadium, Yankees snaps a scoreless tie with Red Sox, when Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle crash back-to-back 6th inning HRs off of P Dave Sisler. 1960 - Former Yankees reserve INF Rex Hudler (1984-85) was born. Rex was a 1st round draft pick by the Yankees in 1978. He played in 29 games for the Yankees in 1984-1985, before being traded along with P Rich Bordi to the Orioles for OF Gary Ward and a player to be named later.

1961 - Against the Tiger's Yankees Killer starter Frank Lary, Roger Maris doubles and takes 3B on a misplay. Mickey Mantle, hurting from a pulled muscle in his forearm, lays down a perfect drag bunt to score Roger. Maris then blasts HRs in his next 2-trips to the plate, and Elston Howard adds a 3-run HR for a 7-2 win over the Tigers.

1965 - Mickey Mantle hits a 1st inning HR with 2-runners on as the Yankees score 5 runs on their way to an 8-1 win over the Angels. Yankees veteran All Star starter Whitey Ford is the winner.

1967 - The Senator's Bob Priddy loses his 1-0 lead to the Yankees; when Mickey Mantle clouts a 2-run pinch-hit HR in the 8th inning as the Yankees win by the score of 2-1. Yankees starter, Mel Stottlemyre is the winner, allowing only 6-hits and no walks. For Mickey Mantle, it is his 14th game-winning hit of the 1967 AL season, 8 of them were HRs.

1969 - Yankees Manager Ralph Houk signs a new 3-year contract with the team at $65,000 a season, the highest managerial salary in either major league. Yankees veteran All Star 1B Joe Pepitone is reinstated to the team.

1978 - Yankees starter Ed Figueroa wins his 14th game of the season. Reggie Jackson and Chris Chambliss each hit a HR, as the Yankees dump the Mariners by the score of 6-2. The victory moves the Yankees within 5 1/2 games of the 1st place Red Sox in the AL East. Reggie Jackson’s 20th HR makes him the 19th player in MLB history to hit 20 or more HRs for 11 straight seasons.

1996 - Yankees starter David Cone makes a dramatic return to the mound after his May operation to remove an aneurysm in his pitching arm, by pitching 7 no-hit innings. The Yankees beat the A's by the score of 5-0, as Mariano Rivera goes 2-innings of relief, gives up 1-hit to Jose Herrera in the 8th inning. David Cone's remarkable return sends veteran hurler Kenny Rogers to the bullpen.

2001 - The Yankees defeat the Red Sox by the score of 1-0, as starter Mike Mussina comes within a strike of hurling a perfect game. Red Sox PH Carl Everett's 2-out, 2-strike single in the 9th inning ruins Mussina's gem. It is the 3rd time in his MLB career that the “Moose” has taken a perfect game into the 8th inning. The Yankees score the only run of the contest in the top of the 9th inning on Enrique Wilson's double. Opposing Red Sox hurler David Cone, former Yankee, who takes the loss, is the most recent pitcher to toss a perfect game. The Yankees sweep of the Red Sox was the 1st history by a team that did not score in the 1st 7-innings of any of the games. In a move that enrages many players, Red Sox GM Dan Duquette abruptly relieves P coach John Cumberland of his duties just minutes after the game. A visibly angry Cumberland, who was promoted from bullpen coach to pitching coach last month, when Joe Kerrigan became manager, said Duquette told him he was being reassigned to the team's training facility in Fort Myers, Fla.” I'm not going,” Cumberland said. “That's official, that's for da#m*n sure. That's OK. We've had a lot of good people leave this organization, and now it's going to be me because I'm not going to be reassigned.”

September 3rd

1906 - Yankees Kid Elberfeld, the hotheaded, “Tabasco Kid,” assaults Umpire Silk O'Loughlin. He is forcibly removed by NYC police in the 1st game of a doubleheader; a New York's 4-3 win over the A’s. In the 2nd game, Yankees base runner Willie Keeler collides with Shortstop Lave Cross trying to field a ground ball, and 2-runs score. O'Loughlin sees no interference, a call so hotly disputed by A's captain Harry Davis that, after 8-minutes of arguing, the umpire forfeits the game to Yankees. For New York, it is a MLB record 5th straight doubleheader sweep in 5 consecutive days.

1921 - Powered by Babe Ruth's 50th HR and the pitching of starter Carl Mays, the Yankees down the Senators by the score of 9–3 at Griffith Stadium.

1927 - The A’s starter Lefty Grove pitches his only shutout of the 1927 AL season beating the Yankees by the score of 1-0.

1934 - Labor Day doubleheaders define the standings for the final AL pennant surge. Tigers, are rained out in Chicago, hold a 5-game lead over the Yankees, who split a pair with the A's. Yankees starter Lefty Gomez wins his 24th game of the season and 10th straight game in the opener, and the A’s slugger Jimmy Foxx hits his 40th HR of the 1934 AL season in the nightcap.

1939 - When Babe Dahlgren strikes out while being given an intentional walk and George Selkirk and Joe Gordon try to steal home on successive pitches by trotting to the plate, Red Sox fans throw a barrage of garbage onto playing field at Fenway Park to protest the Yankees making deliberate outs to take advantage of the 6:30 PM Sunday curfew. Umpire Cal Hubbard rules the Fenway Park crowd's action makes it impossible to continue the game and awards the game as a forfeit to the Yankees with a 9-0 “official” score, but AL President Will Harridge subsequently overrules him and fines the Yankees for their tactics.

1947 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Tommy Henrich and Joe DiMaggio lead the way with 4-hits each as the Yankees bang out a total of 18-hits, all singles in defeating the Red Sox by a score of
11-2.

1951 - Newly acquired hurler Johnny Sain from the Braves, tosses a 5-hitter to beat the A's by the score of 3-1. The A's top the Yankees in the 2nd game, winning by the score of 3- 2.

1952 - The A’s starter Harry Byrd, 1-hits the Yankees winning by the score of 3-0.

1954 - The Yankees snap Tribe starter Bob Lemon's 11-game win streak to beat the Indians by the score of 3-2 and move 3 ½ games from 1st place. Mickey Mantle's gigantic blast into the RF upper deck in the 6th inning started the Yankees scoring.

1954 - The Yankee purchased veteran P Tommy Byrne from Seattle (PCL) for an undisclosed amount of cash and other considerations. He will go 16-5 in 1955 for the Yankees. Tommy will end his Yankees pitching career with a 72-40 mark (1940, 1946-1951, 1954-1957).

1958 - The Yankees spot the Red Sox, a 5-3 lead before Mickey Mantle HRs in the 8th inning. Then Yogi Berra cracks a 3-run HR in the 9th inning to win it by a score of 8-5. Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, each have 85 RBIs for the 1958 AL season.

1960 - The Orioles hand the Yankees a 2nd straight shut out loss, winning by the score of 2-0 and replacing the Yankees in 1st place in the AL by a game. Brooks Robinson has both RBIs to back Orioles starter Jack Fisher's 7-hitter. During the game at Memorial Stadium, home plate Umpire Larry Napp is struck 3-times by foul balls. Charley Berry finishes the game behind the plate, as Larry Napp is carried off the field.

1961 - After taking the 1st of 2 games against the Tigers, Yankees are down by the score of 5-4 in the 9th inning, when Mickey Mantle ties the game with his 2nd HR of the day. Elston Howard wins it with a 3-run HR drive into the LF stands and the Tigers leave town 4 1/2 games in back of the Yankees. Mickey Mantle is now at 50 HR mark, while teammate Roger Maris is at 53 HR mark, they are 1st teammates in MLB history to hit 50 HRs in the same MLB season.

1963 - Former Yankees P Eric Plunk (1989-91) was born. The Yankees drafted Eric in 1981 in 4th round of the MLB amateur player. He was traded to the A’s in 1984 along with pitchers Tim Birtas, Jay Howell, Jose Rojo and OF Stan Javier for A’s All Star OF Rickey Henderson, Bert Bradley and cash. He returned to the Yankees in 1989 from the A’s along with P Greg Cadaret, OF Louis Polonia for Yankees OF Rickey Henderson. Eric went 15-13 for the Yankees.

1970 - Former Yankee INF Craig Wilson (2006) was born. Craig was obtained from Pirates for P Shaun Chacon during the 2006 AL season.

1973 - After 11 years at the helm of the Yankees (944-806 .539), long-time Manager Ralph Houk resigns as the Yankees skipper. The 'Major' will manage the Tigers next season.

1978 - In the greatest relief performance of the year, flame-thrower Rich Gossage enters the game in the top of 9th inning with the Mariners runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, with the Yankees clinging to a 4-3 lead. Gossage proceeds to throw 11 pitches and strikeouts the side. The win enabled the Yankees to keep pace with the 1st place Red Sox, 5 1/2 games out of 1st place in the AL East.

1988 - Closer Dennis Eckersley sets an A's team record with his 37th save of the 1988 AL season in Oakland's 5-4 win over the Yankees. Eckersley will save 45 games this season, 1 shy of Yankees closer Dave Righetti's MLB record.

1990 - Former Yankees reliever Marshall “Sheriff” Bridges (1962-1963) passed away (1931-1990). Marshall was a former Negro League star, who was signed by the Giants in 1953. The Yankees obtained Marshall from the Reds in the fall of 1961 for reserve C Jesse Gonder. He went 8-2 in 52 games with 18 saves in 1962. He appeared in 1962 World Series against the Giants, allowing the 1st grand slam HR ever hit to a NL player in a World Series, Giants 2B Chuck Hiller. In November of 1963, he was sold to the Senators.

1990 - White Sox Closer Bobby Thigpen sets a MLB record with his 47th save as Chicago defeats the Royals by the score of 4-2. The White Sox reliever breaks the Yankees Dave Righetti's closer mark of 46 saves established in 1986.

1995 - The Yankees drop a 10-9 decision to the A’s as shortstop Tony Fernandez hits for the cycle. Fernandez scores 3-runs and has 3 RBI’s for Yankees. The last Yankee player to hit for the cycle was Bobby Murcer.

2001 - At the Sky Dome, the Yankees beat the Blue Jays by the score of 7-5 by scoring 2 runs off of reliever Billy Koch in the 9th inning. Mendoza picks up his 6th save while Mark Wohlers gets his 1st victory of the 2001 AL season. The Yankees hit 5 doubles during the game.

2008 - Instant replay is used for the 1st time in a MLB game. Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez homers to left off of Rays closer Troy Percival in the 9th inning as part of an 8-4 Yankees victory. AL Umpire Brian Runge calls it a HR and has his call upheld upon review.

September 4th

1905 - The Highlanders win their 5th doubleheader in a row-a record-as they tally a double shutout of the Red Sox by scores of 7-0 and 1-0. Their win streak will go through September 8th and will stretch to 15 victories, propelling Highlanders to a 1-1/2 game lead in the AL.

1908 - In New York City, Senators Ace Walter Johnson opens a series against the Yankees by beating veteran Yankees starter Jack Chesbro by the score of 3-0, allowing 6-hits in the Senator win.

1916 - At the Polo Grounds in New York City, the Yankees and Red Sox split a doubleheader. Red Sox win the opener by the score of 7-1, behind lefty starter Babe Ruth, while the Yankees score in the 9th inning to win the nightcap to win the game by a score of 4-3.

1918 - The Yankees split a pair with the Red Sox, losing 4-2 to lefty starter Babe Ruth in the opener, and then beating Carl Mays by the score of 7-3. Babe Ruth allows no hits until the 6th inning, then just allows 5-hits overall in the game.

1920 - At Fenway Park, 33,000 fans are on hand for a doubleheader and to see Babe Ruth’s return to the Yankees lineup. The Babe hits his 45th HR in the opener to give the Yankees, a 5-3 win. In the 2nd game, Yankees starter Carl Mays pitches to a mixture of boos and cheers. Carl Mays takes a 5-3 lead into the 9th inning, and then he fails to back up home on a play at the plate. A loose ball allows Joe Bush to score the winning run and the Red Sox win the game by the score of 6-5.

1922 - At the start of the day, both New York teams (Yankees and Giants) are on top, and both Boston teams (Red Sox and Braves) are on the bottom of their league standings. But today, the Red Sox will take 2 and knock the AL leaders off their perch as they sweep the Yankees, by scores of 4-3 and 6-5. Yankees slugger Babe Ruth hits his last regular season HR in the Polo Grounds. He gets it off of veteran P Herb Pennock, who also gave up Babe Ruth's 1st Yankee homer, also at the Polo Grounds.

1923 - Yankees starter Sam Jones no-hits the A’s by the score of 2-0, beating Bob Hasty. Babe Ruth makes the only strikeout of the game, as he slips a point behind Tigers Harry Heilmann in the AL batting race. Not till Ken Holtzman's no-hitter in 1969, will another pitcher record a no-hitter with no strikeouts.

1923 - In a twilight charity game, Babe Ruth plays 1B for Philadelphia's Ascension Catholic Club. Ruth scores the only run in a 2-1 loss to the Lit Brothers.

1939 - After Labor Day MLB games are finished, the Reds lead the Cards by 4 games in the NL. Meanwhile in the AL, the Yankees are 14 1/2 ahead.

1941 - The Yankees beat the Red Sox by the score of 6-3 to clinch the 1941 AL pennant, the earliest date in MLB history. The Yankees need only 136 games, giving them a 91-45 record.

1945 - Long-time Yankees batting practice P Paul Schreiber, who last pitched in the MLB in 1923 and the minors in 1931, relieves for the Yankees against the Tigers in a rout. Schreiber gives no hits in 3 ½ innings, but Tigers starter Dizzy Trout wins the game by a score of 10-0.

1946 - Former Yankees P Ken Wright (1974) was born. The Yankees obtained Ken from the Royals along with OF Lou Piniella for Yankees veteran P Lindy McDaniel. Ken went 0-0 in 3 games in 1974 for the Yankees.

1950 - Former Yankees P Doyle Alexander (1976, 1983) was born. The Yankees in a major trade with the Orioles acquired Doyle during the 1976 AL season. Yankees sent P Rudy May, P Tippy Martinez, P Dave Pagan, P Scott McGregor and C Rick Dempsey for Orioles P Doyle Alexander, P Grant Jackson, P Ken Holtzman and reserve C Elrod Hendricks. He went 10-5 for the Yankees in 1976. He appeared in 1 in game of the 1976 World Series, losing to the Reds. He left the Yankees for free agency in the winter of 1976. The Yankees re-obtained him in 1983 from the Giants for P Andy McGaffigan and OF Ted Wilborn. The Yankees released him in May of 1983, after he went 0-2.

1955 - Mickey Mantle's 1st-inning 3-run HR allows Yankees starter Bob Turley to coast to an 8-3 win over the Senators. This is Mantle's last HR of the 1955 AL season.

1960 - After 30 straight scoreless inning the Yankees finally score but the Orioles extend their win streak to 7 by topping the Yankees again by the score of 6-2. With 2-outs in the 7th inning, Yankees 1B Bill “Moose” Skowron singles to break up Chuck Estrada's no-hitter, but veteran closer Hoyt Wilhelm, in relief, preserves the win for the Birds.

1961 - Yankee CF Mickey Mantle misses the Labor Day doubleheader with a painful and swollen forearm, but the Yankees don't need him as they sweep a pair from the Senators, by scores of 5-3 and 3-2. The sweep moves the Yankees 6-games up on the slumping Tigers, who lose by the score of 6-3 to the Orioles and trail 4-1 in a game suspended. Mickey Mantle's replacement John Blanchard breaks a 3-3 tie in the opener with an 8th inning HR.

1964 - The Yankees overcome 2-HRs by Ken Harrelson to beat the host A's, by the score of 9-7, in 10 innings. Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard hit back-to-back HRs in the 4th inning for the Bronx Bombers. With the Orioles losing today, Orioles are now (81-54) and the White Sox (82-55) are virtually tied for 1st place, with the Yankees (77-56) in 2nd place, 3 games back.

1965 - At Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox sweep 2 games from the Yankees, winning by scores of 1-0 and 7-2. Mickey Mantle's HR in the 2nd game, off of Red Sox starter Dennis Bennett is the only bright spot for the Yankees.

1972 - The Yankees split a doubleheader with the Orioles, losing 4-3 before winning 5-2. The split leaves the Yankees (69-61) in 4th place, just one-half game out of 1st place. The Orioles (69-60) are tied with the Tigers for the AL East lead. Andy Etchebarren's 3-run HR in the 1st game, off of Fritz Peterson is the big blow, while the Yankees take the 2nd game behind the 3-hits, including a HR by Bobby Murcer.

1977 - Yankees southpaw Don Gullet comes of DL, hurls his 1st AL shutout, a 4-0 victory of the Twins. Cliff Johnson’s 1st inning grand slam HR accounted for all of the scoring. The victory allowed the Yankees to have a 4 1/2 game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East.

1978 - Behind Ron Guidry's 20th win, the Yankees take the 1st game against the Tigers by the score of 9-1. The Yankees score 8-runs in the 7th inning. The Tigers win the 2nd game by the score of 5-4 to keep the Yankees, 5 games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.

1991 - Lou Gehrig's 1938 Yankees road uniform brings $220,000 at a memorabilia auction in San Francisco, becoming the most expensive non-card sports memorabilia item ever sold. A Honus Wagner baseball card goes for $125,500, while an autographed Lou Gehrig bat sells for $47,500.

1991 - Removing an asterisk which really never existed, the Statistical Accuracy Committee decides to put Roger Maris '61 HR season ahead of Babe Ruth's 60 HR mark instead of listing it separately as it was from 1962 until 1991. Regarding the expunging of the asterisk, historian Bill Deane later points out, "It was an easy job: the asterisk never existed. Roger Maris' record was, from 1962 until 1991, listed separately from Babe Ruth's and was never actually defined by 'some distinctive mark.”

1992 - Yankees OF Roberto Kelly ties a MLB record by reaching base on catcher's interference for the 7th time this 1992 AL season. The Pirates Dale Berra set the MLB mark in 1983. Rangers C Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez is the latest victim of Kelly in during a Yankees 6-3 victory over the Rangers.

1993 - Yankees starter Jim Abbott no-hits the Indians at Yankee Stadium, by a score of 4-0. The Flint, Michigan native, who was born without a right hand, becomes the 1st Yankee hurler in a decade to throw a no-hitter. The last no-hitter was by Yankee starter Dave Righetti in 1983.

1996 - Former Yankees 1B Babe Dahlgren, the man who replaced Lou Gehrig at 1B to end the MLB consecutive games played streak in June of 1939, dies in Arcadia, California. In the 1939 game, Babe goes 2-for-4, including hitting a HR, in a 22-2 victory over the Tigers at Briggs Stadium.

1996 - Yankees starter Andy Pettitte wins his 20th game of the 1996 AL season, as the Yankees defeat the A's by a score of 10-3. Yankee hitters, Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez hit solo HRs in the 4th inning. The Yankees last 20-game winner was Ron Guidry in 1985.

1998 - The Yankees (100-38) win their 100th game of the AL season, defeating the White Sox by a score of 11-6. It is the earliest any AL team has ever reached the 100-win mark. The 1906 Cubs needed 132 games to reach the 100-win mark. Bernie Williams leads the Yankees with a pair of HRs and 4-RBIs. The Yankees’ 100th win beating the 1906 Cubs and 1954 Indians mark by 5 days.

2001 - The Blue Jays roll over the sleep walking Yankees, by the score of 14-0. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte lasts just 3 innings in losing to Jays’ starter Chris Carpenter, who goes the distance allowing only 6-hits, while striking out 11 Yankee batters.

September 5th

1872 - Former Yankees P Al Orth (1904-1909) was born (1872-1948). Al went 72-73 with the Yankees after being traded by the Senators in 1904. His best Yankees season was in 1906, when he posted a 27-17 mark, leading the AL pitchers in wins. In 1905, he went 18-16 for the Yankees.

1908 - Senators starter, Walter "The Big Train" Johnson tops the Highlanders by the score of 6-0, as the Yankees manage just only 4 hits of the Nat’s ace.

1911 - Former Yankees 1B John “Buddy” Hassett (1942) was born (1911-1997). John was originally signed by the Yankees, but was traded to the Dodgers in 1936. He has re-obtained by the Yankees from the Braves in 1941, in the Tommy Holmes trade. He was the regular Yankees 1B, playing in 132 games with a .284 BA, 5 HRs with 48 RBI’s. He went into the military service in 1942. He was released by in the Yankees in May of 1946.

1920 - Former Yankees minor league P Gene Bearden was born. During June of 1942, Gene was sent from Savannah (South Atlantic) to the Yankees in an unknown transaction. Gene served in the Navy during WWII. He never pitched for the Yankees at the MLB level. On December 6,1946, Gene was traded by the Yankees along with P Al Gettel and OF Hal Peck to the Indians for C Sherm Lollar and INF Ray Mack.

1921 - The Senators veteran starter Walter “Big Train” Johnson breaks Cy Young's strike out record as he fans 7-Yankees batters for a MLB career total of 2,287.

1926 - At Baltimore, the minor league team, Baltimore Orioles (IL) embarrassed the Yankees by the score of 18-9 in an exhibition game. Yankees slugger Babe Ruth is 0-for-5 and tangles with INF Mark Koenig in the Yankees dugout after the 8th inning. Ruth yells at Koenig of loafing on several plays.

1927 - The Red Sox edge the Yankees by the score of 12-11, in an 18-inning battle during the 1st game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park, Red Ruffing, a future Yankee, pitched 15 innings for Red Sox and got no decision, but he made a permanent impression on Yankees front office. The Yankees won the 2nd game with a 5-0 shutout.

1936 - On a day the Yankees would just as soon forget. The Yankees drop a 3-2 decision to the Red Sox in the 1st game of a doubleheader. Then they throw away the 2nd game by allowing the Red Sox to come-behind and tie the score in time for darkness to end it at 7-7 tie. Adding to their 2nd game woes were 2 errors apiece for CF Joe DiMaggio and C Bill Dickey, and a triple plays against the Yankees.

1950 - Purdue University Athletic Director Red Mackey criticizes the Yankees for signing his 19-year-old baseball star P/SS Bill Skowron, who was also expected to be the starting right halfback on the Boilermakers' 1950 Big 10 football squad.

1950 - The Yankees acquired veteran 1B Johnny Hopp, who is 2nd in the NL in hitting with a .340 mark from the Pirates for an undisclosed amount of cash. The Yankees believe that Hopp will provide late season pennant insurance. Johnny will hit .333 for the month of September of 1950.

1952 - The Yankees re-signed former veteran OF Charlie “King Kong” Keller, after his release from the Tigers.

1952 - Yankees Manager Casey Stengel makes his famous “bus ride speech” to his “loafing Yankees.” The team had just dropped 2 out of 3 games to the hapless the A’s (normally easy prey), while their AL rivals Indians were on a hot streak, and the result was the possibility that the 1st place Indians might break the AL race open. Fortunately, the Old Professor’s speech had the right effect on the Yankee players, who went on to win 15 of their next 18 games.

1955 - Former Yankees hurler and minor league pitching coach Gil Patterson (1977) was born. Gil was a 1st round 7th pick by the Yankees in the 1975 MLB amateur player draft. He appeared in 10 games for the Yankees in 1977, going 1-2. His MLB pitching career was ended by arm injuries, Gil had 8 operations. He began his career in fine form in the 1975 New York-Penn League, going 8-4 with a 1.95 ERA for the Oneonta Yankees. He was 3rd in the league in wins, 4th in ERA and his 97 strikeouts (in 106 innings) led the NY-P. In '76, Gil moved up to the West Haven Yankees. In AA, he was 9-2 with a 2.07 ERA and allowed only 67 hits in 100 innings, throwing the Eastern League's only no-hitter of the season, on June 28 against the Williamsport Tomahawks. Had he qualified, he would have been 4th in the league in ERA. Gil was promoted to the Syracuse Chiefs; Patterson was 7-2 with a 2.92 ERA and completed 6 of 10 starts. He was 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA for the Chiefs in '77 mixed in with his season in the majors. He tried to come back in the low minors in the early 1980's, even trying to learn to pitch left-handed. The comeback started on a strong note, as he was 5-2 with a 1.58 ERA for the 1980 GCL Yankees, finishing 4th in the Gulf Coast League in ERA. He was 1-4 with a 3.20 ERA for the '81 Fort Lauderdale Yankees and then 1-1, 1.33 ERA for the 1982 Fresno Giants to complete his comeback bid. He was 33-16 in his minor league career. He took a job parking cars at a restaurant that George Steinbrenner went to, and Steinbrenner offered him a job as a coach.

He began coaching in 1984 with the Oneonta Yankees, but was fired after the season for refusing to let Al Leiter pitch with a sore arm. He moved in 1991 to the A’s organization. He was the pitching coach for the Madison Muskies in 1992-1993 and the West Michigan Whitecaps in 1994. In 1996, he was the roving minor league instructor. He joined the Diamondbacks organization as minor league pitching coordinator from 1997 to 2000. In 2001, he got a job with the Blue Jays as the bullpen coach (2001) and then as pitching coach (2002-2004). In 2005, he was a coach for the Columbus Clippers (AAA) and in 2006 with the GCL Yankees. "He's one of the best pitching coaches anywhere, because he knows how hard pitching is, and he knows what a pitcher goes through to get to the big leagues." – Former Yankee pitcher Al Leiter, speaking about Gil Patterson. He is the current pitching coach for the Trenton Thunder (AA) in the Yankees organization.

1960 - Former Yankees minor league P Tim Birtsas was born. The Yankees signed Tim in 1984 as 2nd round MLB amateur player draft pick. He never appeared in a MLB game for the Yankees. He was traded to the A’s in 1984 as part of the Yankees player package for A’s All-Star OF Rickey Henderson.

1961 - The Yankees top the expansion Senators by the score of 6-1, sending the Nats to their 20th defeat in their last 21 games. Mickey Mantle's HRs for his 51st of the 1961 season. The Yankees win, coupled with a Tigers doubleheader loss, puts the Yankees ahead by 7 1/2 games in AL.

1964 - The Yankees acquired veteran reliever Pedro Ramos from the Indians as pennant insurance. The Indians get 2 players to be named later: P Ralph Terry on October 12th, and P Bud Daley on November 27th. Ramos will help the Yankees win the AL Flag, but will be unable to appear in the 1964 World Series against the Cardinals. Letting go Ralph Terry will be a mistake; he will win 18 games for the Indians in 1965. Bud Daley was washed up; he had never fully recovered from his pitching arm injuries.

1964 - The A’s hurler Blue Moon Odom makes his MLB pitching debut, as Mickey Mantle greets him with a 3-run opposite field HR in the 1st inning. The Yankees hang on to win, again beating the A’s by a 9-7 score.

1971 - The Tigers tie a MLB record by using 6 pinch hitters in the 7th inning, but still lose 6-5 to the Yankees anyway.

1975 - Former Yankees P Randy Choate (2000-2003) was born. He was a 5th round draft pick by the Yankees in 1991 MLB amateur player draft. Randy went 3-2 in 77 games for the Yankees, before being traded in the winter of 2003 to the Expos as part of the Javier Vaquez deal. Randy is currently with the Rays, working out of their bullpen.

1977 - The Indians break an 18-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader from the Yankees by the scores of 4-3 and 5-4. The Indians stage their 1st “Hate The Yankees Hanky Night”, which increases the team’s game attendance to 28,184 fans, triple of the normal Indian home game attendance.

1978 - The Yankees win 4-2 over the Tigers, bringing the team within 4 games of 1st place Red Sox in the AL East.

1989 - Deion Sanders, the 5th player selected overall in the 1989 NFL Draft, hits a HR as the Yankees rout the Mariners at the Kingdome by the score of 12-2. Five days later in his NFL debut with the Atlanta Falcons, the Yankee rookie returns a punt 68 yards for a touchdown.

1999 - Yankees starter Ed Yarnell goes 6 innings against the Angels to pick up his only Yankee career victory, winning the game by the score of 8-3. Derek Jeter and DH Darryl Strawberry lead the Yankees hitting attack with solo HRs.

2000 - At Kansas City, Yankees beat the Royals by the score of 10-5, behind Doc Gooden’s 5-inning relief stunt of Yankees starter David Cone. The Yankees hitting attack is lead by HR’s from Clay Bellinger, David Justice and Scott Brosuis. The Royal’s starter Jeff Suppan takes the loss.

2001 - At the Sky Dome, Yankees ace starter Roger Clemens picks up his 19th victory of the 2001 AL season, defeating the Blue Jays by the score of 4-3. Yankees closer Mo Rivera picks up his 44th save of 2001 AL season. Yankees OF David Justice hits a 2-run HR to pace the Yankees hitting attack.

2002 - At Yankee Stadium, Yankees starter David Wells picks up his 16th victory of the 2002 AL season, pitching a complete game, defeating the Tigers by the score of 8-2. Yankees 1B Jason Giambi goes 3 for 4 with a HR, 2 RBI’s to lead the Bronx Bombers hitting attack.

2004 - The Yankees defeat the Devil Rays, by the score of 7-4 behind starter Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, who gives up 2 hits, 2 runs with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings. Yankees reliever Paul Quantrill finishes up the game, picking up his 1st save of the 2004 AL season.

2008 - Brandon Morrow does not allow a hit until 2 outs in the 8th inning in his MLB debut. Wilson Betemit spoils the no-hit bid as Morrow tops the Yankees by the score of 3-1.
