Yanks 2010 Outfield Plans

According to John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus the Yankees hope to sign Johnny Damon to a one-year deal, as well as pursue Matt Holliday and Jason Bay. They would also like to give Austin Jackson a second year to develop at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

From everything I've read Cashman had seemed to make it clear that they would not be in the market for a big-name free agent, apparently that was another one of Cashman's little white lies.

What are your thoughts on this, and which of the two big name FA's would you rather sign? I think I'm leaning toward Holliday, especially after seeing what he's done in St. Louis since the trade.

Holliday AND Bay..?? I highly doubt it...

bay sucks forget him. holliday is an NL-only caliber player. wait for carl crawford.

Holliday! This way we can show we don't need Jason Bay to win.

An awful lot of this crap is disinformation. The Yanks may be throwing it out there simply to make the sox overpay to resign Bay.

No not that they're going to sign both of them but look at both of them as options.

Anon, I'm with you on this one.

I say trade for Crawford.

McAllister + Romine should do the trick.

If not, Holliday easy. He's one of the best defensive left fielders in baseball. While Bay, is dead last in UZR. Well behind Damon.

Damon, Gardner, Melky and Swisher. Throw in Hairston....where is there room for more OF's?

I agree with Anon and Greg, go after Crawford and I have a distinct feeling they will. Not that I would be overly upset if they landed Holliday but Crawford offers so much more. We could bat Crawford second behind Jeter and then move Damon down to a spot that will take advantage of his power and a spot that renders itself better to his declining speed. If they could pull this off, I might even be willing to revisit the Kemp for Cano talks from the past two years. Kemp, Crawford, and Swisher in the outfield. Damon as the DH and part time OF.

They'll end up with either Bay or Holliday, if not both. All I know is, the Teixeira signing may have been the best pickup in team history. Much to the dismay of Peter Gammons and the baseball tonight crew hahaha

NEITHER. we dont need them. re-sign Damon for a year or two, use him as mainly a DH. Have an outfield with Melky, Gardner, and Austin Jackson. We also have Nick Swisher as a reliable 4th outfielder and if Jackson doesnt play well then Swisher can be inserted into the starting linup and Jackson can get more work in triple A. I think they have a really good thing going with these young outfielders. No need to try free agency.

I agree Mike, which is why I think Crawford in 2011 is the answer. And seeing what they did with Kazmir this year, if they're out of it by the deadline next year he'll hit the market too.

Bay is overrated and Holliday belongs in the nl. I doub the yankees are giving another 100 milllion contract out this year.

I rather have Melky in right and Gardner in center than overpay for Holliday or Bay. I dont see why Brett Gardner can not turn into a Scott Posadenik type player. You add more speed and better defensive outfield with both Melky and Gardner.

SS- Jeter
DH- Damon
1B- Teixeira
3B- Rodriguez
C- Posada
2B- Cano
LF- Swisher
RF- Cabrera
CF- Gardner

That is still the best lineup in the al.

Also you can use Hairston and sit Gardner against overpowering hard throwing leftys like Jon Lester or the scott kazmir types. Gardner is fine against finese type leftys like Cliff Lee.

I say neither. Yes matt holliday is doing great NOW but does anyone remember what he did with the A's? Neither do I except for how terrible he was. Hes shown he can hit in the NL but in the AL forget about it and then you expect for him to hit in the AL East? Jason Bay he can hit the long ball but for average not so much hes a decent OF but I think the Yankees should look elsewhere.

No big free agents this year please. The wins mean less and less each time you just sign the best free agents year after year. I want young and cheap players for once.

Not so sure it was a white lie on Cashman's part. In context, its clear Cash was saying they won't be going for any more Tex-type contracts, but with the way contracts shook out at the end of last season, who knows what Bay and Holliday will go for. If the Yanks stay out of the hunt, you can be sure they'll go for relative bargain prices. At the very least, by showing an interest they will force their opponents to pay a premium (or something closer to it) for their services. Now, if we do end up with Holliday for 5 years at $12-15m, then I'll join in calling Cash a liar.

Capone -

Best pickup in team history? Really? Over Reggie? Cone? Winfield? Catfish? Babe Ruth?

We really need to start divorcing positions from the lineup. Instead of saying we're not getting enough production from the OF, we need to recognize that we are getting above average production in every spot in the lineup. We don't need an upgrade, at least not at the cost a Bay/Holliday would demand.
