It was a nice pitcher's duel at Safeco last night as the Yankees were able to come from behind to win 4-2. Mark Teixeira picked up the big hit, a game-winning solo homer to leadoff the ninth inning. Tex now has 30 homers and continues to get big hit after big hit. They have now won 11 of their last 12, and are a MLB-best 73-43, a whopping thirty games over .500. It was also their 38th comeback win, which is also the best in baseball.
Andy Pettitte started for the Yanks and got into some trouble early. Ichiro Suzuki led off Mariners half of the first with a single. That was followed by another single off the bat of center fielder Franklin Gutierrez. Jose Lopez then stepped up and lined an RBI double to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Ken Griffey Jr. then drove in the Mariners second run with an RBI ground out. That would be it for the Mariners offense tonight. Pettitte struck out Russell Branyan and Jack Hannahan to get out of the jam, and then pretty much cruised over the next five innings.
He got into a little trouble in the third, when he allowed a single to Ichiro and a walk to Gutierrez to start the inning, but then got Lopez to fly out to center, Griffey to pop out to third, which led to a hilarious exchange between Jerry Hairston Jr. and Derek Jeter - Jeter ran all the way to third base to catch the popup as if Hairston wasn't even there. Hairston was a little offended. Pettitte then got Brayan to fly out to right to end the inning.
The first two Yankees runs were both gifts, but sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. With runners on first and third and one out in the second Hairston hit a tailor made 5-4-3 double play ball, but Lopez couldn't make a clean turn and Hairston beat out the throw allowing a run to score. Later in the 5th Melky Cabrera reached on a two-out infield single. He then moved to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on Jeter's seeing eye single.
After Brian Bruney and Phil Hughes pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Brian Bruney looked sharp in the seventh. Hughes, on the other hand, had some command issues and walked two, but was able to get a big strikeout of Hannahan to leave the two runners stranded.
Then it was time for the MVP to step up and give the Yanks the lead. Robinson Cano would later extend his hitting streak to 12 games with a bloop double, and then Nick Swisher taced on the Yanks fourth run with an RBI single.
Mariano Rivera made his first appearance since telling Joe Girardi that his shoulder was bothering him. He didn't look too hurt to me. His velocity might have been a little low, but he need just nine pitches to pick up his 34th save of the season.
Game three of this four-game series is set for tomorrow night at 10:10 p.m. Sergio Mitre takes the mound for the Yankees, with left-hander Luke French starting for Seattle.

Great game last night. I had a long day and had to be at work early this morning so I really had no intention of staying up for the whole game.
But it's just too hard not to watch this team. Plus I was still pissed at the Rangers for blowing a 4-2 lead in the 9th and losing 8-4 to boston.
So I stayed up till the end and as soon as the game ended, I crashed. I'm paying for it this morning though because I had to be at work at 5 am.
But it was worth it to see them come back from 2 down and then watch Tex crush that ball. I knew the game was over then.
Bruney looked good and Hughes had you worrying. But he ultimately got the job done.
It was nice to see Cano extend his hitting streak to 12 games. That bloop double went down the third base line and kicked hard towards the stands. Once again, an idiot Mariners fan (this one in an M's shirt) grabbed at the the ball. That never ceases to amaze me how dumb some fans are.
It didn't really didn't matter though because Cano was going to get to second anyway.
Swish drove him home with a liner up the middle and the 4-2 lead.
30 games over .500!!!
6 1/2 game lead.
Life is good!
From the Post:
"Girardi will start A.J. Burnett, CC Sabathia and Gaudin in the three-game series in Oakland on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. After Thursday's day off, the Yankees will go with Andy Pettitte, Burnett and Sabathia in Boston next weekend."
As previously stated, the Yanks rotation is set up well for the red sox series next weekend.
The pitching matchups should be:
Pettittie vs Penny
Burnett vs Tazawa
Sabathia vs Beckett
Now lets hope that the Rangers and Toronto beat the sox up this week while the Yanks feast on Seattle and the A's.
the fan was actually doing them a favor - if they bobbled the ball cano might've made it to third. also how can you say mariano looked good? he got behind in the count with every single batter. his command wasn't there at all. and his velocity was down (as you mentioned).
tex is the man.
Great Game, Go Yanks!!!!
Hey Greg can you update us on whats going on with the Yanks Draft picks this year?
Is there a way that I can comment from my mobile phone?
Mariano command was off he also historically struggles in August. If he is sore I would rest him until the boston series. Just have Hughes close and Bruney in the 8th.
The yanks have some breathing room if they need to rest Mariano for a couple of days.
