9/12 Minor League Report - Playoff Edition

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost to Gwinnett 8-5 in game 3 of their five-game series (SWB leads series 2-1): Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yanks pounded the Gwinnett Braves 12-3 to win the 1st round of the playoffs 3 games to 1. The Yankees move on to defend their 2008 Governor's Cup Championship against the winner of the Louisville (Reds) vs Durham (Tampa) series starting Tuesday. That series is tied at 2 games each with the final game Sunday.

PITCHING: Zach McAllister (7-5, 2.23) made his AAA debut for the Yanks. McAllister threw a scoreless 1st inning, hitting the 2nd batter he faced with a pitch, but forcing a doubleplay. In the 2nd, McAllister gave up 2 singles (1 infield), but got out of the jam. Gwinnett got a leadoff single in the 3rd, but Chris Stewart threw out the runner trying to steal by 5 feet.
McAllister kept the scoreless streak going in the 4th, allowing a single.

In the 5th inning, McAllister got 2 quick outs. He then hit a batter and gave up 3 singles to give Gwinnett 2 runs that cut the SWB lead to 7-2. McAllister started the 6th, but was relieved after giving up a1-out walk and single. He picked up his 1st AAA win. McAllister's Line: 5.1 IP, 3 runs, 8 hits, 3 K--1 walk, 85 pitches---55 strikes, 7 groundouts---5 flyouts.

Anthony Claggett came on in relief in the 6th with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd. Colin Curtis made a terrific running catch in deep rightfield to save a couple runs. An rbi double cut the SWB lead to 7-3. Claggett threw perfect 7th and 8th innings.

Jose Valez came on to pitch a scoreless 9th, issuing a walk and picking up a strikeout.

OFFENSE: Jonny Venters LHP ( 4-7, 5.62) got the start for Gwinnett and took the loss. In the 1st inning, Freddy Guzman singled, but was erased when Austin Jackson hit into a doubleplay. The Yanks wasted a leadoff double by Juan Miranda in the 2nd. In the 3rd inning, Doug Bernier had a leadoff double, Kevin Russo singled, and Guzman and Jackson followed with RBI singles to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead. In the 4th SWB scored 5 runs to take a 7-0 lead. Reegie Corona had a leadoff single, Bernier walked, and Stewart had a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.

That knocked Venters of of the game, with Jon Huber replacing him. Huber hit Russo with his 1st pitch to force in the 3rd SWB run. Guzman picked up a RBI on a groundout. Jackson walked to reload the bases. Juan Miranda followed with a 2-run single. Eduardo Nunez added an infield RBI single to score the 5th run of the inning. SWB loaded the bases in the 5th on a hit batter and 2 walks but could not score. In the 6th, they once again loaded the bases on another hit batter and 2 walks. Stewart followed with a 2-run single to up the Yanks lead to 9-3. The SWB onslaught continued in the 8th. Colin Curtis singled, Corona doubled with Bernier walking to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Curtis with the 10th run. Russo followed with a 2-run double to up the SWB lead to 12-3.

NOTES: There was an hour and 9 min. rain delay before the start of the game. Ian Kennedy pitched 2 scoreless innings in the Tampa Yankees playoff game in his 1st appearance since his surgery. He'll be pitching at the Arizona Fall League.
