9/17 Minor League Report - Playoff Edition

That's the season folks. It was a very good year for the Yankees minor-league system. Tampa and Staten Island won their league championships. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre just fell short of repeating as International League champs, but still had a good year. Remember to check back for my Arizona Fall League and Winter League reports starting next month.

We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight.
He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I will
post them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost to Durham 3-2 in 12 innings in game 3 of the Governor's Cup finals (Durham wins 3-0): Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yankees had their season come to an end with a 3-2 loss to the Durham Bulls (Rays), in 12 innings. They were swept in the Governor's Cup Championship series 3-0.

PITCHING: Ivan Nova got the start for the Yankees. He pitched very well in his last start in the 1st round of playoffs picking up a win against the Gwinnett Braves and was even better in this game. Nova was perfect in the 1st inning, picking up 1 strikeout. Another perfect inning in the 2nd, with 2 more K's. Nova tossed a scoreless 3rd inning after allowing his first base runner on a walk. He also had a wild pitch. Nova continued to dominate with another perfect inning in the 4th. Durham got a leadoff single in the 5th for their first hit of the game, but Nova got the next 3 hitters in order. Nova threw another clean inning in the 6th, adding 2 more strikeouts with his fastball topping out at 95 mph. Once again a perfect inning in the 7th with Nova making it look easy out on the mound. Nova started the 8th inning giving up a leadoff and a bloop single before being relieved. He left with a 2-0 lead and a standing ovation. Outstanding finish to the season for Nova with two huge games in the playoffs after stuggling the 2nd half of the season.
Nova's line: 7.0 IP, 2 runs, 2 hits, 5 K's---2 walks.

Zach Kroenke relieved Nova in the 8th with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out. He retired the first 2 men he faced. Durham pulled off a huge double-steal to put runners at 2nd and 3rd and got a key 2-run single tie the game at 2 (both runs charged to Nova). Kroenke pitched a scoreless 9th giving up a 1 out single but getting a doubleplay to end the inning.

Kevin Whelan came on to pitch a perfect 10th picking up 2 strikeouts. He loaded the bases on 3 walks in the 11th before being relieved with 2 outs.

Eric Wordekemper came on in the 11th with the bases loaded and 2 out and got out of the jam forcing a groundout to 3rd. He gave up a run in the 12th on a single an RBI double to give Durham a 3-2 edge.

OFFENSE: Jason Cromer got the start for Durham. SWB took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Juan Miranda had a leadoff triple and Cody Ransom (just off the DL for this game) drove him in with an RBI sac fly. In the 3rd, Austin Jackson had a 2-out walk and stolen base. Miranda followed with a walk and Ransom picked up his 2nd RBI with a single to up the SWB lead to 2-0. Jackson got a 2-out single in the 5th but was stranded. SWB mounted another 2-out threat in the 6th when Reegie Corona singled and Doug Bernier walked, but were stranded. In the 8th, after getting 2 quick outs Durham reliever Joe Nelson walked Corona, Bernier, and Chris Stewart to load the bases. Heath Rollins replaced Nelson and got Kevin Russo to flyout to deep right to end the threat. Jackson picked up his 2nd hit of the night in the 9th on a 1-out single. Jackson moved up to 2nd on a Miranda groundout to 2nd. A wild pitch moved Jackson up to 3rd with Ransom at the plate, but Ransom fanned to force extra innings. In the 11th, Stewart led off with a double, but Calvin Medlock struck out Russo, Colin Curtis, and Jackson to end the threat. Miranda had a leadoff walk in the 12th. John Rodriguez followed with a 1 out walk. Justin Ruggiano made a great catch in left, but threw the ball away trying to double off Rodriguez at 1st, as runners moved up to 2nd and 3rd, but once again they were stranded as that ended the game and season for SWB. The Yanks had 11 walks and 1 hit batter in this game and only 1 scored.

NOTES: Austin Jackson was honored before the game with the Rookie of the Year Award. I wonder if he'll be added to the MLB roster soon.
