WP - Andy Pettitte (13-6)
LP - Brett Cecil (6-4)
SV - Phil Hughes (3)

Andy Pettitte, fresh off his near confrontation with baseball immortality on Tuesday, was okay in today's outing. But it was the bullpen that shined rather than Andy, and the offense did their thing which led to a 6-4 win.

In the top of the 2nd with runners at the corners, Melky Cabrera lined an RBI single up the middle, to give the Yanks an early 1-0 lead. Robinson Cano would extend the lead a bit more in the 4th when he led off with a no-doubt solo shot to right. It was his 23rd of the year, which is a new career-high. After the Blue Jays tied it up 2-2, Mark Teixeira quickly gave the Yankees the lead right back when he drilled a solo homer to left leading off the 5th, his 33rd of the year. In the 6th, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada would drive in a run each with RBI singles. And in the 9th Melky would end the Yankees scoring the same way it started - plating Robinson Cano by an RBI single.

Andy Pettitte wasn't as good as his near perfect game last week, but he did pitch a good enough game to get his 13th win of the year. He allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walking 5 and striking out 3 in 6 innings of work. Then the bullpen would finish the game as David Robertson, Brian Bruney, and Phil Hughes all combined to throw 3 hittless innings, with Hughes finishing the game in place of Mariano Rivera with a 4-out save, his 3rd of his career.

Good to see the Yanks come right back out after a loss and win a nice game today. The bullpen, as I said, was great, the offense pounded out 6 runs on 14 hits, and the entire team just continues to play good baseball.

On a side note, Derek Jeter picked up 2 hits to move to within 6 hits of Lou Gehrig's all-time record for hits by a Yankee. Unless Jeter has a monster game tomorrow, it does appear he will break that record some time during the double-header against the Rays on Monday, which, being in the new Yankee Stadium, feels fitting.

The Yanks improve to 87-49 with the win, which is still good for 1st place in homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. The Angels are 6 games behind the Yanks for that title. So, the Yankees will look to end their road-trip on a high-note when they finish up the 4-game series vs the Blue Jays tomorrow afternoon. Sergio Mitre will make the start against Brian Tallet. Game time 1:07 pm and only on YES. So another win, another day off the schedule. 25 games remaining till the postseason, and with Boston's loss in Chicago the magic number is now at 19 games. Go Yanks!

Yankees got some great power arms. In the 7th Robertson was hitting 95in the 8th Bruney was hitting 97 and in the 9th Hughes was hitting 96. Toronto really couldn't catch up. All they could do was draw 2 walks.

Even Wells was just hoping he could draw a walk. Robertson threw one right down the middle and froze him like Ted Williams.

I thought Kay for once made a nice point about the bullpen in the postgame. He said everyone in the main bullpen (Robertson,Bruney,Aceves,Coke,Marte and Hughes) have all gotten important outs. That is a sign of a very good bullpen. That you have a lot of different options towards the end of the game.

The Yanks bullpen has potentially four closers, Mo, Hughes, Robertson and Bruney, throw in Melancon and it's going to be the difference maker in the playoffs -- if these guys can pitch under playoff pressure.

Cano's single-season high in homers was 19. I'm not sure where you got 22 from, just thought I'd let you know man in case you wanted to fix that.

Great game today though guys, I hope Mitre pitches good again tomorrow.
