WP - CC Sabathia (17-7)
LP - Jeremey Guthrie (10-14)

The Yankees came into today's game on a 2-game skid against the Orioles, and were trying to avoid getting swept by Baltimore for the first time since 1986. And thanks to a good performance by CC Sabathia and a late-offensive surge, the Yanks came away with the win 13-3.

In the bottom of the first the Yanks got out to an early lead when Alex Rodriguez doubled off the wall to score Mark Teixeira. That lead would quickly slip away though as CC Sabathia allowed 2 runs in the second. CC then allowed another run in the fourth to put the Orioles up 3-1, but then the Yankees came back with 2 runs in the fourth on a two-run single by Melky Cabrera.

CC would then settle down, and that let the Yankees offense slip right pass the Orioles. In the sixth with the game tied, Hideki Matsui lined a two-run single of his own, to put the Yankees on top 5-3.

Then the Yanks would put the game way out of reach in the eighth scoring 8 runs, the first 3 being scored by a big three-run home run from Hideki Matsui, his 25th of the year and his 79th, 80th, and 81st RBIs. He's quietly having a solid year. Then after a two-run double from Melky Cabrera, a ground-rule double by Brett Gardner, and another two-run double by Mark Teixeira, the inning was finally over and the score was 13-3, which would eventually be the final score.

CC Sabathia tossed a nice ballgame, going 7 strong allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, but he walked 4 and stuck out only 1. Still a nice ballgame though by CC. Phil Hughes would then toss a scoreless eighth, and Brian Bruney and Edwar Ramirez would finish off the game in the ninth.

On a side note, things got tense in the fourth and fifth innings. With the bases loaded in the fourth, A-Rod struck out looking on a 2-2 pitch. And although replays showed it was outside, umpire Marty Foster called it a strike. So then after Orioles were retired 1-2-3 in the fifth, A-Rod went back into the clubhouse to look at replays of that 2-2 pitch. Then when the bottom half began, A-Rod was ejected for barking at the umpire about the pitch. Joe Girardi then came out and went nuts at Foster, due to his strike zone and ejecting the Yanks' biggest star. Both got tossed from the game, but no suspensions or fines were made.

So the Yankees were able to end their little 2-game skid today as they beat the Orioles 13-3. We still lost the series, but really these losses don't mean too much since we are practically in the playoffs already. Today's win trims our magic number to lucky 13, and our record improves to 92-52, the best in the Bigs by 7 games now. All in all, a good day for the Bombers as they avoid getting embarrassed by the O's. Tomorrow night the Yanks will play a makeup game against the Angels that was postponed back on May 3rd. Jered Weaver will appose Joba Chamberlain. Game time 7:05 and only on YES. Go Yanks!

I know it seems like just about everyone considers that the Yanks letting Matsui go at the end of the year is a foregone conclusion but this guy is a rock sold major league hitter and I'd hate to see one of our rivals get him.

With Damon likely coming back and Posada getting DH at bats too next year, there doesn't seem like there is much room for him but I sure wouldn't mind seeing him on the Yanks still.

Same here CF.

Again, sorry the game summary doesn't have the box score and stuff, Greg was at the Giants game so he asked me to fill in, and I don't know how to add the box scores and totals and all that.

Guess this will have to do. Sorry.

Hey YB, added the box score for you. Nice job, and nice wins today for the G-Men and Yanks.

See what happens when you play the regular lineup, Joe?

CF, Matsui has always been a professional hitter. He's going to be a very tough bat to replace if they do decide to let him go.

We should also remember that when this team was winning championships every year they had guys like Strawberry, Tim Raines, and Chili Davis coming off the bench. It wouldn't be the worst idea to have Matsui on the team in a similar role next year.

If Matsui could play the outfield, it would be a no-brainer to keep him. But he's a full-time DH, and sometimes he's not even that with his knees being what they are (and now they seem to be a problem every year). Next season I think you want to keep Damon, plus you won't be catching Posada more than 110-120 games tops. In the OF, you have to find enough at-bats for Melky & Gardner and AJax will be knocking on the door pretty soon. (I suspect Cashman may be making a move for another outfielder too) The only way to make all that happen is to clear the DH role, otherwise Damon & Posada will be sitting out games in place of Melky/Gardner and Cervelli. Over the past few days we saw what happens to the Yankees lineup when you give Damon & Posada rest together, right? I really love Matsui, but losing him gives the Yankees roster a lot more flexibility. And he's not getting any younger either. Who says he will be healthy next season, or that he'll still be able to produce 25 HRs and 90 RBIs? He's great when he plays, but don't forget he's had serious injuries in 2 of the past 4 seasons and he'll be 36 in June. I'll hate to see him go, but I don't see any other option unless Cashman trades someone away.

Matsui is a great hitter but I dont think he will be back. Matsui can barely run the bases he will be a trainwreck in the outfield. His knees are shot. I see Damon coming back because he is more versatile. He still plays a decent outfield and has more speed.

As Much as I love HIT-deki I really don't see him back. The Yankees want to get healthier and younger and Matsui is a step backwards. We have to many DH-type hitters on this team, Matsui would be lost on the bench. Damon, Posada, Swisher, Jeter could all use reps as the DH to stay fresh, and that will allow us to slot guys like Pena, Cisco, Gardner and other young guys in and start testing them out.

If your worried about Matsui going to another ML team, don't be. Hanshin said they want Matsui back in Japan and Hanshin was Hideki's team as a kid, you know he wants to play for them, its like Jeets and the Yanks.
