WP: J. Moyer (1-0)
LP: P. Hughes (0-3)
SV: R. Madson (1)
In his first start since being named the team's fifth starter, Phil Hughes pitched well, but didn't have his best command. In just three-plus innings he allowed a run on two hits and struck out five, but also walked four and threw two wild pitches. He threw 71 pitches, far too many for just three-plus innings, but Hughes didn't seem too bothered by his outing:
The Yankees offense was shutout for the second straight day, something that would bother me during the regular season, but means little this time of year. Four hits was all they came up with against Jamie Moyer and the Philadelphia staff. Moyer was excellent, allowing just one hit and walk, while striking out six in 6.2 innings. Marcus Thames got one of those hits to raise his average above .100 on the spring. Nick Swsher, Robinson Cano, and Jon Weber picked up the other hits for the Yankees, which were all singles.
If you're starting to get bored with spring training, welcome to the club.
"I didn't really feel like I was wild," said Hughes..."It was just adjustments I needed to make. Overall, I felt pretty good." (source: Bryan Hoch)After Hughes, the rest of the Yankees staff pitched pretty well, with the only blemish being two unearned runs being charged to Royce Ring. Mariano Rivera, Damaso Marte and Amaury Sanit each threw a scoreless frame. Zach Segovia pitched in with two scoreless.
