Vazquez, Aceves Impress As Yanks Sweep Split Squad Games

The Yankees played two games today, one at home against the Phillies and another on the road against the Pirates, and won both. Since there were two games and I only saw a little of the game against the Phils, it's back to bullet points.

First for the Phillies game, which the Yankees won 7-5.

• Javier Vazquez made his first spring appearance for the Yanks, and things didn't start off well when he allowed a solo homer to Jimmy Rollins to start the game. But he settled down after that and pitched pretty well. In two innings he allowed just that one home run, and struck out 4, including the side in the second............. "The important thing is that I got my work in," said Vazquez. "I'm throwing all my pitches. I threw the ball good."

• Jonathan Albaladejo allowed three hits, but finally pitched a scoreless to lower his spring ERA to 47.25.

• Amaury Sanit picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings.

• Robinson Cano picked up two RBI along with another two hits--a single and a double--to raise his average top .778 this spring.

• Nick Swisher went 2-for-3, with two doubles, and 3 RBI.
• Kevin Russo also picked up two hits, including a double.

• Six of the seven Yankees runs came against former Yankee Jose Contreras, who allowed 6 ER on 6 hits and 3 walks in 1.2 innings pitched. Contreras also took the loss.

• David Robertson struggled today, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in two-thirds of an inning.

And now for the Yankees 6-0 win over the Pirates in Bradenton.

• Alfredo Aceves was great today, throwing 4 perfect innings against the Pirates and striking out 3 to pick up his first win of the spring.

• Zack McAllister and Ivan Nova both pitched two scoreless innings. Nova allowed a hit and a walk, while McAllister allowed just one walk.

• Derek Jeter went 1-for-2, with a walk and a run scored.

• Eduardo Nunez went 2-for-2, with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.

• Alex Rodriguez picked up a hit and 2 RBI.

• Curtis Granderson is still hitless as a Yankee.

Tomorrow's Game

The Yankees will meet the Pirates again tomorrow at George M. Steinbrenner Field. CC Sabathia will make his second start the spring. For Pittsburgh, right-hander Charlie Morton gets the start. Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES.
