4/13 Minor League Report

==== ============

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (3-3) beat Rochester (2-4) 4-3: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yankees defeated Rochester (Twins) 4-3 for a sweep of their 2 game series. The win evens the Yankees record at 3-3.

MONTERO WATCH: Montero was 1-4 in the game, but he had the key game winning hit, a 2-rbi single in the 8th. In his other at bats - a 1st inning groundout to 3rd, 4th inning strikeout-looking, and a groundout to shortstop in the 6th. Montero has yet to have a multi-hit game, but he has 1 hit in all 6 games (2 doubles). He’s batting .250 so far with 4 rbis.

PITCHING: Ivan Nova made his 2nd start of the season in this game. Nova threw 4 shutout innings opening night and kept it going in this game giving up only 1 run in 7 innings. He gave up leadoff singles the first 2 innings, but worked out of it with no problem. Nova threw a scoreless 3rd inning issuing his first walk of the season and picking up 2 strikeouts. He got Rochester in order in the 4th. Rochester broke thru for the 1st run of the year off Nova in the 5th on 2 singles and a rbi groundout to cut the SWB lead to 2-1. Another scoreless inning in the 6th, with an infield hit. Nova finished very strong striking out the side in the 7th. He left the game with a 2-1 lead but the bullpen wasted a very good effort. Nova’s line: 7.0 IP, 1 run, 5 hits (2 infield), 7 K’s---1 walk. 90 pitches--57 strikes, 7 groundouts--7 flyouts.

Kei Igawa made his 2nd relief appearance, coming on in the 8th. Igawa didn’t take any time in wasting a very good performance by Nova. He gave up a leadoff walk and 2-run homer to Trever Plouffe to give Rochester a 3-2 lead. Igawa went from being the goat with a blown save, to picking up a cheap win as the offense bailed him out in the bottom of the inning. Igawa’s line: 1.0 IP, 2 runs, 2 hits, 0 K’s--2 walks.

Jonathan Albaladejo came on to pitch a scoreless 9th. He had 2 strikeouts and gave up a single. Albaladejo picked up his 2nd save. Albaladejo’s line: 1.0 IP, 0 runs, 1 hit, 2 K’s---0 walks.

OFFENSE: Anthony Swarzak got the start for Rochester. The Yanks got to Swarzak for 2 runs in the 1st inning. Eduardo Nunez doubled, David Winfree and Jon Weber followed with rbi singles to give SWB a quick 2-0 lead. Swarzak settled down after the 1st allowing an infield hit to Reegie Corona in the 2nd, a walk to Juan Miranda in the 3rd, and a single to Greg Golson in the 4th. Chad Huffman had a leadoff single in the 7th, but was picked off 1st base by catcher Wilson Ramos. That pickoff cost SWB a run as Golson followed with a triple but was stranded. The Yankees were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th but fought back. Nunez walked, Miranda singled, and Jesus Montero had the big game winning hit, a 2-out, 2-rbi single to give the Yanks a 4-3 win.

NOTES: Zach McAllister makes his 2nd start Wednesday when 1st place Syracuse comes to PNC Field... Chad Huffman made his SWB debut in centerfield. The Yankees picked him up from the San Diego system. Huffman beat Shelly Duncan last year in the home run derby at the AAA All Star Game. The New York team will have 5 days off before SWB has its first this spring.
