The Yankees opened up the home part of the 2010 schedule in grand fashion. Raising a 2009 world series flag and receiving their beautiful world series championship rings. After a well prepared celebration of the 2009 season in which Gene Monahan received a standing ovation, and Hideki Matsui was welcomed back to outpouring love from the fans it was time to get back to business. Old reliable was on the mound for the opener and he did not disappoint going 6 strong shutout innings.

The game seemed somewhat of an afterthought but the Yankees got out to an early lead with a Nick Johnson solo blast. Derek Jeter made it 2-0 Yanks with a solo shot of his own in the third, his first of the season. Jeter came through one more time with an RBI single in the 4th, and then Alex Rodriguez made it 5-0 with a two-run single in the sixth.

The Yankees had plenty of opportunities to score runs, however Ervin Santana was able to escape trouble numerous times. The Yanks could easily have had 7 or 8 runs by the time Santana left the game. But they wore him down, got his pitch count high, and the Yankees went to work on the Angels middle relievers scoring two big insurance runs. The first coming on an RBI double by Jorge Posada, and the second on an RBI single by Curtis Granderson.

Andy Pettitte was great today, throwing six shutout innings. He allowed just five hits, walked three, and struck out six on his way to his first win of the season.

Dave Robertson came in with the game all but over. He was not sharp allowing 4 Earned Runs on a grand slam by Bobby Abreu. Mariano was forced to come in and get the final two outs, striking out Tori Hunter, and getting Hideki Matsui to pop up.

Things to know about Matsui's return:

- All the Yankees rushed to him when he was introduced. The fans greeted him with a standing ovation.

- His original ring was a knock off as a little joke from his old teammates. He received the real ring during team intro's from his former manager Joe Girardi.

- Hideki was 0-for-5 in his return to the Bronx.

- Andy Pettitte was gracious and stepped off the mound to let Matsui receive more applause and acknowledge the crowd one more time before his first at bat.

The Yankees continue their series with the Angels tomorrow at 1:05pm the game will be on YES
