News & Notes

- In 25 career starts against the Angels, Andy Pettitte is 12-8, with a 4.40 ERA. Last year was a struggle for Pettitte against the Angels as the southpaw went 0-2, with a 7.94 ERA.

- Jered Weaver is 3-1 with a 6.14 ERA in four career starts against the Yanks. Three of those starts were at the old stadium and he went 2-1, with a 5.62 ERA. Last year he made two starts against the Yanks and went 1-1, with a 9.00 ERA. The loss came at The Stadium when the Yanks knocked him around for six runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

- The Yankees finished April with a 12-10 record. It may not be the "good" start we all were hoping for, but it was still their best April since 2006.

- According to Peter Abraham, Brian Bruney played catch for the first time today since his injury, and said he felt fine.

- I will be at tonight's game. It will be my first venture into the new, recessed, upper deck. I'll take pictures and post them tomorrow. I'll have my phone on me all night so I will be able to read and post comments from the game. Enjoy the game.

Clemens Had 'Man Boobs' Too

Let me first say that no, I do not think this is newsworthy, but it is somewhat funny so I will post it anyway.

From the NY Daily News:

Alex Rodriguez wasn't the only player in the Yankee clubhouse who suffered from "man boobs," an embarrassing side effect of steroid use.

According to "American Icon," a book by the Daily News sports investigative team that will be released on May 12, Roger Clemens also sprouted breasts as a result of anabolic steroid use. The condition is called gynecomastia, and it occurs in men who use steroids because their bodies compensate for a surge of testosterone by increasing production of female hormones.

"The medical term was gynecomastia, but around the clubhouse they called them "b---- t---" or "man boobs" - and heaven help the player who sprouted them in the middle of his career and then took his shirt off in the locker room," the Daily News reporters wrote in "American Icon." "Roger Clemens had man boobs, and he must have been embarrassed because he was often the first Yankee out of the shower and the first to get dressed after the game

Kids, the moral of this story is don't do steroids. Because if you do you will get "bitch tits."

Former Teammates Weigh In On New A-Rod Allegations

Just so you know before you start reading, this SI story is mostly about tipping pitches and not steroids.

When it was reported last February that Alex Rodriguez had tested positive for steroids in 2003, the reaction around baseball was mostly one of shock. Thursday's revelation that Rodriguez might have been tipping pitches to opposing hitters while playing shortstop for the Rangers from 2001-03 elicited a similar reaction from his former Texas teammates, with one important distinction: this might be even worse.

"In a lot of ways, it's worse than steroids and HGH," said Twins pitcher R.A. Dickey. "It's so much worse because you're harming another person deliberately."

These latest allegations -- that A-Rod might have been purposely tipping pitches to opposing hitters while playing shortstop for the Rangers in the hopes that they would return the favor for him -- landed like a body blow to former teammates Doug Glanville and Dickey. When told of the news, Glanville, who played with the Rangers in 2003 and is now retired, said "Oh wow." Dickey's first reaction was "Oh gosh man."

Shane Spencer, though, was not surprised. Spencer came to the Rangers from the Indians in a July 2003 trade and it wasn't long after his arrival that he began hearing whispers in his new, divided clubhouse about Rodriguez. "It was brought up. I overheard it but not from specific people," said Spencer, now a coach with the high Class-A Lake Elsinore (Calif.) Storm. "I think I overheard it in our clubhouse, but that team was really split up -- a bunch of groups of threes and fours. It wasn't a real close clubhouse and guys start talking especially when you're getting your butt kicked everyday. I remember hearing that."

Both Glanville and Dickey were reluctant to believe the allegations, which are a part of Selena Roberts' forthcoming book "A-Rod," until further information is made available, but neither could be sure that it didn't happen either. "I certainly didn't know or see anything like that," said Glanville. "Obviously if that's true that would be insane. I don't remember hearing anything about that when I was there. Of course it would be egregious and unforgivable."

"From personal experience, I can tell you I've seen nothing or heard nothing that would support any chapter in that book that says that," said Dickey. "Then again, it's not so far outside the realm of possibility where you could dismiss it because obviously it could happen. It's mind-boggling."

Not to Spencer. The journeyman outfielder said that while he never saw or heard of other players doing that, he wouldn't have been surprised if Rodriguez wasn't the only one doing so. "I'm sure it does happen. There are friends of friends. I'm sure there are catchers out there that have told guys what's coming. Hopefully it didn't happen [in Texas] and hopefully it didn't happen that often."

The allegations, which were first made public in a New York Daily News story on Thursday, are in Roberts' book, which will be released on Monday. In a phone interview with SI.com, Roberts said that over the course of a couple years, some people with the Rangers began to detect a pattern whereby Rodriguez would appear to be giving away pitch type and location to hitters, always middle infielders who would then be able to repay him in kind when he was at the plate, with his body movement. According to Roberts' sources, "If it was a changeup, he would twist his glove hand. To indicate a slider, he would sweep the dirt in front of him and he would bend in the direction of where the pitch was going to be, inside or outside." Roberts' sources stressed that this only occurred in games that had long since been decided and was done for "slump insurance. You can count on your buddy to help break you out of your slump. There was no intent to throw a game or change the outcome."

That explanation wasn't sufficient for Glanville or Dickey, who said "There's no situation that would ever justify him doing that on any level. That's somebody's ERA that's somebody's livelihood, that's somebody trying to provide for their family. I'm holding on to the belief that it's not true. No one with a conscience could do that. Blows me away."

I know as a fan, this bothers me a lot. But to me it's more interesting to hear how players feel about this kind of stuff, because they're the people who are effected by it. Can you imagine if you're a pitcher trying to make it in the big leagues, and Alex Rodriguez, the guy with the highest salary in the game, is giving the other team your pitches and probably helping you get a ticket back to Triple-A?

Late Rally Leads Yanks to 7-4 Win

It was a nice win for the Yankees in the the Bronx last night as they beat the Angels 7-4. A.J. Burnett started for the Yankees and did not have a great outing. He lasted seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out five. He threw 108 pitches, 67 for strikes. It was Burnett's third straight sub-par outing after starting the year on fire.

He was rocky from the start, allowing a lead off triple to Chone Figgins. Figgins later scored on a Bobby Abreu RBI single. (Surprisingly, Abreu did not get that loud of an ovation, but he did get a roll call from The Creatures.) The Angels added two more in the top of the second on a solo homer off the bat of Mike Napoli and a sac fly by Eric Aybar. The fourth Angels' run came in the top of the fifth. Aybar led off with a double (thanks to Damon's arm) and then Figgins drove him in with a RBI single.

The one thing Burnett did do was last seven innings and give the bullpen a bit of a break. With Burnett's seven innings, each of the five Yankees' starters went at least six innings over the last five games, and if the Yankees can continue to get that sort of length out of their starters they will win a lot of games.

Trailing 1-0, the Yankees came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the first. With nobody on and two out Mark Teixeira hit a double deep in the left-center field gap. Hideki Matsui then stepped to the dish and line an RBI single up the middle.

After Burnett gave the lead back to the Angels with two runs in the top of the second, Johnny Damon hit a solo homer, his fourth, to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth the Yankees had runners on first and third with one out, and Derek Jeter was batting. He lined a 1-1 pitch into right for what appeared to be an ordinary RBI single, but Abreu allowed the ball to get past him and Ramiro Pena was able to score all the way from first, and the Yankees led 4-3. Abreu was then serenaded with "Bobby" chants from the bleachers.

With the score now tied in the bottom of the 8th the Yanks put a three spot on the board to put the game away. With one out Robinson Cano singled, Jorge Posada then hit a ground-rule double and the Yanks were set up with 2nd and 3rd. The Angels then intentionally walked Nick Swisher to load the bases for Melky Cabrera. Melky lined the first pitch he saw for an RBI single into right. Pena then stepped up and lined a two-run double into the right field corner. I was always in favor of Brett Gardner starting, and I still think he deserves more of a chance, but for now they have to keep playing Melky.

Phil Coke pitched a scoreless 8th inning to pick up the win, his first of the year. I know I mentioned this the other day, but he's really been a lot better since his early season struggles.

Mariano Rivera came on for the ninth. He allowed a hit and struck out two to pick up his fifth save of the season.

I was at the game, sitting in section 235 of the LF bleachers. It was a decent crowd considering it was a cold, mid-week game. The seats behind homeplate appeared to be a little less empty than it had been during the first homestand. Maybe it was because of the Angels, or maybe it was because of the price cut, who knows. (AAA) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (16-3) beat Norfolk 12-6: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yankees defeated the Norfolk Tide (Orioles) by a score of 12-6. Shelley Duncan paced the Yanks with a 2-run homer and a solo homer. They finish April at 17-3, a franchise record.

PITCHING: Kei Igawa got the start for the Yanks. Igawa threw a perfect 1st inning. He gave up 1 run in the 2nd on a solo homer to cut the SWB lead to 2-1. That home run was the 9th Igawa has issued this year and leads the league in that category. He threw scoreless 3rd and 4th innings. He gave up a run in the 5th on a double and single to cut the Yankee lead to 4-2. Igawa gave up 2 runs in the 6th to tie the score on 2 doubles.

Igawa's line: 5.1 IP, 4 runs, 7 hits, 3 strikeouts--0 walks. 78 pitches - 55 strikes, 4 groundouts - 7 flyouts.

BULLPEN: Jose Valdez relieved Igawa in the 6th with 1 out and a runner on 2nd. A RBI double tied the score at 4. Run charged to Igawa. Valdez started the 7th with a 7-4 lead and immediately gave up 2 runs on a single and 2-run homer without recording an out. Valdez got the win.

Anthony Claggett came in for Valdez and got the side in order to finish the 7th. SWB's lead cut to 7-6. Claggett threw a scoreless 8th after giving up 2 singles to start the inning.

Brett Tomko pitched a scoreless 9th allowing a single.

OFFENSE: The Yanks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning on a walk to Luis Nunez, and Shelley Duncan's 2-run homer (8). SWB added a run in the 3rd on a double by Todd Linden, Juan Miranda single and throwing error giving them a 3-1 lead. P.J. Pilittere gave the Yanks a 4-1 lead in the 4th with his first AAA homer. With the score tied at 4 in the 6th. SWB picked up 3 runs to make it 7-4. Juan Miranda walked, Austin Jackson singled. The runs scored on a wild pitch and rbi singles by Chris Malec and Pilittere. SWB exploded for 5 runs in the 7th. S. Duncan hit his 2nd homer of the game, a solo shot (9). Miranda and Jackson walked. E. Duncan and Malec had RBI singles. 2 runs scored on Nunez's RBI groundout and an error to up the SWB lead to 12-6.
