10/18 Winter Ball Report

In the AFL the Peoria Javelinas beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 14-11: Box Score - Recap

It was not a good day for Phil Hughes. He started and got hammered by the Scorpions. He lasted just 2.2 innings, and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out one. He threw 60 pitches, only 36 of them for strikes.

Humberto Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning in relief, allowing just one hit and a walk.

Austin Jackson went 1-for-5, and scored a run.

Juan Miranda went 2-for-4, with a HR, three RBI and two runs scored. He was also hit by a pitch.

Kevin Russo had a huge day. He went 5-for-5 with a RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Austin Romine went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE:

Phil Hughes made 2 starts this week. Monday (10-13) Hughes pitched very well going 5 innings allowing only 1 run on 4 hits. The run came on a solo homer. He picked up 3 K's--1 walk. Hughes had a bad game Saturday. He pitched scoreless 1st and 2nd innings. In the 3rd he gave up 8 runs, 7 earned, on 6 hits including a big 3-run homer. He lasted only 2.2 innings. He had 1 K-1 walk. Hughes left down 8-1 but he did not figure in the decision as the offense bailed him out with a comback win. Overall in 3 games covering 12.2 IP, 8 earned runs, 12 hits, 11K's--8 walks. ERA 5.68,

Humberto Sanchez threw 1 scoreless inning on Wed. allowing 1 single with 1 strikeout. Saturday Sanchez threw a scoreless inning giving up a single and walk . Overall 3 games, 2.2 IP, 4 runs, 4 hits, I K-4 walks. BAA. .400.

Kevin Whelan threw 2 scoreless innings Wed allowing 1 single and walk, and picking up a strikeout. So far in 2 games. 2.2 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits, 4 K's--1 walk. BAA .154.

Jeffrey Marquez threw 1 perfect inning Monday picking up 2 K's. Friday he threw 2 more innings. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits, 1 a solo homer. He also had 2 K's---1 walk. In his 3 games so far, 5.0 IP, 2 runs, 3 hits, 6 K's--1 walk. BAA .176.

Austin Jackson went 5-18 for the week. He had his best game Wed. going 3-5 with a triple and double. Jackson has played in 9 games. 35 at bats, BA .229, 8 hits, 7 RBI, 9 K's--2 walks.

Juan Miranda continues his hot hitting. He's currently batting .500. For the week he went 8-20 featuring a 2-run homer that helped bail Hughes out Saturday. He also has 6 doubles and 2 triples, with 7 RBI in 7 games.

Kevin Russo's bat finally woke up featuring a 5-5 day Saturday to raise his average up to .308. Russo started to snap out of his slump Thursday with the game winning RBI single. He's hitting .308 in 7 games.

HAWAII WINTER LEAGUE:

Andrew Brackman still struggling with his command, made his 4th start on Tuesday. He went 4 innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits. The key blow was a 2-run homer. He picked up 4 K's--4 walks. Brackman took the loss (1-3)

Jeremy Bleich picked up his 1st win of the HWL Friday night going 6.2 innings allowing 1 unearned run on only 3 hits. He also had 5 K's--0 walks. Bleich has pitched very well his last 2 starts not allowing an earned run and lowering his ERA to 2.41.

Damon Sublett played in only 2 games this week with a 2-run triple. He's batting .289 overall in 10 games.

Austin Romine played in 3 games last week going 1-10 and is batting .269 in his 8 league games with 2 RBI and 2 doubles.

CARRIBEAN WINTER LEAGUES:

Justin Christian is playing for Mochis of the Mexican League. In 7 games he's batting .217 with 6 hits, 6 stolen bases, 1 RBI, 4 runs.

Oneli Perez is pitching for Licey in the Domincan League. In 2 games, 3.0 IP, 0 runs, 3 hits, 5 K's---1 walk.

Matt Carson playing for Aquilas in the Domincan League. In 2 games he's 1-9.

Francisco Cervelli playing for Lara in the Venezuela League. 0-3 in 2 games.
