The Yankees defeated the Reds 4-1 tonight behind a dominating performance by CC Sabathia. He held the Reds to just one run on four hits - all singles - and struck out seven in 7.2 innings pitched. The big lefty threw 93 pitches on the night, 68 of them for strikes. At one point he retired 16 straight batter. It appears that CC is just about ready for opening day.
Damaso Marte relieved Sabathia with two outs in the 8th and retired the only batter he faced.
Mariano Rivera came in for the save and pitched a pefect inning with a strikeout, and needed just five pitches to do so. In five innings this spring he's allowed no runs on just one hit and struck out seven. In those five innings he's thrown just 45 pitches, 35 of them for strikes.
In his second game in the leadoff spot Derek Jeter went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. The double came to start off the game, and he later scored on a Mark Teixeira single. Teixeira went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Xavier Nady was the only other Yankee with a hit, he went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Cody Ransom was held hitless, but had an RBI, stole a base, and scored a run.
