I was feeling pretty good about this game heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. In fact I was feeling great. The Yankees had just extended their lead to 6-0 when Robinson Cano, who had a huge day at the plate, hit a two-run double. And A.J. Burnett was continuing his dominance at Fenway park as he rolled through the first three innings. But then, out of nowhere, Burnett completely fell apart. He started missing his spots, walking people, and before you knew it, Jason Varitek was sending a grand slam over the wall in right to cut the Yankees lead to 6-5.
Then in the bottom of the fifth he allowed a lead off homer to Jacoby Ellsbury to tie the game. Later in the inning he allowed a two-out, two-run double to Jason Bay and the Sox had turned a 6-0 deficit into an 8-6 lead. Burnett got the last out in the inning but that would be it for him for the day. In five innings he allowed eight runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out three.
The Yankees didn't roll over and die. Derek Jeter led off the sixth with a walk and the Yankees had the tying run at the plate in Johnny Damon. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat he sent a 3-2 fastball deep to right for a two-run homer and the game was tied.
Boston regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the sixth on a sacfly by David Ortiz.
In the top of the seventh the Yankees regained the lead. Hideki Matsui led off with a single, Angel Berroa grounded out, Brett Gardner singled and then stole second, the Yanks had runners on second and third and one out. Jeter was up next but struck out and Manny Delcarmen was an out away from getting out of the jam. Damon then came up and hit a sharp grounder to the right of Dustin Pedroia, he got there but the ball went right between Pedroia's legs and two runs scored to give the Yanks a 10-9 lead. That would be the last time the Yanks would lead.
Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer off Jonathan Albaladejo in the bottom of the seventh and the Sox now led 12-10.
Robinson Cano hit a solo homer in the 8th to cut the Sox lead to 12-11, but the Sox would put the game away with a four-run rally in the bottom half, capped off by two-out, three-run double by Lowell. Boston has now won nine in a row.
This isn't an excuse, but the umpires were absolutely awful today. The home plate umpire blew a third-strike call to J.D. Drew in the bottom of the fourth. It should have been the second out, instead he was able to draw a walk. If the umpire makes the right call there who knows if Varitek even gets an at-bat that inning.
Then, in the bottom of the 8th, Jorge Posada clearly threw out Ellsbury by at least a foot, but the umpire calls him safe. Nobody on with one out is a lot different than a runner on second with nobody out. The Sox went on to score four and put the game away.
Now it's up to Andy Pettitte to get out of this series with at least one win. These first two games have been two of the worst losses I've seen in a while, and I can't imagine anyone on that team is feeling good about themselves right now. I think it's very important for them to end the series on a high note.
