Olney: Yanks Considering Mark DeRosa

It has been reported that the Cleveland Indians are looking to unload Mark DeRosa and his $5.5 million salary. They're looking for an MLB ready pitcher in return. Today, Buster Olney (hat-tip to MLB Trade Rumors) writes that the Yankees are at considering making a run a the versatile DeRosa:
Imagine Mark DeRosa as a big hunk of tuna, bait on a hook. One of the looming shadows circling below is that of the New York Yankees, who are weighing options and haven't decided whether to take a shot at the versatile veteran.
So far this year with The Tribe he's hitting .266/.333/.446 with 8 HR and 32 RBI, and has turned things on after a slow April. This month he's hitting .295/.352/.453 with 3 HR and 14 RBI. He is a very valuable player to have, he's good offensively, and he can pretty much play every position on the field besides catcher. If it doesn't cost too much they should go for it.

Do the Yankees have an "MLB-ready" starter who isn't currently on the big club?

I would not give them an MLB ready pitcher unless we can trick the Indians into thinking that Veras or Ramirez are MLB ready.

NY Sports Jerk said...

Crossfire - exactly.

If we had an MLB ready pitcher, he'd be on the roster pitching.

We all know teams ask for a lot more than they usually get for a player. Let's see how things work out. DeRosa makes this team so much deeper and better. He'll also give the Yankees the ability to keep everyone well rested.

Why would we do this? I love DeRosa don't get me wrong, but we already have a Glut of DH's and what happens when nady comes back. This just does not make sense unless we can give them Matsui who I hate.

If they could pull this move off without losing any integral pieces it would be great. DeRosa could easily spell most of the players a day off from the infield here and there and he can play RF can't he? If so it would be great to get Swisher out for a breather cause lately he isn't making much contact.

DeRosa would be fine as a backup or pinch-hitter, but you can't give up anything close to MLB-ready for that.

I'd be fine with having him replace Pena/Berroa on the roster, but not for anything of value.

This move wouldn't make much sense. The only MLB ready starter we have is Wang, and maybe Aceves. Neither of them are going anywhere, too valuable.

lets deal them igawa

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, how is DeRosa another DH? The guy plays every position on the field. He's actually like the anti-DH.

Unless he's hiding his ability to catch, we don't need him.

I think he'd be good to get!

He's a DH because their is no position open for him to play. Where are you putting him?

Greg Cohen said...

He won't start everyday but with the way Swisher is playing he could get into some games in right, then he could give days off to Jeter, Cano, and A-Rod. The guy is incredibly versatile. Guys like him are hard to come by and a very valuable.

He was arguably the Cubs MVP last year, get him ASAP.

i would really like this move...i wouldnt be bothered if the yanks gave up a brett tomko or alfredo aceves or alebanjdo...this guy is good. i def wouldnt mind derosa hitting can of corn homeruns in the bronx.

holycow10 said...

of course most importantly giving filling in anywhere on the field to give our big names a break.

Well since matsui is on the decline of his career and arod has no range at third right now it would be great to have his glove at 3rd and move arod to DH assuming posada will be ok catching almost everyday again...it defintly gives the yanks options...and rest for the everyday infielders is always a good thing

It wouldn't make much sense to get him unless Nady or Matsui were out for the year. There's no sense acquiring him if he's not going to get regular AB's. I'm sure Cleveland would ask for Hughes or Aceves. Igawa would require another good prospect to make a deal work.

Aceves seems like a logical fit. He is a nice innings eater and long man but Tomko can do that job as well and although I am not sure of when he is going to be ready, Sergio Mitre was probably the least known about and good move the Yankees have made in awhile.

Give them Kei Igawa! He's MLB ready. Maybe Cashman can pull one of those trades like last year when we got Nady and Marte for people at the bottom of our list.

He would have to be a starter, I don't see why not.

Greg Cohen said...

Why would he have to start? Do you mean you think he should start because he's too good to waste of the bench?

JoeNYy said...

deal them Tomko or Igawa. the indians pitching is so bad, so that would be fine. I like DeRosa, 87 ribbies last year, he'd be great off the bench.

DeRosa is going to cost some good prospects.

Derosa is versitile he can play the entire infield and the corners in the outfield.

But I think the lineup is fine they just had like 51 hits against Texas. The yankees need to add a reliable bullpen arm and get rid of Veras. That is the only weakness in the team.

Greg Cohen said...

No doubt they need a reliever, and if I had to chose between DeRosa and a reliever, let's say George Sherrill or Houston Street I'd go with the reliever.

Anonymous said...

I honestly think they dont need Derosa. Nady will be on the bench as a pinch hitter. I still dont know who Nady will pinch hit for because the lineup is strong. Once Melky comes back you can have a nice rotation of Gardner/Melky/Swisher. Just go with the two who are hot.

They need a big time bullpen arm.

Greg Cohen said...

Honestly, they don't "need" DeRosa, you're right, but he would make them a better, and much deeper team. Remember how deep those championship teams were? That's what I think the Yankees need to get back to.

Also, as the year goes on, guys like Damon, A-Rod, Swisher and Jeter will need days off. Having a quality guy like DeRosa to plug in for them is a luxury I would love the Yankees to have.

Yankeefan91 Arod Fan said...

I absolutely would love derosa with the yanks he might even take swisher job in riht field sicne swisher aint doin crap lately.

NY Sports Jerk said...

Obviously we'd love to have that luxury, Greg, but the Indians aren't just going to give DeRosa away to the Yankees for nothing.

Which prospects would you be willing to part with that the Indians would seriously consider taking in exchange for DeRosa?

Mark Shapiro isn't an idiot who is going to take our crap, and he knows that if the Yankees had any MLB ready arms they'd already be in the big leagues.

Anonymous said...

Shapiro would probably ask for Melancon or Robertson or maybe even Aceves. I wouldn't give any of them up for Derosa.

Greg Cohen said...

I wouldn't give up Melancon or Aceves, Robertson I'd consider. What will he be? At best a setup man?

Plus there are a lot of good starters in the city that the Yankees could afford to part with. Joe or RAB mentioned that Zach McAllister was an example of one of those starters. He said that he didn't think it was worth it, and neither do I, but if you package a few lesser prospects maybe a deal could be done.

Anyway, the "mlb ready pitcher" talk is just talk. Like I said before, let's just see how this plays out.
