News & Notes

- A.J. Burnett has made three career starts against his old team and is 2-1, with a 3.04 ERA. But in two starts against them this year he's 1-1, with a 4.30 ERA.

- In one start against the Yanks - on 7/6 in the Bronx - Ricky Romero is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA. In 6.1 innings he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5.

- The Yankees are 24-14 against left-handed starters this season. They lead baseball with a .297 average against lefties. Derek Jeter leads the majors with a .432 average vs. lefties.

- The Yanks have won 32 of their last 42, and are 5.5 games ahead of Boston in the AL East. And at 70-43 they have the best record in all of baseball.

- Since losing two out of three to the Nationals from June 16-18, the Yankees are 19-4 at home. Overall they're 40-18 in the Bronx which is the best home record in the game.

- Mariano Rivera has converted 33-of-34 save opportunities this season. He's converted 29 straight saves which is the longest such streak in the Majors.

- According to the YES Network Twitter account, "Joba Chamberlain will skip his next turn in rotation. Will start next Wednesday in Oakland."

- The Yankees have won seven of the ten games against the Jays this year.

- The Yankees had their second round of kangaroo court yesterday. Here's more from Chris Hine:
The Yankees held their second edition of kangaroo court before Tuesday’s game, with Mariano Rivera acting as judge. Rivera was dressed in a robe and a wig and used a gavel, all of which was presented to him by Marilyn Milian, the judge on “The People’s Court.” Rivera’s main role in the farcical court was to hand out fines for undisclosed offenses.

A. J. Burnett was the secretary, and Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter and Mike Harkey, the bullpen coach, were the jury. Although, Rivera said, the jury is not immune to getting fined. Neither is the judge, who was fined by “the grand jury,” Rivera said.

“It’s great,” Joe Girardi said. “Just because what you see during the course of an hour is a lot of laughter. Guys defending each other, guys needling each other. I just think it’s a good chance to come together as a team.”
Anthony DiComo has more on the story here.

UPDATE: 2:05 p.m.: Derek Jeter was hit by a Ricky Romero pitch on his right foot in the first, tried to play through it, but left the game in the top of the third. More info to come.

UPDATE: 2:22 p.m.: They just announced during the broadcast that Jeter has a contusion on his right foot and is headed for x-rays.

UPDATE: 3:00 p.m.: X-rays on Jeter’s foot came back negative and he's listed as day-to-day.

Stick around and discuss the game
as it happens in the comments section.

Matsui #3 hole, prime target of DP, with his bad knees..Cano has been hot lately, & warranted a chance to hit in the #3 hole.

Damon is having some year. 2-1 Yanks on another shot into Damon's Deck.

Greg Cohen said...

By the way, I agree. I wouldn't have minded seeing Cano hit third at all.

Any idea on how Jeter's foot is??

Greg Cohen said...

Just announced that he has a contusion and is headed for x-rays.

Hey guys, i was just in vermont for a couple of days and it was so fun to fuck around with those phony red sox fans during the sweep this weekend

I'm already sick of this fat shit Ruiz.

Greg Cohen said...

Damn it Posada, block something.

Scotty B said...

I've never seen as many wild pitches/passes balls in my life as I do when AJ pitches to Posada. It's like a gurarentee of atleast 2 a game.

Another run due to Posada's horrid defense. Nothing new here. He ruins are first inning with a terrible AB, makes it worse by not running hard out of the box and then BAM, his defense costs us again. What a horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE catcher.

Greg Cohen said...

Anon, do us all a favor a swallow a bottle of sleeping pills.

holycow10 said...

am i seeing things or did posada completly miss catchign a fastball inside. and caught blue square in the chest?!? what the hell is up with posada

Greg Cohen said...

Burnett threw a fastball by Jorge called a breaking ball. The only one I blame Posada for is the ball that went past him that scored the third run. Besides that, Burnett has been all over the place.

Greg Cohen said...

The momentum is completely in the Jays favor. The bullpen is going to have to come up big today. Again.

So far Coke didn't do his job. This doesn't look like the Yanks day.

- Not the other anon

This is a real tough spot for Robertson, he's made a bad habit out of letting inherited runners in. ... Ok, well there's an out.

Greg Cohen said...

That one is also mostly Posada's fault.

Mario said...

yanks determined to give this one away,

Greg Cohen said...

Good job by Robertson... Now they need some damn runs.

Mario said...

we lose this game, i'm blaming girardi, molina should have caught the game, & matsui should have never been in the #3 hole, & granted Hinske has done a above avg job of coming off the bench, why do we have 28 yr old shelley duncan in AAA for????

Greg Cohen said...

WAKE UP PENA!

Mario said...

that inning was just flat out FUGLY..

Greg Cohen said...

Enough of Robertson, bring in Hughes before Toronto has the lead.

They look as though they've run out of gas today. Can someone else step up and be the hero?

Mario said...

have to think about pinch hitting TEX in bottom of the 8th or 9th?

Mario said...

damnit, come on,

This is the ballgame right here.

I was at the game today and had a great time. It sure looked like one of those days where things just weren't going the Yanks way. But I was convinced that they would win. Of course I was also convinced that Tex would come into the game late as a pinch hitter and win the game for us.

Well that didn't happen but Cano got the job done.

Man I love going to the Stadium. My next game isn't until 8/27 when I bring my 2 year old to his first game!
